Court fixes date for final addresses in case of Dane who allegedly killed wife, daughter (Channels)
The Lagos High Court sitting at Tafa Balewa Square has fixed March 1 for the adoption of final written addresses by lawyers in the trial of a Danish businessman, Peter Nielsen, accused of killing his Nigerian wife and daughter.
Justice Bolanle Okikiolu-Ighile, fixed the date after the defence counsel, Mrs Dolapo Oyewale, closed their case.
The Lagos state government had arraigned Nielsen before the court on a two-count charge of murder contrary to Section 223 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2015.
The state had alleged that the defendant aged 53 killed his Nigerian musician wife, Zainab also known as Alizee and his daughter on April 5, 2018 at about 3.45am at their Banana Island Residence in the Ikoyi area of Lagos.Read more
Late Sylvester complained of side pain, says Dowen doctor (Punch)
A medical doctor working with Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, Dr Mojisola Bisiriyu, on Tuesday, narrated to a coroner inquest how she treated 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni (Junior), a pupil of the school who died in controversial circumstances.
The news of Sylvester’s death went viral following a social media post by his cousin, Perry Oromoni, who alleged that some senior pupils of the college beat him up in his hostel because he refused to join a cult.
But the school denied the claim, saying the boy complained of leg pain following an injury he sustained while playing football.
A coroner inquest was set up to look into the circumstances surrounding the death. Read more
Cult rivalry claims 5 lives in Lagos (NewTelegraph)
Taiwo Jimoh Some suspected Aiye cult members have reportedly killed five members of Eiye at Maidan Orile, Mile 12 area of Lagos State.
The clash that led to the death of the five cult group members started on Saturday and escalated to Monday morning when stray bullets flying around from the groups hit a Hausa man who later died at the hospital where he was rushed to for treatment.
It was learnt that four members of Aiye were killed on Sunday night, while one person was also shot dead at mile 12 under bridge on Monday causing panic and confusion in the area. Some of the victims killed were identified as Wale, Eleshin, Dada, while Ologundudu was killed under Mile 12 bridge in the early hours of Monday.
A resident, who simply gave his name as Kunle, said it was terrible The missing children and the house scene seeing corpses with bullet wounds on their bodies everywhere in the community. He said everybody had gone to bed when suddenly they heard gunshots from everywhere in the community which lasted for hours. Read more
9 Ghanaians allegedly smuggle Indian hemp worth N200m into Nigeria — NSCDC (Vanguard)
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command, on Monday, paraded nine Ghanaians for allegedly smuggling about 201 bags of Indian hemp (cannabis sativa) valued at N200m into the country.
They were Victor Musa, Freeman Gasie, Adotete Joseph, Moses Sottie, Christian Tette, Kabu Okonipa, Stephen Sottie, Daniel Toyokpti and Kabu Natte all fishermen and Ghanaians.
Parading the suspects at the Command’s headquarters in Ikeja, the state commandant, Edenabu Okoro Eweka, said the suspects were arrested through the support of the Nigerian Navy.
He explained that the intelligence driven operation was done by the marine unit of NSCDC having monitored their activities. Read more
