Court remands man for seducing, abducting married ex-wife (DailyTrust)
A Shari’a court in Kano on Tuesday, ordered that a 38-year-old man, Musa Sa’idu, be remanded in a correctional centre for allegedly abducting and enticing his former wife, Fatima Ahmad.
Sa’idu, who resides in Ganjuwa LGA of Bauchi State, is charged with enticing a married woman and abduction.
The judge, Malam Nura Yusuf-Ahmad, who gave the order, adjourned the matter until Sep-tember 29, for hearing.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Aliyu Abideen, informed the court that Alhaji Amadu Yahuza of Kunchi LGA Kano, reported the matter at the Gama Police Division Kano on September 13.
He alleged that, “The defendant sent transport fare to his former wife and lured her to an un-known place in Bauchi State,” he said. Read more
Lagos policeman enforcing Okada ban shoots guard (Punch)
A security guard, Koleosho Abayomi, has demanded justice after a policeman allegedly shot him in his thigh at the Lekki Peninsula Scheme II, in the Eti Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the cop, alongside three colleagues, all attached to the Ogombo Police Station, stormed the Lekki Peninsula Scheme II to enforce the government ban on motorcycle operations on the estate when the incident happened.
Abayomi, while speaking to our correspondent, said following the ban, some commercial motorcyclists were allowed to operate on the estate to ease the movement of residents, adding that when the policemen got to the gate, one of his colleagues, Friday, stopped their patrol vehicle.
Angered by the action, Abayomi said the policemen got down from the vehicle to challenge the security guard for stopping them. Read more
Lagos takes delivery of trains for Redline rail system (Vanguard)
The Lagos State Government has on Tuesday taken delivery of new trains from Milwaukee, United States, for its Redline rail project, a 37-kilometre intracity railway system.
The state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, who disclosed this on Tuesday, said the delivery was in line with government’s determination to deliver the operation of the Red Line Rail System by the first quarter of 2023.
Omotoso said, “Talgo Series 8 Trains, the 2 Nos. Ten and Eleven Car trains which were bought from Milwaukee are here.”
He explained that it was necessary to decouple the train into 21 individual cars for effective transportation to Lagos, adding that the trains will be recoupled with the help of rolling stock Engineers from Talgo, the company that manufactured the trains in the United State of America. Read more

