The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, has raised the alarm that the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic may be imminent in Nigeria by December.

Abayomi, at a news briefing on Friday, said passengers coming into the country from high-burden countries might increase the spread of the virus.

He said, “Many Nigerians staying abroad will be returning home to celebrate Christmas with their families. Most of these people will be coming from countries where there is a heavy burden of COVID-19 and where we know the virus is changing and mutating. The potential drivers of a fourth wave in Lagos and Nigeria are passengers arriving, especially from heavy-burdened countries in Europe and the United States into Lagos. About 86 per cent of all inbound flights into Nigeria come through Lagos.Read more

House Dems pass $1.7T Biden spending plan despite $367B deficit warning from CBO (NYPost)

House Democrats narrowly passed President Biden’s $1.7 trillion social and environmental spending bill Friday over unified Republican opposition — and despite an official warning that it could add more than $350 billion to the nation’s deficit.

The 220-213 vote followed months of negotiations that cut the cost of Biden’s “Build Back Better Act” in half and multiple delays to win support from both the moderate and progressive wings of his party.

The massive spending plan also had to be decoupled from the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill that Biden signed into law earlier this week, even though progressives initially demanded that they be packaged together.

Hours before the vote, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) delayed Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) plans to bring the bill to the floor Thursday evening by using his “magic minute” to conduct a record-breaking, 8-hour-33-minute floor speech blasting the measure in addition to other progressive policies. Syrian doctor, Kassam Shahadah, settled in Poland as a war refugee three years ago and now volunteers on its border to help desperate Middle East migrants trying to enter after a perilous trek through freezing forest, Reuters reports.

He feels lucky to have won residence through asylum. And though he understands the same aspirations to life in the European Union in the new wave of migrants, he has seen enough in his volunteer work to advise them: Don’t do it this way.

“Every child dreams of a better life, of peace and everything that gives him joy and happiness. Everybody would want to escape from that country … It is hell,” Shahadah said, referring to his homeland from which some migrants have come.

“(But) it’s a deadly route,” Shahadah, 54, said in the hospital where he works as a family doctor in the north-eastern Polish town of Grajewo. “I would not advise anyone to make such a journey. It is very risky and often ends in failure.” Read more

Anthony Joshua is already “physically and mentally” preparing for a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk, a firm rebuttal to Tyson Fury’s hopes of securing his own undisputed fight.

WBC champion Fury’s “preference” for his next opponent would be Usyk, in a battle to crown the division’s No 1 heavyweight, rather than Dillian Whyte, his promoter Bob Arum had told Sky Sports.

But Joshua has rebuffed the suggestion he may “step aside” from his rematch with Usyk.

“AJ is already in camp physically and mentally for the Usyk rematch, and it’s all he has thought about since the night of the first fight,” his promoter Eddie Hearn told Sky Sports. Read more

Formula One: Red Bull ready to protest Mercedes rear wing, says Horner (StraitTimes)

Red Bull are concerned about the legality of the rear wing used by Formula One rivals Mercedes and will protest if they see something suspicious at this weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix, principal Christian Horner said on Friday (Nov 19).

Horner was speaking after stewards rejected a Mercedes request to review a decision not to punish Red Bull’s championship leader Max Verstappen for an incident with Lewis Hamilton at the previous race in Brazil.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, whose team lead Red Bull by 11 points in the constructors’ championship, told reporters earlier on Friday that the gloves were off in the title battle between the two teams.

Red Bull have long had suspicions about the Mercedes rear wing, with Verstappen feeling it with his hands after a Saturday sprint race in Brazil, earning himself a €50,000 (S$77,000) fine. Read more
