An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, on Monday, sentenced one Tanko Morgan, 30, to one year imprisonment for stealing 50 metres of armoured cable valued N600,000 and N2 million suspended ceiling boards.
The Magistrate Mrs M.O. Tanimola, sentenced Morgan after he pleaded guilty to the four-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, unlawful damage and breach of peace.
Tanimola, however, granted Morgan’s co-defendant, Tunde Arinyewun, 45, who pleaded not guilty to the four count charge, bail.
Delivering her judgment, the magistrate held that the convict was sentenced based on his guilty plea and the evidence tendered by the prosecution.
She said that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the convict committed the offence.
Tanimola sentenced him to one year imprisonment in a correctional facility.
The Magistrate however, granted bail to Arinyewun in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case until Nov. 6 for his trial.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Bassey Sunday, had told the court that the two men committed the offences between May 23 and June 10 at China Town Express, Ogudu, Lagos.
He said that Morgan, a security guard working at Beton-Bau Company situated at China Town, Ogudu, and Arinyewun, a taxi driver, who operated from a park close to China Town conspired to steal from the company’s premises.”
The facility manager of the company had received a call on June 14 from the company’s driver, one Mr Shina, stating that the warehouse roof had been removed by breeze.”
He also told him (manager) to come down to the warehouse to check the items inside, on getting there, the facility manager discovered that the armor cable kept inside the store had reduced by 50 metres and valued at N600,000.”
Also 1000 square metres of suspended ceiling covers valued N2,000,000 had also been stolen, all totaling N2, 600, 000,” Sunday said.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 168, 287(7), 350 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Magistrate however, granted bail to Arinyewun in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.She adjourned the case until Nov 6 for trial. (NAN)
