Crocodiles, snakes, other zoo animals escape, inmates flee as floods ravage Maiduguri

Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, Nigeria, is facing a crisis of epic proportions as severe flooding has led to the escape of dangerous animals from a local zoo and a mass prison break.

Our sources report that the Sanda Kyarimi Zoo has been breached by floodwaters, allowing several animals, including crocodiles and an ostrich, to escape into the surrounding areas. Ayuba Peter, Director of Forest and Wildlife, reportedly confirmed the incident, stating that roads have been blocked and wildlife staff are patrolling to recapture the escaped animals. There are growing concerns about the potential escape of more dangerous animals such as lions and elephants.

In a related incident, the flooding has caused a section of the Maiduguri New Prison wall to collapse, resulting in the escape of over 200 inmates. An anonymous official has revealed that some of the escapees include high-profile Boko Haram commanders, raising significant security concerns in the region.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed additional resources for search and rescue operations. NEMA Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has activated the deployment of extra personnel and facilities to aid residents trapped by the flood. The agency is also working to prevent potential waterborne epidemics by providing clean water to displaced residents in temporary shelters.

Vice President Kashim Shettima led a high-powered federal government delegation to assess the situation and has pledged support for affected individuals and communities.

As the city grapples with these multiple crises, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any sightings of escaped animals or inmates. The manhunt for the escaped prisoners is ongoing, with law enforcement agencies mobilising additional resources.

Recall that the convicted Senior Pastor of the Christian Praying Assembly, Lagos, Reverend Chukwuemeka Ezeugo aka Reverend King, is an inmate in a Maiduguri prison and unascertained reports say his whereabouts is not known.
