Cousins “rob, kill” tricycle operator in Ogun (DailyTrust)

Police Command in Ogun State has arrested two cousins, Damilola Famoriyo and Akinbayo Emmanuel Abiodun for allegedly hacking one Amos Oyemechi Chuckwuka to death after snatching his tricycle.

The suspects were arrested on Thursday, February 9, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi who confirmed the arrest of the suspects to journalists in Abeokuta on Saturday, said the suspects allegedly killed Chuckwuka and dumped his body at a riverbank in Ijebu-Ode.

Oyeyemi said, the suspects were arrested following information received by policemen attached to the Obalende Divisional Headquarters, Ijebu Ode, on the 13th of December 2022, that a dead body which was later identified as that of a tricycle rider was found on the riverbank at the Agoro area of Ijebu Ode. Naira Scarcity: 2 killed, many injured in Lagos, Ogun, Ondo protests (Sun)

Two persons were killed and many injured when pandemonium erupted in Lagos, Ogun and Ondo states on Friday owing to the scarcity of naira notes. 

The protest, which started from Lagos, escalated to Ogun State along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. It claimed two lives and injured many. 

In Lagos, many banks were attacked, especially at Lekki and Ajah areas of the state.

The crisis started in the popular Mile 12 Market, Lagos when some traders rejected old Naira notes from customers. The customers took to the streets when they failed to convince the traders that the case was in the court and that the state government had instructed that people should continue to trade with old Naira notes. Sanwo-Olu calls for calm amidst fuel, naira scarcity crises (Punch)

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appealed to Lagosians to remain calm amidst the fuel and naira scarcity crises resulting in chaos in the state.

Sanwo-Olu made the appeal in a live conference on Saturday.

Speaking, the governor noted that it was necessary to address residents in the state in view of the ongoing situation in the country, regarding the change of currency notes and the fuel scarcity and its attendant hardship.

Naira Redesign: CIBN sues for calm, reassures banks will remain open (Guardian)

The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) said it was liaising with the Body of Banks CEOs to address the current challenges caused by the cash swap and scarcity of the redesigned banknotes.

Dr Ken Opara, President/Chairman of Council, CIBN, said this in a statement on Saturday in Lagos.

He said that the banks would continue to remain open to serve the public as long as it was safe to do so. Read more

Gunmen bomb Ogidi police area command, kill 3 policemen (Vanguard)

Gunmen have again attacked the Ogidi Police Area Command in Idemili North local government area of Anambra State, killing three policemen in the process.

It was the second time in five days the hoodlums attacked the station. During the first attack, one of the gunmen was killed and the policemen on duty were able to drive them away.

This time, they succeeded in causing colossal damage by burning the building and destroying other valuable items in the area command. Read more 

5 parties adopt Atiku for presidency (Punch)

Barely a week to the 2023 general election, five out of the 18 political parties in Nigeria have adopted the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar.

The five parties announced this at the grand finale of the PDP’s presidential rally holding at the Mahmud Ribadu Square, in Yola, the Adamawa State capital on Saturday.

The parties are the Allied Peoples Movement, African Democratic Congress, National Rescue Movement, Action Alliance and Action Peoples Party. Read more 

Police arrest female gunrunner, 7 others in Zamfara (Channels)

Police in Zamfara State have arrested a female gunrunner who specialises in supplying arms and ammunition to bandits operating in the state

The spokesperson of the State Police Command Mohammed Shehu made this known while addressing newsmen at the police headquarters in Gusau town the state capital on Friday.

Shehu said the woman, Fatima Sani, 35 years old, was arrested following an intelligence report that she was bringing arms and ammunition to bandits in Zamfara State from Lafiya town in Nasarawa State. Read more

Judge Mathis, People’s Court canceled by Warner Bros. after more than 2 decades (Variety)

The verdict is in: Syndicated court staples “Judge Mathis” and “The People’s Court” will both end their run at the end of this season, Variety has confirmed. 

“Judge Mathis” will wrap after 24 seasons, while this most recent iteration of “The People’s Court” wraps after its 26th season. Season 24 and Season 26, respectively. 

Both shows come from Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Telepictures Productions and are distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. According to insiders, the decision was made due to the declining nature of the daytime syndication landscape. As local TV stations shrink their syndication dollars and the advertising marketplace shrinks for daytime syndication, first-run syndication has become a trickier landscape. At the same time, station groups have been expanding their local news broadcasts, also in a bid to save money. Read more

The Hangover and Bob’s Burgers actor Zach Galifianakis has landed himself a role in Disney’s upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch movie.

Details about the film, and the actor’s role, are being kept under wraps (according to Deadline, while TheWrap believes he will be playing Pleakley), but most of these live-action adaptations of animated Disney favourites have stuck very close to the originals.

Russia has committed crimes against humanity, says Kamala Harris (Guardian)

The Biden administration has formally concluded that Russia committed crimes against humanity during its nearly year-long invasion of Ukraine, Kamala Harris has said.

“In the case of Russia’s actions in Ukraine we have examined the evidence, we know the legal standards, and there is no doubt: these are crimes against humanity,” the US vice-president and former prosecutor said in prepared remarks delivered in a speech at the Munich security conference on Saturday.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has confirmed he has launched a bid to take over majority ownership of Manchester United.

Britain’s richest man, who is the chairman of INEOS, has formalised his interest in wresting control from the Glazer family, who announced the Red Devils were up for sale in November. Ratcliffe confirmed he was pursuing a takeover in January and he is one of the parties that tabled a bid for the club ahead of the soft deadline for offers on Friday.

Mikaela Shiffrin finished the world Alpine skiing championships with silver in her best event, the slalom, feeling the fatigue of two weeks of racing that included three medals, one gold and parting with her longtime coach earlier this week.

She finished 57 hundredths behind surprise Canadian winner Laurence St-Germain combining times from two runs in Meribel, France. German Lena Duerr earned bronze.

“It’s quite an unbelievable day after everything after these last two weeks,” Shiffrin said on the Swiss SRF broadcast. “It’s been the full range of emotions.
