Court sends fake LASTMA officer to jail (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Mobile) Court, sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, Lagos, has sentenced one David Oluchukwu, to four-month jail term for impersonating as officer of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA and extorting money from unsuspecting motorists, particularly commercial bus drivers in the state.

Operatives of LASTMA had on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, nabbed Oluchkwu, 27 year-old around the Lekki area of Lagos while in the act.

The suspect was subsequently arraigned by LASTMA on a two-count charge of “Conduct likely to cause breach of peace and Impersonation” before the court where he was convicted.

According to the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, the Magistrate Adesanya Ademola sentenced Oluchkwu to a 4-month jail term without any option of fine after he pleaded ‘Guilty’ to the two- count charge levied against him. Read more

NDLEA intercepts 1.8m narcotic pills hidden in noodles (Vanguard)

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted at least, One Million, Seven Hundred Sixty Thousand Four Hundred Sixty (1,760,460) pills of Tramadol and other opioids hid in Indomie noodles packs and others at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja Lagos as well as in Gombe state.

Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi in a statement said, “Over 600,000 pills of Tramadol 225mg coming from Karachi, Pakistan in two separate shipments on Ethiopian Airlines flights were intercepted by operatives of NDLEA at the SAHCO import shed of the Lagos airport on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th December

“A total of 5,960 pills of Rohypnol concealed in 60 packs of Indomie noodles going to Johannesburg, South Africa were also seized at the SAHCO export shed of the airport on Wednesday 14th December.

“A female freight agent, Olaleye Adeola has already been arrested in connection with the noodles consignment. Read more

I buried my dad with Yahoo money, says 21-year-old (Punch)

A 21-year-old man, Ifeanyi Egbuwu, has been sentenced to one-year imprisonment for Internet fraud.

Egbuwu was arrested on August 2, 2022, by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission during a raid on some Internet fraudsters at 42, Ola Williams Street, Kay Farm Estate, Iju, Lagos State.

During the arrest, nothing was recovered from the suspect, who claimed to have recently graduated from Oregun Senior High School.

However, he granted the EFCC access to his email, omohhenry79@gmail, where fraudulent documents were recovered. Read more

My husband confessed to oral sex with my niece –Doctor’s wife (Punch)

Mrs Aderemi Olaleye, the wife of a medical doctor at the Optimal Cancer Care Foundation, Dr Olufemi Olaleye, who is standing trial for allegedly defiling a 15-year-old minor, has told the court how her husband allegedly sexually abused her niece during her stay with them.

The witness, who testified before an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, Ikeja, on Monday, said the defendant introduced the victim to pornography and oral sex from March 2020 till July 2021.

Olufemi is facing two counts of defilement and sexual assault by penetration of his wife’s niece, who started living with his family in December 2019, after her guardian died.

Aderemi, who had been married to the doctor for 11 years, said the victim confessed to a relative and their driver that her husband threatened to kill her if she revealed her ordeal to anyone. Read more

Tricycle operators attack LASTMA officials, 1 injured (Punch)

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has accused members of the Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria of attacking its officers with dangerous weapons while they were on official duties in the Ojota area of the state.

LASTMA, in a statement on Wednesday, signed by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, said the weapons used against its officers included cutlasses, iron, broken bottles, and local charms.

The agency revealed that one of the officers, Oguntimehin Ajibola, was injured in his left eye with broken bottles by the attackers and had been admitted at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

According to preliminary investigation by the agency, members of TOAN, Ojota branch, numbering about 20, had attacked the officers after they were informed that the Toyota Camry FKJ 161 HB of their newly elected chairman, known as Henro, was detained for illegal diversion by LASTMA officials at Ojota. Church guard in court for stealing 180 chairs (Punch)

A guard, Ese Edet, has been arraigned before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for allegedly stealing 180 pieces of chairs worth N1.4m from a branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in the Somolu area of the state.

Our correspondent gathered that Edet was employed by a firm, Bon Douglas Security Company, Itire, Surulere, and was posted to guard the church at Palmgroove, Somolu.

His manager, Monday Oluwareghan, was said to have made a report at the Somolu Police Station after it was discovered that out of the 220 chairs in the church, Edet allegedly stole and sold 180 pieces.

However, the suspect reportedly confessed to selling only five. Read more

Lagos court remands 73-year-old filmed defiling girl (Punch)

A 73-year-old man, Dukuye Ohofete, has been remanded in prison custody for allegedly defiling a five-year-old girl.

The defendant was arraigned before the Samuel Ilori Magistrates’ Court, Ogba, Lagos State, after he was recorded by a neighbour while perpetrating the act.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency disclosed this in a statement signed by an official, Adejoke Ladenegan-Oginni, on Tuesday.

The statement read in part, “The mother of the survivor was reported to have been separated from the child’s father six months ago. She, alongside the survivor, visited the alleged perpetrator, who’s a family friend, on December 14, 2022. Read more

Soldiers kill guest as siblings clash at funeral (Punch)

A guest, David Chinonso, has been reportedly killed at Owode, Ogombo community, in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State, after some military men stormed the burial of one late Mathew Ekpu.

