COVID-19: Lagos State mortality rate rises to 185 (Independent)
The Lagos State Government says it has recorded three new COVID-19 related deaths, raising the number of COVID-19 related deaths in the state to 185.
The state’s Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, made the disclosure through his Twitter account on Sunday while giving the state’s COVID-19 update for July 10.
He, however, did not give additional information on the sex, age, nationality or medical conditions of the deceased. Read more
American confined in Lagos hotel for 16 months rescued (Nation)
Police operatives have successfully rescued an American citizen, who was confined in a Lagos hotel, where she was held against her wish for over a year by a Nigerian man she met on social media
Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, DCP, Frank Mba, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday.
Mba said the victim, who hails from Washington DC, USA and is a retired civil servant in the US, arrived Nigeria on 13th February, 2019 on a visit to one Chukwuebuka Kasi Obiaku, a 34-year old man, from Ikeduru local government area of Imo State whom she met on Facebook. Read more
COVID-19: Lagos doctors begin strike Monday (Punch)
Doctors employed by the Lagos State Government will on Monday begin a three-day warning strike, The PUNCHhas learnt.
The Chairman of the Medical Guild, Lagos, Dr Oluwajimi Sodipo, at a briefing on Sunday, said the doctors were embarking on the strike after the ultimatum given to the Lagos State Government had expired.
He said, “Following the emergency congress of the Medical Guild held on June 27, we resolved that the previous 21 days ultimatum given to the state government be extended by a further two weeks during which representative council meeting should be held to review the resolutions of the congress and activate the three-day warning strike if 70 per cent of the Guild’s demands are not met.” Read more
Sanwo-Olu, Obasa, Agunbiade mourn Tunde Braimoh (Nation)
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and Majority Leader of the Assembly, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, have commiserated with the family, friends and associates of the late member of Lagos Assembly, Hon. Tunde Braimoh, who passed on Friday.
Until his death, the late Braimoh, who was running a second term represented Kosofe 11 and was chairman of the House committee on Information, Strategy and Security.
In a condolence message, Sanwo-Olu described late Buraimoh as a true democrat, who did his best for the people he served at various levels as Local Government Chairman and lawmaker. Read more
FG hands over National Theatre to CBN, bankers (Punch)
The Federal Government on Sunday handed over the National Theatre at Iganmu, Lagos State, to the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bankers Committee for rehabilitation.
During the handover ceremony of the facility which was constructed in 1976, the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, said the bankers were targeting one million job creation from the project in the next five years. Read more
COVID-19: Delta SSG discharged from isolation centre (Independent)
Delta Government has announced that the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Chiedu Ebie, has been discharged from the Isolation Centre in Asaba where he was being treated for COVID-19.
According to Mr Olisa Ifeajika, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ebie, who had been at the isolation centre for 21 days, was discharged on Sunday after testing negative for the virus. Read more

Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has detained leaders of Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN), Kano chapter, for alleged misappropriation of N10bn Federal government financial Intervention meant for rice farmers in Kano.
Chairman of the commission, Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimin-Gado, who confirmed the development at a press briefing, disclosed the commission’s investigation over diversion of the funds released to farmers in 2018 under the Anchor Borrower’s Scheme disbursed by the Central Bank of Nigeria. Read more

Sudan scraps apostasy law and alcohol ban for non-Muslims (BBC)
After more than 30 years of Islamist rule, Sudan has outlined wide-reaching reforms including allowing non-Muslims to drink alcohol, and scrapping the apostasy law and public flogging.
“We [will] drop all the laws violating the human rights in Sudan,” Justice Minister Nasredeen Abdulbari said.
A raft of new laws were passed last week but this is the first public explanation of their contents.
Sudan has also banned female genital mutilation (FGM). Read more
Coronavirus: 3 generations of Bollywood Bachchan family infected (BBC)
Three generations of a high-profile Bollywood family have tested positive for Covid-19, officials in the Indian state of Maharashtra say.
Results on Sunday showed the actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, a former Miss World, and her daughter Aaradhya, eight, were infected with coronavirus.
Her husband Abhishek and father-in-law Amitabh, both also actors, were taken to hospital on Saturday with the virus.
Both men were said to have mild symptoms.
Abhishek Bachchan tweeted that they would remain in hospital “till the doctors decide otherwise”. Read more
Mueller defends Russia probe, says Roger Stone ‘remains a felon’ (Aljazeera)
Donald Trump may have commuted Roger Stone’s prison sentence but the US president’s longtime ally remains a convicted criminal, former special counsel Robert Mueller has said.
Stone, 67, had been set to begin serving a 40-month prison term on Tuesday after his conviction on seven felony charges originally brought by Mueller as part of the Russia collusion probe.
The charges include tampering with a witness and obstructing the House investigation into whether the Trump campaign conspired with Russia to help him win the 2016 election. Read more
Hagia Sophia: Pope ‘pained’ as Istanbul museum reverts to mosque (BBC)
Pope Francis has said he’s “pained” by Turkey’s decision to convert Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia back into a mosque.
Speaking at a service in the Vatican, the Roman Catholic leader added that his “thoughts go to Istanbul”.
Hagia Sophia was built as a Christian cathedral nearly 1,500 years ago and turned into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of 1453.
The Unesco World Heritage Site became a museum in 1934 under Turkish Republic founding father Ataturk. Read more

Ghana’s COVID-19 cases surpass 24,000 (Guardian)
Ghana’s COVID-19 cases have increased to 24,248, with 414 more infections confirmed late Saturday, according to the latest update from the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
The update said the health authorities had treated and discharged 619 more people, bringing the number of recovered cases to 19,831, while the number of deaths stood at 135.
The Saturday night update also put the number of active COVID-19 cases in the West African country at 4,282, as President Nana Akufo-Addo spent his eighth day in self-isolation after a close associate of his tested positive for the pandemic. Read more