Senate frustrates law on power rotation (Sun)
Attempts to legalise power rotation in the country, specifically across the six geo-political zones, yesterday, suffered a setback in Senate.
The bill, sponsored by Patrick Abba Moro, was to pass second reading after his lead debate, but was vehemently opposed by many of the senators who contributed.
Moro had, in his lead debate on the piece of legislation entitled: “A bill for an Act to Provide for the Rotation of Power and for other related matters there in 2022,” said there was need for a law to legalise rotation of power across the various geographical divides in the country.
He posited that such a legislation, if passed into law, would not only promote the principles of equity, fairness and justice among the various geographical divides, but also ensure sense of belonging required for nationhood of a heterogeneous country like Nigeria. Read more
Oando Foundation takes hygiene awareness to schools (ThisDay)
To ensure that children understand their environmental responsibilities and become change agents, Oando Foundation partnered Sumitomo Chemical to execute the second phase of the Clean Our World (COW) project in 12 of its adopted public primary schools in five Lagos communities.Through the project, the organisers said over 13,000 children, teachers, government education managers and community members were reached with the knowledge of sustainable environmental practices and proper waste management approaches.
The project strengthened the capacity of 205 stakeholders on environmental education and upcycling, instituted a community-level waste collection protocol, and recruited volunteers demonstrating a stronger commitment to adopting better waste management practices.Through the initiative, 8,570kg of recyclable waste was collected in target communities, and proceeds from the buyback scheme were substituted for basic school supplies and donated to participating schools.
Clean-up and sensitisation campaigns were also executed across five communities, encouraging environmentally responsible behaviours among residents.The close-out event was recently held at the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LSUBEB) Auditorium, Maryland, to celebrate achievements from the COW phase two project and award prizes to the best performing schools. Lagos gives N1.56b grants to aid 3,673 youths in business (Independent)
The Lagos State Government has through the State Employment Trust Fund supported 3,673 businesses with the sum of N1.56billion as grants and provided mentorship and business advisory to young people to start and grow their businesses.
Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State Governor stated this on Tuesday at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI)/Lagos Economic Summit Group (LESG) Private-Public Partnership Pre-Ehingbeti Stakeholders Engagement on “Building a Sustainable Future for a Greater Lagos, held at the Commerce House, Victoria Island Lagos.
Sanwo-Olu who was represented by Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, his Deputy added that the state government also supported 1,835 small businesses with N985 million and this has led to the creation of 10,500 direct jobs in the state.
He added that his administration has put N1billion into Agricultural Value Chain businesses to provide food and create jobs in the state. Read more
Nigeria may begin local production of vaccines in 2024 (Guardian)
Ahead of Nigeria Pharma Manufacturing Expo (NPME) 2022, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO), May & Baker, Patrick Ajah, yesterday, in Lagos, said the most populous black nation might begin local production of vaccines in 2024.
NPME, scheduled for October 18 to 19, 2022, in Ikeja, is organised by Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Group of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (PMG-MAN), a sub sector of MAN, that represents all manufacturers of pharmaceuticals and allied products in the country.
Ajah, at a press conference to announce the exhibition with the theme, “Advancing the frontiers of medicine security in Nigeria, expanding local pharma manufacturing in the era of AfCFTA”, said: “Hopefully before the end of this year, there is going to be groundbreaking for the local manufacture of vaccines in Nigeria. Once this is done, I think in two years, we shall begin to manufacture vaccines locally.”
He said the Federal Government’s partnership with May & Baker, which gave rise to the Joint Venture (JV) company, Biovaccines Nigeria Limited (BVNL), is making tremendous progress. Read more
Shareholders approve N201b Ardova revenue for 2021 (DailyTrust)
Shareholders of Ardova Plc, an indigenous energy group, have approved the N201.44 billion revenue growth of the firm during its 43rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Lagos on Tuesday.
The growth represents 10.21 per cent from the N181.66 billion mark earlier reported in 2020.
The company also disclosed a gross revenue of N192.47 billion in the year under review, representing a 5.95 per cent increase from the 2020 revenue of N181.66 billion.
Its shareholders’ funds grew by 6.58% y-o-y, to N20.91 billion in 2021 as against the 19.62 billion in 2020 as a result of an 11.85 per cent growth posted in retained earnings. The group also expanded its total asset base by 95.7 per cent y-o-y to N126.80 billion. Read more

In a video shared online Tuesday, Reynolds, who has played Deadpool in the eponymous film series since 2016, shared an update about its upcoming third film — and revealed it will feature a special guest hero.
“We’ve been working very hard on the next ‘Deadpool’ film for a good long while now,” Reynolds says in the video while sitting on a couch. “I’ve had to really search my soul on this one.”

He said he called up an electronic collaborator who had been loosely toying with a remix of the track, which then got sent to Beyoncé’s camp.

Iran protest death toll rises to 76 – rights group (BBC)
At least 76 protesters have been killed by Iranian security forces during 11 days of unrest sparked by the death of a woman in custody, activists say.
Iran Human Rights (IHR), a Norway-based organisation, accused authorities of using disproportionate force and live ammunition to suppress the dissent.
State media have put the number of dead at 41, including several security personnel, and blamed “rioters”.
Hundreds of people have also been arrested, 20 of them journalists. Read more
Next ‘‘Star Trek’’ movie officially removed from December 2023 calendar (THR)
Paramount officially announced Tuesday it is removing its untitled Star Trek movie from a Dec. 22, 2023 release date in theaters.
The news wasn’t a surprise. In late August, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that director Adam Shakman has dropped out of the project due to scheduling issues amid his jump to Fantastic Four for Marvel.
“Matt Shakman is an incredibly talented filmmaker, and we regret the timing didn’t align for him to direct our upcoming Star Trek film,” Paramount Pictures said in a statement at the time. “We are grateful for his many contributions, are excited about the creative vision of this next chapter and look forward to bringing it to audiences all around the world.”