The uniformed men, numbering 15, were said to have arrived at the venue in an attempt to stop the corpse from being interred on the premises of the deceased.

This led to a confrontation, as one of the deceased’s sons, Victor, was hit in the head with an iron, while Chinonso was shot in the chest.

The children of the deceased, who spoke to PUNCH Metro, accused their sibling, Richard, of leading the attack, which happened on Saturday, November 19, 2022. Read more

Protest as Lagos policemen enforcing ban kill motorcyclist (Punch)

Policemen attached to the Sagamu Road Police Division, Lagos State Police Command, have allegedly shot dead a motorcyclist, Stephen Alabi, aka Doctor, at Sabo Market, in the Ikorodu area of the state.

Alabi and his colleagues were said to be at a park close to the Sabo Market when the policemen arrived to impound motorcycles from riders operating against the ban on motorcycle operations in the state.

A motorcyclist, Olawale Olawuwo, while speaking with our correspondent, said the policemen were attempting to seize a bike from his colleague when Alabi intervened, adding that one of the policemen shot him.

Olawuwo said, “The incident happened on Thursday; motorcyclists were at our park at the front gate of the Sabo Market when policemen stormed the premises to impound motorcycles. They were about seizing a bike from a motorcyclist when the deceased met them at the front gate of the market around 3pm. Read more

Orphan buys foodstuffs with fraud proceeds, bags jail (Punch)

A 21-year-old man, Gabriel Sylvester, has pleaded guilty to fraud charges after he was arraigned before Justice R.A. Oshodi of the Special Offences Court, Ikeja, Lagos State.

Sylvester was among suspects between the ages of 18 and 30 with no source of livelihood, who were raided by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos on August 29, 2022.

An Iphone 6S was recovered from the suspect.

According to the prosecuting counsel, F. Ofoma, the defendant confessed to receiving an Apple gift card worth $100, which he converted to N25,000. Read more

Worker arraigned for stealing 426 cartons of spaghetti (Punch)

A 35-year-old worker, Chris Iruonagbe, has been accused of stealing 426 cartons of spaghetti belonging to the company he worked for.

Iruonagbe was arraigned before Chief Magistrate L.O. Owolabi sitting at the Ogba Magistrates’ Court, Ogba, Lagos State, on two counts of conspiracy and stealing.

The defendant was alleged to have conspired with other fleeing workers to steal the goods valued at N3.5m.

It was said that the defendant and the fleeing accomplices committed the offences on November 22 on Regina Coker Street, in the Ikeja area of the state. Read more

Man arraigned for stealing tricycle in Lagos (Punch)

A 29-year-old man, David Ochasi, has been arraigned before the Yaba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for allegedly stealing a tricycle worth N1 million in the Bariga area of the state.

Our correspondent gathered that the yellow tricycle with registration number MD6M14PAXM4F04425 and engine number AK4FM4304886 belonged to one Ayodele Osesan who lives in the same area as the suspect.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Magaji Haruna, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on January 25, 2022, at Odunsanya Street, Bariga.

NAFDAC seizes N8m fake, adulterated wines in Lagos (Leadership)

The National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), on Tuesday, disclosed that it intercepted N8million worth of fake, unwholesome, counterfeit alcoholic and non-alcoholic wines from Lagos market.

In a press statement by the agency and a copy made available to LEADERSHIP, it said, the interceptions were done at the Apongbon market in Lagos.

According to the statement, many of the offending products were sold by merchants underneath the bridge and were mopped up by the enforcement officers and Federal Task Force (FTF) team of the agency.

The statement reads; “enforcement Officers of the NAFDAC and its FTF team earlier this week visited the popular Apongbon market in Lagos as part of its effort to eradicate fake, unwholesome, and counterfeit alcoholic and non-alcoholic wines and drinks from circulation. Read more

Lagos police arrest 2 fake visa dealers, retrieve 33 passports of 4 countries (Guardian)

Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old fake visa issuer, Peter Oghenekome, and his 57-year-old accomplice, Friday Boro, in Satellite town, Lagos.

The duo have been issuing fake visas to different nationals for years before their arrest after a victim raised an alarm.

Items recovered from Oghenekome and his accomplice include, 18 Nigerian passports, nine Ghanaian passports, four Camerounian passports, two Eritrean passports and one seal.

Speaking with The Guardian, spokesperson for Lagos State Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, said: “We arrested the suspects after someone was issued a visa and decided to do further investigation on it and he discovered that it was fake.  “The man reported to the police and we arrested the agent, who took us to Oghenekome. Police arraign man for allegedly breaching Lagos community peace (Guardian)

Inspector General of Police (IGP) has arraigned Ganiyu Aminu before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court sitting in Yaba, for allegedly conspiring to disturb the peace of  Ayobo Community, in Lagos.

Aminu was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun for allegedly conducting himself in a disorderly manner, which caused the people of the neighbourhood to be in apprehension of reasonable fear.  

While arraigning the defendant, the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Morufu Animashaun told the court that the defendant forcefully entered at 34, Ferguson Osagie Street, Ayobo, without lawful permission.

Animashaun also told the court that Aminu entered the property managed by one Hassan Alli on behalf of the Soremekun family in Ayobo without lawful permission and injured Alli on his toe. Read more
