Court remands displaced person for raping 9-year-old (Guardian)
A Makurdi Chief Magistrate’s Court on Monday remanded a 30-year-old Internally Displaced Person (IDP), Titus Atime, in a correction centre.
Atime was remanded for allegedly having forceful sexual intercourse with a nine-year-old girl through the anus.
The police on Monday charged the defendant, who lives at Daudu IDP Camp in Guma Local Government Area of Benue, with Unnatural Offence. Read more

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has adjourned to Tuesday to continue the pre-hearing of the petitions challenging the declaration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President-elect.
The panel scheduled the pre-hearing of the petitions from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) for Tuesday while the petitions of the Labour Party (LP) and its Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi had been adjourned to Wednesday.
It asked all the parties to identify issues they would be objecting to before the next pre-hearing session. Read more
69-year-old sits 2023 UTME, to study medicine (Punch)
A 69-year-old man named Babatunde Fabiyi was part of the candidates who wrote the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, with the aim of studying medicine at the University of Lagos, information obtained from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has revealed.
Our correspondent gathered that Fabiyi, who picked UNILAG as his first choice, picked the Lagos State University popularly known as LASU as his second choice with the same aim of studying medicine.
The examination body noted that the sexagenarian picked the Yaba College of Technology as his third choice to study science laboratory technology. Read more
Action Alliance withdraws petition against Tinubu’s victory (Tribune)
The Action Alliance (AA) and its Presidential candidate, Solomon David Okanigbuan, on Monday, withdrew their Petition challenging the declaration of Bola Tinubu as the winner of the February 25 presidential election.
At the commencement of the pre-hearing session of the Presidential Election Petition Court sitting in Abuja, counsel to the petitioners, Oba Maduabuchi (SAN) moved a motion for the withdrawal of the petition.
According to Maduabuchi, “We have a motion filed on May 3, seeking an order of the court for the withdrawal of our petition, and upon withdrawal, the petition should be dismissed”. Read more

The Supreme Court has scheduled Tuesday, May 9, 2023, for judgment in the appeal filed by former Osun Governor, Gboyega Oyetola against the election of Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
A five-member panel of the highest court in Nigeria announced the date and time which is fixed at 2:00 pm for judgment after taking arguments from lawyers to parties on Monday.
In his appeal, Oyetola of the All Progressive Congress (APC) is seeking the reversal of the March 25 judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja which affirmed Adeleke’s victory in the July 2022 governorship election. Read more

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has assured the public that Friday, May 5 fire incident at the Enugu Zonal Command of the Commission will not affect its operations.
The Secretary to the Commission, Dr. George Ekpungu gave the assurance on Sunday, May 7, 2023 during an inspection visit to the Command.
Speaking with journalists after a tour of the facilities affected by the fire incident, Ekpungu expressed relief that the inferno did not affect critical components of the work of the Commission, noting that the digitisation process initiated by the Abdulrasheed Bawa leadership of the Commission had ensured that all the Commission’s processes are fully digitilised with back-up at the central server in Abuja. Foreign ministers from Arab League member states have agreed to reinstate Syria’s membership after its suspension more than 10 years ago, according to Iraqi state media.

Great Britain won 14 medals at the second Para-cycling Road World Cup of the season in Ostend, Belgium.
Of those, seven were gold, including two apiece for Fin Graham (MC3) and Fran Brown (WC1) who won both the road race and time trial in their classes.