Britney Spears and Elton John’s ‘‘Hold Me Closer’’ gets stunning music video (Variety)
Britney Spears and Elton John have released the video counterpart to “Hold Me Closer,” a colorful, nearly four-minute music video full of interpretive dance numbers. However, it does not include appearances from Spears or John.
The music video was directed by Tanu Muino, who also helmed Harry Styles’ “As It Was” and Lil Nas X’s “Montero,” along with several other top visual treatments to come out of pop music in the past two years.
The music video starts off in Mexico City, with dancers dressed in vibrant blue and yellow garbs who move seamlessly as a reflection of “human embrace, beautifully capturing an immeasurable feeling of intimacy so missing from the world through the turmoil and chaos of recent times,” as it states in the video’s official press release.
“Going into this video, I knew there would be a lot of emotional expectations the audience and fans would have,” added Muino. “With this responsibility, I had to do something different and unexpected. The visuals had to be different. The dance had to be forward-thinking to raise eyebrows and make Elton and Britney proud.” Read more
Hurricane Ian leaves Cuba in dark, prompts evacuations in Florida (AlJazeera)
Cuba’s electrical grid has collapsed, leaving the entire country without power, after Hurricane Ian tore through the western end of the island, causing widespread flooding.
Thousands were evacuated ahead of the violent storm, which made landfall early on Tuesday in Cuba’s Pinar del Rio province.
Lázaro Guerra, technical director of the Electric Union of Cuba, said a failure in the national electric system, partly as a result of the storm, had affected infrastructure.
Guerra said teams would work through the night and early on Wednesday to restore power, according to state media. Read more
Zelenskyy says no talks with Putin if Ukrainian land annexed (Global)
Ukraine’s president warned Tuesday that Russia’s just concluded “sham referendums” and attempts to annex Ukrainian territory rule out any talks with Moscow as long as Vladimir Putin remains president, and called for Russia’s “complete isolation” and tough new global sanctions.
Speaking to the U.N. Security Council by video link over Russian objections, Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged additional military and financial support to defend Ukraine “so the aggressor would lose,” and “clear and legally binding guarantees of collective security” for his country in response to Russia’s latest grab for Ukrainian territory.
The referendums, denounced by Kyiv and its Western allies as rigged, took place in the Russian-controlled Luhansk and Kherson regions, and in occupied areas of the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions. They are widely viewed as a pretext for announcements that Russia is annexing the territories, just as it annexed Crimea in 2014. Read more

Algeria extended their dominance over Nigeria as they beat a disappointing Super Eagles 2-1 in a friendly game at the Miloud Hadefi Olympic Complex, Oran on Tuesday night, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Eagles went into the game seeking to end the Foxes’ five-year dominance, with Djamel Belmadi’s side having emerged winners in their last three meetings, scoring six goals and conceding once, since a 3-1 loss to the Eagles in November 2016 in Uyo.

Anyanwu Marcello has appealed to the Electoral Committee of the NFF to reconsider his disqualification and grant him waiver to contest for the presidency.

Brazil players have banana thrown their direction during goal celebration (ESPN)
A banana was thrown from the crowd at Brazil players celebrating a goal in a friendly against Tunisia in Paris on Tuesday.
Tottenham Hotspur forward Richarlison, who is Black, had just scored the team’s second goal in a 5-1 win at Parc des Princes when the banana was thrown toward him and the other Brazilians celebrating near one of the corner flags. What appeared to be a water bottle and another object also were thrown toward them.
Brazil was using the match to make a statement against racism, with the players posing before kickoff in front of a sign that said: “Without our black players, we wouldn’t have stars on our shirt” — a reference to the five stars above the team crest that represents their five World Cup titles.
The Brazilian soccer federation condemned the incident and reinforced its stance to “fight against racism,” while the federation president said he was shocked with what happened. Read more

Frank Warren, co-promoter for WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, has not spoken to his boxer since Monday’s blowup over the stalled negotiations to finalize a domestic clash with Anthony Joshua.
The two sides were discussing the possibility of a showdown for December 3 the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
On Monday, Fury posted several videos to social media, where he declared the fight was “off” because Joshua had yet to return a signed contract.

Phil Mickelson and 3 other LIV rebels drop out of lawsuit challenging PGA Tour (Mirror)
Phil Mickelson, Ian Poulter, Talor Gooch and Hudson Swafford have removed their names from the lawsuit filed by a group of LIV Golf players against the PGA Tour. LIV Golf and the PGA Tour have been locked in battle since the Saudi-funded series kicked off this summer.
LIV have been able to lure a number of the game’s biggest names at the expense of the PGA Tour thanks to multi-million pound signing on fees and lucrative prize money. In response the Tour looked to take harsh action on those defecting, suspending them from their competition.
This led to 11 players beginning a legal battle against the American-based circuit, with the Saudi-funded series itself later joining the case.
Mickelson seemed to be the early trailblazer of the lawsuit, but now the 52-year-old has made the decision to step away from the legal battle. In a statement per the Wall Street Journal , he said: “I am pleased that the players on Tour are finally being heard, respected, and valued and are benefiting from the changes recently implemented.
