Court remands two men for allegedly stealing 15 crates of eggs (Vanguard)

A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday ordered that two men who allegedly stole 15 crates of eggs, be remanded in a correctional facility for 30 days, pending legal advice.

The police charged Lucky Sunday, 27, a driver and Lukeman Ogunleye, 23, a furniture maker with two counts of conspiracy and robbery

The plea of the two defendants were however not taken by the court because of the nature of the offence.

Chief Magistrate A.O. Adedayo ordered that Sunday and Ogunleye be remanded in Ikoyi Custodial Centre for 30 days. Read more

A 24-year-old armed robbery suspect, John Zion, has told the police that a former secondary school mate introduced him to crime in return for shelter and food that he offered him.

The police told our correspondent yesterday that Zion said during investigation that he became homeless when his father kicked him out of the house, allegedly acting on the instruction of his stepmother.

The suspect, who the police arrested along with two others for allegedly attacking residents of Awoyaya in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, was said to have confessed in his statement saying, “I began sleeping in markets and mechanic workshops as a result of my father’s action. I met a lot of under-aged children there, some of who had run away from home, like me, and had nowhere to go. Read more

COVID-19 violations: Again, Lagos shuts Farms City, Quilox, other entertainment facilities in Lekki (Vanguard)

For the second time since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in the state, the Lagos State Government through, the state Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA had again sealed Farms City on Admiralty Way Lekki and Ajah Quilox Pool and Bar in Ajah area of the state.

The facilities were said to have been sealed off for contravening various sections of the extant law and also constituting a setback to combative efforts to flatten the curve of the COVID-19 in the state.

The enforcement exercise was carried out in the middle of the night at the weekend, along the Lekki-Ajah axis of the state. Two other entertainment and restaurant outlets namely: Page One in Ajah and Bien Mange in Abraham Adesanya Estate were also sealed. Read more

Doctor dies in Rivers crash 48 hours after completing NYSC (Punch)

A medical doctor, Urenna Iroegbu, has died after a commercial vehicle which she was in drove against traffic, causing an accident along Onne Road, Port Harcourt.

The incident occurred barely two days after she completed her National Youth Service Corps programme.

The PUNCH learnt that Iroegbu graduated from Imo State University last year after spending eight years studying medicine.

On Saturday, she boarded a Toyota Sienna commercial vehicle to Akwa Ibom State but never made it home. Read more

Akeredolu emerges APC governorship candidate, records landslide victory (Vanguard)

Incumbent governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, has won the governorship primary election held on Monday landslide.

Akeredolu polled 2,725 to become the candidate of the party, Olusola Oke came second with 262 votes while lsaacs Kekemeke came a distant third with 19 votes

Over 3,127 delegates voted in the election which commenced by 2pm and ended by 820pm.

Akeredolu led in all the 18 council areas of the state. Read more

Akpabio to lawmakers: Most NDDC contracts awarded to you (DailyTrust)

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, has alleged that most of the contracts of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) were awarded to the National Assembly members.

The minister, in Abuja yesterday, said this to the House of Representatives Committee on NDDC investigating financial mismanagement in the NDDC. “Most of the contracts in NDDC are awarded to National Assembly members,” he said.

A member of the committee, Boma Goodhead (PDP, Rivers) challenged Akpabio: “You were a member of the NDDC Committee in the 8th Assembly. Are you telling me that lots of jobs were awarded to you?” Read more

COVID-19: Ekiti govt enforces face mask, arrests 100 offenders (DailyTrust)

Operatives of the Ekiti State Traffic Management Agency (EKSTMA) yesterday arrested no fewer than 100 motorists in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, allegedly for violating the use of the face mask on COVID-19 protocols.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Wale Fapohunda, had on Friday warned the general public in the state that violators of the face mask usage from Monday July 20 would be arrested and prosecuted.

The General Manager, EKSTMA, Chief Femi Olanrewaju, who led the agency’s operatives during the operation, yesterday, said over 100 offenders were arrested in the first day of the enforcement. Read more

Mallam Isa Funtua is dead (Vanguard)

Newspaper patron and influential media leader, Mallam Ismaila Isa Funtua is dead.

