COVID-19 third wave: Sanwo-Olu says 135 died in Lagos, not 500 (Guardian)

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, disclosed that 135 persons have died in Lagos from COVID-19 during the third wave, and not 500 as being speculated.

Sanwo-Olu, who provided the COVID-19 update, said about 1000 passengers from the red zones, with high delta variant cases, have absconded.

“From the start, Lagos State has been the epicenter of the disease in Nigeria, and that remains the case in this third wave. The test positivity rate, which measures how many tests are returning positive, out of every 100 tests conducted, currently stands at 12.1%; compared to 1.1% at the end of June 2021, and 7% at end of July 2021,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“We have identified that the third wave emerged on account of non-adherence to the laid-down health protocols designed to

mitigate this pandemic. For this reason, it is essential for me to, once again, remind all of us of the huge responsibility we have to contribute to fighting and defeating this virus. Read more

Nigerian student emerges world’s brightest (Vanguard)

The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth has honoured Fareedah Oyolola, a secondary school student at Greensprings School, Lagos, as one of the brightest students in the world.

This recognition is a result of her exceptional performance in the advanced School and College Ability Test (SCAT), which every student must undergo in order for the institution to determine their current academic abilities before admitting them into its talent search programme.

Sharing her experience about the test, Fareedah said: “The test was a multiple-choice aptitude test in verbal and quantitative reasoning, and I had to answer 100 questions within 44 minutes! At the end of the test, my score was in the 92nd percentile for verbal reasoning and 87th percentile for quantitative reasoning.

There’s no way I would have gotten these high scores with such a limited time window if not for the great work put in by my teachers, towards developing my comprehension abilities and mathematical reasoning skills. I am very grateful to them.” Read more

Andrew Cuomo is nearing the end of his decade as New York’s governor Monday, as he prepares to relinquish his grip on government to Lt.-Gov. Kathy Hochul in a midnight power transfer that will break another glass ceiling for women in state politics.

Cuomo, a Democrat, is set to end his term at 11:59 p.m., just under two weeks after he announced he would resign rather than face a likely impeachment battle over sexual harassment allegations.

Hochul is scheduled to be sworn in as New York’s first female governor just after midnight in a brief, private ceremony overseen by the state’s chief judge, Janet DiFiore.

“Pass Over” brilliantly heralds the return of the Broadway play (DailyBeast)

The standing ovation, the whooping and cheering happened before a word was spoken.

Pass Over opened on the night of August 22 (until Oct 10 at the August Wilson Theatre), the first release on a pent-up Broadway itching to make up for a lost year.

Here we all were in what looked like a full house, and it felt momentous and strange. It had been so long, and it was so good to be back, but the pandemic is ongoing. Whether theatre can fully return in the social and scientific hinterland we find ourselves is still an open question, and one that will be tested by theater makers and appreciators in real time in the coming months.

If you are ready to return to Broadway, then it’s pretty much the same as before, except: be ready to show proof of vaccination, proof of identity, and then your tickets. Be ready to wear a mask for the duration of the performance, for now at least. Once inside, there is no social distancing. You are sitting in your seats as close to your neighbor as you were before, just masked. Read more
