Cultists kill police Inspector in Lagos (Vanguard)

Rampaging cultists in the Ijanikin community and its environs have killed a 38-year-old police Inspector attached to Zone 2, Police Command, Onikan Lagos.

The deceased officer identified as Sunday Apochi was murdered, over the weekend, at about 8 pm by the notorious Eiye confraternity members in front of police quarters, Alasia, Ijanikin, Lagos.

It was learned that the deceased officer, a father of three, who hails from Otukpo Local Government in Benue state, enlisted into the Nigerian Police Force in 2004. Read more

Alleged terrorism: Court to rule in Lagos Eze Ndigbo’s bail application (Vanguard) 

A High Court in Lagos State on Tuesday fixed Friday for ruling in a bail application filed by the “Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate”, Frederick Nwajagu.

Nwajagu, had on Tuesday prayed the court to admit him to bail on liberal terms.

The defendant is charged with terrorism offences and also told the court that he was not a flight risk.

Justice Yetunde Adesanya fixed the date after listening to arguments from both counsels. Read more 

Apapa Customs uncover pistols concealed in cargo (Punch)

The Apapa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service said it seized two pistols hidden inside a container and other contraband worth N506bn in the last six months.

In a statement on Tuesday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Usman, said the command recorded 16 seizures with a duty paid value of N1.4bn within the period.

He said the seizures made included prohibited drugs, used tyres, rice, vegetable oil, and sundry items. Read more

Lagos Okada riders accuse policemen of extortion (Punch)

Some commercial motorcyclists have accused men of the Lagos State Police Command of extortion.

They also claimed that the policemen attached to the Afonka Police Station, Shasha and Moshalashi Police Station along Ayobo Road in the Alimosho Local Government Area of the state were also fond of impounding their motorcycles despite not plying the routes prohibited by the state government.

One of the Okada riders, Ibrahim Anwalu, who operates around Tastee Chicken at Oke Street and Pako along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway Junction, told our correspondent that he had been extorted many times when he did not operate on the main road. Read more

Lagos court remands dismissed cop linked to missing baby (Punch)

A dismissed policeman, Samuel Ukpabio, has been remanded following his arraignment in court by the Lagos State Police Command for his involvement in the disappearance of a newborn, Joseph, at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, in the Yaba area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the development to our correspondent on Monday, said Ukpabio was arraigned in court last week.

“He (Ukpabio) was charged to court last Monday, remanded in prison and couldn’t meet the bail conditions. The case was adjourned till October 4,” Hundeyin said. Read more

Woman attempts stealing baby from Lagos hospital (Punch)

A woman, Modinat Faniyi, was on Monday arraigned before the Yaba Magistrates’ Court for allegedly attempting to steal a newborn baby in a Muslim hospital in the Ijaiye, Ojokoro area of Lagos State.

The 49-year-old was arraigned by the Lagos State Police Command on one count of attempted theft.

The prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the defendant entered the Ahmadiya Muslim Hospital at Ijaiye, Ojokoro, on June 22, 2023, and attempted to abscond with a newborn baby when the mother was asleep. Read more

Widow, brother of slain Lagos chief demand justice (Punch)

Family members of the Baale of Lootu community, Chief Fatai Jubril, who was murdered in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State on July 15 over a land dispute, have demanded justice for their slain loved one.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident in an interview with PUNCH Metro last Tuesday and said the police had launched a manhunt for the suspected killers.

But during our correspondent’s visit to the community on Saturday, family members and residents narrated how the killing was carried out and demanded justice.

NDLEA seizes N3.7b tramadol at Lagos airport (Punch)

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have thwarted plans to smuggle over five million pills of Tramadol said to be worth N3.7bn into the country.

The agency’s Director, Media, and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Sunday.

Babafemi said the feat was achieved through the collaboration of men of the Nigeria Customs Service and others working at the airport’s DHL cargo warehouse. Read more

Lagos: Police arrest 5 of 7-man robbery gang (Punch)

Five members of a seven-man gang said to be notorious for robbing some Lagos residents of their valuables, were on Sunday arrested by the Isashi Police Anti-Crime team.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the syndicate was in three cars and were robbing residents of the Ayajo Okemoro area, off Ogundipe road, at the Isashi Mine area of the state when they were arrested.

The suspects, Tosin Emmanuel, 23, Emmanuel Raphel 20, Precious Ikechukwu, 20, Uchenna Thomas 17, and Godspower Samuel 19, were arrested around 5.15 am. Read more

Bizman in court for swindling lover’s friends (Punch)

A 47-year-old man, Taiwo Oluyemi, was on Friday arraigned in an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for allegedly obtaining the sum of N410,000 from two females to process travel documents for them.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Oluyemi was charged with obtaining under false pretences and stealing.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Bassey, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on May 11 AnuOluwapo Street, Alapere, Lagos. Read more

Security guards arraigned for stealing, vandalism (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command, on Thursday, arraigned two security guards, Edward Yusuf and Michael Dimda, before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ajah for allegedly destroying a Sport Utility Vehicle and stealing N2m.

Yusuf and Dimda are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy, vandalism, and stealing preferred against them.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Chinedu Njoku, told the court that the defendants conspired with others who are still at large to commit the offences. Read more

Man attempting to steal underground cable shot at Lagos Airport (DailyTrust)

Suspected thieves were caught attempting to steal underground armoured cable serving the Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, on Friday.

The suspects were sighted around the airport perimeter fence area by the Nigeria Airforce guards on duty as they dug the underground cable belonging to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).But they reportedly took to their heels on sighting the NAF guards while one of them was shot in the arms before he was arrested.