He died in Abuja while undergoing a routine medical check-up. He was 78 years old.

He reportedly suffered a massive heart attack during the medical check-up.

Since Alhaji Ismaila Isa Funtua commenced his working career at the Katsina Native Authority many decades ago, he remained as constant as the northern star in the polity.

In his public and private endeavours, the Manchester University-trained administrator was indisputably remarkable.

His feats as a businessman, media patron and administrator distinguished him as an exceptional statesman, whose image was profitable to Nigeria’s developmental trajectory.

Funtua was one of the few who could truly be called statesmen given the admiration he commanded. Read more

WHO sounds alarm at spread of coronavirus in Africa (Aljazeera)

The World Health Organization (WHO) voiced alarm on Monday at the spread of COVID-19 in Africa, warning South Africa’s surging numbers could be a “precursor” for outbreaks across the continent.

“I am very concerned right now that we are beginning to see an acceleration of disease in Africa,” WHO’s emergencies chief Michael Ryan told a virtual news conference.

Until recently, Africa remained relatively unscathed by the pandemic compared with rising numbers in other parts of the world. Read more

Zimbabwe police detain prominent journalist, protest leader (Aljazeera)

Zimbabwean police have arrested an opposition official and a journalist, accusing them of inciting violence ahead of street demonstrations planned for next week by activists who charge government corruption has exacerbated economic hardship.

The journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono, has a huge following on Twitter, where he regularly posts about alleged government corruption. He has also been using his account to encourage Zimbabweans to speak out and act against corruption.

“They are breaking into my home. Alert the world!” Chin’ono tweeted as police raided his home on Monday. His lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa said he was detained at a police station in the capital, Harare, but was being denied access to lawyers. Read more

Damascus targeted in missile strike, Syrian state media blames Israel (RT)

Syrian air defenses have engaged incoming “hostile targets” in the capital city of Damascus, state media reported. Footage circulating online shows explosions in the skies above the city.

Damascus came under an apparent missile strike late on Monday. Sirens were heard across the city, while air defense systems intercepted incoming projectiles.

A lawyer who shot dead a female judge’s son before turning the gun on himself had ranted online about “Feminazi rule”.

Roy Den Hollander gunned down Judge Esther Salas’ son in New Jersey on Sunday and badly wounded her husband.

The gunman dressed as a FedEx delivery man before opening fire at their North Brunswick home, police said.

Den Hollander wrote on his website that the jurist was “a lazy and incompetent Latina judge appointed by Obama”. Read more

The UK has “immediately and indefinitely” suspended its extradition agreement with Hong Kong in reaction to China’s new national security law there, amid rising tensions between Beijing and London.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told the House of Commons on Monday that China’s “imposition” of a new national security law in Hong Kong was a “serious violation” of its international obligations. He also said that an existing arms embargo on mainland China will be extended to Hong Kong. Read more

Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated sci-fi action flick Tenet has been delayed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The film was previously scheduled to open in July this year but was pushed back a further two times to August.

Now the release date has been removed entirely from Warner Bros’ calender.

However there is still some hope, as the studio says a new date for this year will be shared soon.

Nigeria goalkeeper struggles to save her own life (BBC)

Former Nigeria goalkeeper Bidemi Aluko has said she is unable to have chemotherapy for breast cancer as hospitals in Nigeria focus on treating coronavirus.

After a diagnosis of breast cancer in January 2019, Aluko was braced for a-year-long session of chemotherapy and possible surgery, and the former Super Falcons keeper underwent 10 chemotherapy sessions before the coronavirus pandemic struck.

But now, in common with hospitals across the country, the hospital in Ibadan where Aluko was receiving the treatment has told patients with other conditions to stay away. Read more

Child athletes in Japan have suffered physical, verbal and sexual abuse while participating in sport activities, according to a new Human Rights Watch (HRW) report.

Released on Monday, the 67-page report (PDF) documented the experiences of more than 800 athletes in 50 sports, including first-hand accounts from athletes being choked, whipped with whistles or racquets and sexually harassed.
