The ruling political party in Lagos State, All Progressive Congress (APC) is currently engulfed in crisis due wrangling among stakeholders within the party over leadership in Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The crisis which has been brewing in different LGA of the state, on Monday snowball to attack on the party’s chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi , at party’s secretatriat, in Acme, Ogba, Ikeja.

According to a viral video trending online, the party’s chairman, Ojelabi was attacked by aggrieved party members from Alimosho Local Government , who stormed the party’s secretatriat to express their displeasure on how Ojelabi is managing the crisis in their local government. Read more 

NCDC declares cholera crisis, sets up emergency measures (Vanguard)

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, yesterday activated a national cholera emergency centre, following the outbreak of the disease in the country.

It also said 53 deaths and 1,528 suspected cholera cases were recorded across 31 states and 107 local government areas, with a case fatality rate of 3.5 per cent since the beginning of 2024.

This is even as Lagos State government yesterday disclosed that the cholera death toll had risen to 29 from the previously reported 24 last week, adding that the total number of suspected cases had risen to 579. Read more 

Retired General’s ‘‘killers’’ paraded in Abuja (DailyTrust)

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command, on Monday, paraded killers of General Uwem Udukwere (rtd) in Abuja.

Daily trust had reported that the retired army general was killed by suspected armed robbers who invaded his private residence at Sunshine Estate, Abuja, in the wee hours of Saturday.

The police commissioner in the FCT, CP Benneth Igweh, while parading the suspects at the command in Abuja, said two among the robbers who are now at large escaped with the deceased’s pistol. Read more 

JAMB sets July 18 for 2024/2025 admission cut-off marks (NewTelegraph)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has fixed Friday, July 18, 2024, for the Policy Meeting on Admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria, where the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman is expected to set minimum cut-off marks for 2024/2025 admission cycle.

This was disclosed in JAMB’s weekly bulletin made available to journalists on Monday by its spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin.

The policy meeting on admissions sets the tone for any academic year’s admission exercise, and formulation of admission guidelines. It also presents application statistics, candidates’ performance evaluations, and setting the acceptable minimum admission standards for all tertiary institutions across Nigeria for the given year. Tinubu names ex-Lagos commissioner Olatunji Bello head of consumer protection commission (Punch)

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Olatunji Bello as the new Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice-Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, subject to Senate confirmation.

This was contained in a statement signed by the President’s special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, on Monday.

Lagos terminal recycles discarded tyres (Nation)

APM Terminals Apapa has begun the recycling of its discarded tyres into flipflops. The terminal stated this yesterday.

The terminal had recently celebrated Go Green, global APM Terminals Awareness campaign which aims to beam light on sustainable business practices with regards to the environment and how to minimize the impact of its operations on the environment. The campaign had the theme, “Nothing Goes to Waste.”

IWM Magdalene Adegoke, Inner Wheel District 911 Chairman has called on the government at the various levels and well to do individuals in the country to partner with the non government organisation, so as to reach out and give support to more Nigerians in need.

Hajj: Grumbling over delay in payment of airlines as operators threaten service withdrawal (DailyTrust)

There is grumbling among airlines participating in the 2024 Hajj following the delay in payment of air fare by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) as contained in the contract signed with them, Daily Trust can report.

The development is threatening the return airlift of pilgrims after the completion of the 2024 Hajj exercise, it was learnt.

Daily Trust reports that there are no fewer than three airlines hired by NAHCON to convey pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for the 2024 Hajj.

They are Max Air, Air Peace and FlyNas. Read more

Lithium battery plant fire in South Korea kills at least 22 (AlJazeera)

A fire at a lithium battery plant in South Korea has killed at least 22 people and injured eight.

South Korean authorities said on Monday that they had recovered 22 bodies from the factory in Hwaseong, 45km (28 miles) south of Seoul, after earlier confirming that at least 16 workers had died in the blaze and three others were injured.

Eighteen Chinese workers and one Laotian were among the dead. The nationality of the remaining deceased worker was not yet confirmed, fire official Kim Jin-young said, citing information from company officials. Read more

Wikileaks: Julian Assange freed in US plea deal (BBC)

After a years-long legal saga, Wikileaks says that founder Julian Assange has left the UK after reaching a deal with US authorities that will see him plead guilty to criminal charges and go free.

Assange, 52, was charged with conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defence information.

For years, the US has argued that the Wikileaks files – which disclosed information about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars – endangered lives. Read more 

British woman ‘gang-raped after attending festival’ in Paris (Metro)

A British woman has allegedly been raped while attending a festival in Paris.

The unnamed victim was found crying and holding her underwear in the Chatelet-Les Halles district in the centre of the French capital.

She said that she had been to Fete de la Musique (Music Festival) where she had been gang-raped by several men and robbed of her mobile phone. Read more

A female prison officer had sex with criminals including depraved serial killer Levi Bellfield, according to a new book.

The warden at HMP Wakefield, dubbed the ‘Monster Mansion’ jail as it holds some of the most dangerous criminals in the country, is accused of sleeping with several inmates.

Nearly two thirds are in the high security prison for committing sex offences, including John Warboys and paedophile former Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins. Read more

Blinken warns Israel against wider war (VOA)

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday warned Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant against allowing the conflict with Hamas in Gaza to expand to include Lebanon and Hezbollah.

Blinken “underscored the importance of avoiding further escalation of the conflict and reaching a diplomatic resolution that allows both Israeli and Lebanese families to return to their homes,” according to a statement from State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.

Blinken also pressed Gallant to take more steps to protect aid workers in Gaza. Read more

Napoli lower Osimhen asking price to £85m (Punch)

According to Calcio Mercato, Napoli still haven’t received any offers for Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen, and are now willing to listen to proposals in the region of around £85m instead of the initial £100m release clause as they look to cash in on the striker this summer.

Other reports in Italy state that the Serie A side would agree to a player-swap deal with Manchester United, which will see Mason Greenwood join the former Serie A champions, with Osimhen heading in the opposite direction.

Manchester United are keen to sell Greenwood in the summer, even though the rape charges against him were dropped last year. The 22-year-old winger did well on a loan at Spanish La Liga side Getafe, winning the club’s Player of The Season award, and has been linked with several clubs, including Juventus, Lazio, and Napoli. Noah Lyles clocked a personal-best-tying 9.83 seconds in the 100-meter race, punching his ticket to Paris through the Olympic trials in Eugene, Ore., and launching his quest for four gold medals.

Lyles finished just ahead of second-place Kenny Bednarek (9.87) and Fred Kerley (9.88), who also qualified Sunday on the track at Hayward Field. More than a half-dozen other athletes qualified through the third day of the trials, which will be held through Sunday.

The organisers of Wimbledon have said that they will not follow the French Open in banning the consumption of alcohol in the stands at this year’s Championships.

The grand slam at Roland Garros was plagued by poor behaviour from spectators, prompting officials in Paris to bring in a booze ban.

Belgium’s David Goffin had chewing gum spat at him by one fan early in the tournament, while Iga Swiatek criticised the behaviour of sections of the crowd in her on-court interview after beating Naomi Osaka en route to her eventual triumph. Read more
