Dangote pledges N1.5b for Maiduguri flood relief

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest man and chairman of Dangote Group, has announced a substantial N1.5 billion donation to support flood victims in Maiduguri, Borno State. The gesture comes as a beacon of hope for thousands displaced by recent devastating floods that have ravaged the region.

During a high-profile visit to Maiduguri, Dangote unveiled his two-pronged approach to aid: N1 billion will be channelled through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for immediate disaster response, while N500 million will go directly to the Borno State government for local recovery initiatives.

“Rebuilding after such a catastrophe requires a concerted effort from all of us,” Dangote stated, calling for increased private sector involvement in the relief efforts. His impassioned plea underscores the magnitude of the disaster, which has overwhelmed government resources and left countless families without homes or livelihoods.

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State expressed profound gratitude for the timely intervention, emphasising the critical role these funds will play in restoring normalcy to affected communities. The donation is expected to address urgent needs such as shelter, food, and medical assistance, while also supporting long-term recovery plans.

This act of generosity aligns with the Dangote Foundation’s track record of responding to national crises and supporting vulnerable populations. As floodwaters recede and the full extent of the damage becomes apparent, Dangote’s contribution sets a precedent for other corporate leaders to follow suit.

The visit, which included Nasarawa State Governor Engr Abdullahi Sule, highlighted the collaborative approach needed to tackle the ongoing challenges in Borno State.
