Court orders Lagos to probe killing of journalist during #EndSars (Punch)

A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the Lagos State Government to conduct a thorough investigation into the death of Pelumi Onifade, a 20-year-old reporter who was arrested by the police during the #EndSARS protests in 2020 and later found dead in a mortuary.

The court also directed the government to conduct a coroner’s inquest to determine the cause of death and identify those responsible for the journalist’s demise.

In a statement by the Communications Officer, Media Rights Agenda, Idowu Adewale, the judgment was delivered by Justice Ayokunle Olayinka Faji in a suit filed by the MRA against the police and the state government. Read more

The port access roads in Lagos have become battlegrounds of extortion and violence, leading to a grave crisis for truck drivers.

According to the truckers, the situation on Lagos’ port access roads, especially in the Apapa-Ijora and Tin Can-Mile 2 areas, has deteriorated into a critical problem.

Here, gangs of local thugs, known as “area boys,” and corrupt security personnel have turned these routes into a battleground for extortion and violence. Truck drivers, essential to the logistics and supply chain, are often subjected to severe harassment, including physical assaults and sabotage, if they refuse to pay bribes. Read more

The #EndBadGovernance protesters in Rivers State on Tuesday marched in large numbers to the Port Harcourt residence of the former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

In a viral video, the protesters could be seen chanting and carrying placards with various inscriptions.

The majority of the protesters were seen sitting on the tarred road in front of Wike’s mansion which was heavily guarded by uniformed police officers. Read more

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said it has accepted the apology of former Senate Chief Whip Ali Ndume, who was stripped of his position for speaking out against hardship in the country.

The Senate removed Ndume (Borno South) from the position on July 17 for criticising Tinubu’s administration and replaced him with Senator Tahir Monguno (Borno North), following a letter from APC national chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, and the party’s national secretary, Bashir Ajibola, in that regard.

However, after addressing journalists at a meeting of the APC National Working Committee and the lawmakers, Ganduje said the party’s administrative organ is writing to the Senate about the outcome of the interface so that the Red Chamber can review its earlier position. Read more
