British Prime Minister, Theresa May, arrived at the FMDQ Security Exchange building, Victoria Island, Lagos, for a meeting with the Nigerian business community. The prime minister, accompanied by members of her trade delegation, arrived the venue at 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday. Lagos State retains highest foreign debt profile (Guardian)
Lagos yesterday retained its position as the state with the highest foreign debt in the country, with a liability put at $1.45 billion as at June 30, 2018. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted a Debt Management Office (DMO) document titled: ‘States, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Federal Governments’ External Debt Stock as at June 30, 2018,’ as also detailing other states’ external debts in Abuja. Lagos DPO extortion probe: Witnesses deny arrest in mosque (Vanguard)
Investigation into allegations of extortion and illegal arrest against the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in-charge of Pen Cinema, Lagos, Harrison Nwabuisi, has taken a new twist as key witnesses have denied being arrested inside a mosque while praying. Merit, taken objectively, is ‘something earned, something owed to a person. Taken subjectively, merit is the right of a person to his earning and is of two types- condign and congruous merits. While condign merit deals with strict justice to a reward, congruous merit is not so much a right as a claim but rests upon what is suitable or fitting in a situation’. With this words of Paul Glenn in mind, each time I am asked my opinion on the nation’s media industry in relation to free speech/freedom of expression, I usually pause to honestly look at its virtues and attributes both objectively and subjectively, and in all, one thing often stands out; the Nigerian media industry in the writer’s views neither merits nor deserves the inequitable treatments so far mated to it by the successive administrations. Ex-speaker warns Nigerian youths against migration (Guardian)
Former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Mr Bassey Essien has warned against youth migration in the country.Bassey who gave the warning while delivering a paper, “A step in the right direction” at the graduation ceremony of Mobil Pegasus School, Eket, Akwa Ibom State said “by the year 2050, about 800,000,000 youths all over the world will be migrating to Africa” because of its enormous potentials hence unnecessary for Nigerians to go and die for nothing. No plan to reduce JAMB UTME form fee, says registrar (Guardian)
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said that there is no plan to review downward the fee of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) form from the current N7,500. JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, who disclosed this in an interview yesterday in Abuja, said the UTME registration fee is one of the cheapest in the world. Oloyede, who stated that remittances were made possible by the prudent management of resources by the board, said: “We charge the least. Why are they not asking WAEC, NECO and other examination bodies to reduce their fees?” Read more

Reaction as Daura says siege to NASS, collective decision (Vanguard)
The last has not been heard of the sacked Director-General of the Department of State Services, DSS, Lawal Daura, as it was learned, yesterday, that the deployment of DSS operatives to lay siege to the National Assembly, recently, which led to Daura’s removal, was a collective one. A close associate of the spymaster, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Daura was neither given a query over any issue nor indicted on his handling of affairs of the service until his sack. Dankwambo blames FG over alleged comatose economy, declining GDP (Guardian)
A presidential aspirant in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, has blamed the Federal Government for a ‘comatose’ economy. Dankwanbo, who is the Governor of Gombe State, lamented the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to improve Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He cited the second quarter report of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which it reported to have dropped from 1.95 per cent to 1.5 per cent in the first quarter of the year. Read more
