Commission seals 10 clubs, religious centres in Lagos over non-compliance of COVID-19 protocols (Vanguard)
The Lagos State Safety Commission has sealed over 10 social and religious centres over non-compliance with the directive on social distancing and ban on the social and religious gathering.
The enforcement team, led by the Director-General of the commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, disclosed that the commission sealed the Harvest Lagos, Bay Lounge, The Heavens Suites, Angle Villa Bar, Ehi Guest House and Gardens Egbeda, Mountain Top Hotels and Suites Ojodu.
The Technical Adviser to the Commission, Mr Seun Awojobi, explained that while carrying out the enforcement on Friday night, the team was allegedly attacked and shot at Osigold Hotels and Bar in Baruwa Ipaja, Lagos.
He said the hotel had over 100 people clubbing and dancing within its premises, flouting the state government’s directive and contravening the Infectious Disease Law of the state. Read more
Command detains Lagos inspector for service pistol abuse (Punch)
A policeman, Inspector Yemi Ojumoola, accused of harassing members of the public with his service pistol, has been arrested.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, told PUNCH Metro on Tuesday that the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, ordered that the inspector should face an orderly room trial, where his fate would be decided.
Ojumoola was caught on video engaging a motorist in an argument over traffic issues in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The motorist’s wife, however, challenged Ojumoola for bringing out his gun, wondering if he wanted to shoot her husband. Read more
Court remands two men for allegedly stealing 15 crates of eggs (Vanguard)
A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday ordered that two men who allegedly stole 15 crates of eggs, be remanded in a correctional facility for 30 days, pending legal advice.
The police charged Lucky Sunday, 27, a driver and Lukeman Ogunleye, 23, a furniture maker with two counts of conspiracy and robbery
The plea of the two defendants were however not taken by the court because of the nature of the offence.
Chief Magistrate A.O. Adedayo ordered that Sunday and Ogunleye be remanded in Ikoyi Custodial Centre for 30 days. Read more
‘My schoolmate introduced me to robbery’ (DailyTrust)
A 24-year-old armed robbery suspect, John Zion, has told the police that a former secondary school mate introduced him to crime in return for shelter and food that he offered him.
The police told our correspondent yesterday that Zion said during investigation that he became homeless when his father kicked him out of the house, allegedly acting on the instruction of his stepmother.
The suspect, who the police arrested along with two others for allegedly attacking residents of Awoyaya in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, was said to have confessed in his statement saying, “I began sleeping in markets and mechanic workshops as a result of my father’s action. I met a lot of under-aged children there, some of who had run away from home, like me, and had nowhere to go.
“I got to know what hunger really is while living on the streets. It was during this period that I met Ola. We were mates in secondary school. He dropped out of school in JSS 3. He took me to a wooden house by the beach side at Ibeju-Lekki”. Read more
COVID-19 violations: Again, Lagos shuts Farms City, Quilox, other entertainment facilities in Lekki (Vanguard)
For the second time since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in the state, the Lagos State Government through, the state Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA had again sealed Farms City on Admiralty Way Lekki and Ajah Quilox Pool and Bar in Ajah area of the state.
The facilities were said to have been sealed off for contravening various sections of the extant law and also constituting a setback to combative efforts to flatten the curve of the COVID-19 in the state.
The enforcement exercise was carried out in the middle of the night at the weekend, along the Lekki-Ajah axis of the state. Two other entertainment and restaurant outlets namely: Page One in Ajah and Bien Mange in Abraham Adesanya Estate were also sealed.
While Farm City, was sealed for operating a Beer Parlor and encouraging large gathering against social distancing protocol, the latter facility located at 9B Dan Suleiman crescent, Abraham Adesanya was sealed off for illegally converting a residential building for commercial purposes and operating in an unfriendly environment whereby constituting environmental nuisance to other residents of the area. Court fixes Sept 22 for maid’s trial over attempted murder (DailyTrust)
A Lagos High Court, Ikeja, has fixed the trial of an 18-year-old housemaid, Miss Susan Samson, who allegedly attempted to murder her employer, for September 22, 2020. The court adjourned the case on Friday due to the absence of the lawyer to the accused person, who is facing a three-count criminal charge of attempted murder, stealing and grievous bodily harm. Samson was alleged to have committed the offence at about 18.30 hours on or about March 5, 2018 at No. 249B, Royal Avenue, Ejigbo, Lagos. She was alleged to have stolen bottles of wine, biscuits, chewing gum, milk, Milo and other items, all valued at N250,000, belonging to Mrs Mistura Ogundipe, her employer. Read more
5 persons arrested over attack on traders, workers (DailyTrust)
The police in Lagos said yesterday they have arrested five members of an armed robbery gang for allegedly attacking some traders and workers along the Itire road, Isolo.
The police identified four of the arrested suspects as Segun Oladokun, 18; Oluwasegun Ajaoyin, 28; Nathaniel, 22; and Sunday Achadu, 30. Phones, cash, laptops and wristwatches, which they allegedly stole from their victims at gunpoint, were said to have been found on them.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, told our correspondent yesterday on phone that the suspects ambushed the traders and some factory workers on Itire road on Friday. Read more
Police nab leader of terror gang in Satellite Town (Guardian)
After several months of manhunt, detectives in Lagos State, at the weekend, arrested the suspected leader of a dreaded criminal gang terrorising Satellite Town and environs after they launched a fresh attack on some residents in the area.
The residents had resisted being extorted, but many were left wounded and properties destroyed before the suspect’s waterloo. According to reports, two persons were feared killed during the crisis that erupted on Saturday morning and their bodies were taken away to an unknown place.
Trouble started after members of the gang stormed a warehouse in Abule-Osun with the intention of extorting money from the owner, but the attempt was resisted, leading to the crisis.
It was gathered that the Commander of FESTAC Police Area Command, ACP Halilu Muawiya, ordered the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Satellite Police Station, CSP Chike Oti, to quell the crisis. Read more
Man defiles 11-yr-old girl in Church, widower assaults 14-yr-old inside bathroom (Vanguard)
While Maurice Peters, 33, was arrested for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old girl inside a Church located at Tijani Qudus Street, Ijegun, a widower, aged 55, assaulted a 14-year-old girl in a bathroom at Ejigbo, both in Lagos State.
The 55-year-old father of three, identified as Emeka Okwuome, was caught inside the bathroom, while he was assaulting the primary six pupil.
Vanguard gathered that the 14-year-old victim lost her mother and was brought from her home town to live with a relative at 22, Oladuni Street.
She had gone to take her bath on Friday, when the suspect, a trader at Ladipo Market, knocked on the bathroom door and ordered the girl to open for him. Read more
Man dies after crashing into Hitech barrier on Lagos airport road (Guardian)
An unidentified middle-aged man died on Thursday night after crashing into a barrier placed on the right side of the Oshodi-Airport Road, Lagos, at 7 & 8 Bus Stop, by Hitech Construction Company, the firm which handled the Airport Road rehabilitation and expansion commissioned last year by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The man, driving a black Toyota Corolla, was on high speed when he sighted the diversion and in a last-minute effort to avoid ramming the vehicle into the barrier, it skidded and somersaulted several times.
An eyewitness, who was driving behind the car, Abiodun Alabi, said: “I am still in shock. It was like a horror movie. Who would have thought that a new curb would be placed in the middle of the road by the construction company without a warning sign few metres away or an amber light to alert motorists of the obstruction. 32-year-old man commits suicide in Lagos (Punch)
A 32-year-old man identified as Aboh Ogbeche, on Friday, committed suicide at his family residence in Lawanson, Surulere area of Lagos State.
Aboh was said to have drank bleach, even as sources stated that there was nothing to indicate that he was planning to commit suicide.
It was gathered that the victim poured the liquid in a cup, sat before his mother, gulped the substance and immediately began to convulse.
A close friend of the deceased said the mother, who was shocked by the incident, raised the alarm and Aboh was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Read more
SS 3 pupil commits suicide after alleged assault by half-brother (Punch)
When the next West African Senior School Certificate Examination eventually begins, Sherifat Sulaimon, will be missing in action.
The 21-year-old SS3 pupil reportedly committed suicide last Sunday after she was allegedly beaten by her stepbrother, Moliku Sulaimon, whom she lived with at Olorunshogo Iyewa, in the Isawo area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
Neighbours, who spoke to Sunday PUNCH, accused Moliku of serially assaulting Sherifat, noting that she became frustrated and took Sniper after he repeated the act last Sunday morning.
It was learnt that Sherifat and her two siblings started living with Moliku after their mother left the family, following their father’s death. Moliku, the eldest child in the family, is in his 40s. Read more
Woman allegedly commits suicide after fighting with husband (Punch)
A 28-year-old woman, Mrs Clara Vincent, has allegedly committed suicide by drinking sniper after quarrelling with her husband,
City Round learnt that the deceased, who lived on Ebewi Street at Agodo area of Lagos State with her husband, was rushed to the General Hospital, Isolo, Lagos where she was confirmed dead.
Her cousin, Mr Lawrence John, who reported the case to the police, said the family suspected foul play, alleging that the husband had a hand in her death.
He said, “My cousin, Clara, was said to have taken her own life after drinking sniper. She was rushed to the General hospital, at Isolo, where she died. Read more
