Again, hoodlums attack Lagos firemen (Punch)

Officials of the Lagos State and Rescue Service have been attacked by suspected hoodlums at the Agege area of Lagos State.

Three firemen were injured, according to a statement by the acting head of the agency, Mrs Margaret Adeseye, on Monday.

The statement was titled ‘hoodlums attack Lagos firemen, destroy fire engine’.

Adeseye explained that a fire engine belonging to the Agency damaged by hoodlums, who attacked the officials in the course of duty on Sunday. Read more

Police arraign 4 for allegedly stealing gold, money worth N5.4m (Vanguard)

Four men, who allegedly broke into an apartment and stole valuables worth N5.4 million, were, on Tuesday, arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The defendants, Daniel Odey, 25; Akor John, 21; Chimeh Ifoma, 20 and Chima Okpara, 34, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges of conspiracy, breaking in and stealing preferred against them.

The Prosecutor, ASP Bisi Ogunleye, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Oct. 28 at 05:30 pm at Ikeja GRA.

He said that the defendants broke into the residence of Dr Layeni Adeyemo and stole her gold and money. Read more

#EndSARS: Lagos panel dismisses petition seeking N300m damages against police (Punch)

The Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry probing allegations of human rights abuses against men of the disbanded police Special Anti-Robbery Squad on Tuesday dismissed a petition by one Paschal Bonu, who is seeking to enforce a N300m court judgment against the SARS.

The retired Justice Doris Okuwobi-led panel dismissed Bonu’s petition while ruling on the preliminary objection raised by the police counsel, Joseph Ebosereme, who described the petition as an abuse of court processes.

No sooner than the case was mentioned and the petitioner mounted the witness stand than Ebosereme told the panel that he would be objecting to the hearing of the petition by the panel on the basis that the case was a subject of an appeal, currently pending before the Supreme Court. Read more

Command nabs suspected cultists for attacking vigilante group (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested seven suspected members of the Eiye Confraternity for attacking a vigilante group, the Agbekoya, in the Ikorodu area of the state.

It was gathered that the suspects, Abolaji Arbayo, Josiah Offem, Oluwapelumi Oyeyinka, Lamidi Taofeeq, Ahmed Shittu, Zainab Nurudeen and Rabiu Ganiyu, had on Saturday attacked the vigilante group in a reprisal for the attack on one of their members.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects inflicted machetes cuts and gunshot injuries on members of the group.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Sunday that the suspects were arrested around 2pm on Saturday by policemen from the Imota Division.

He stated, “The suspected cultists arrested are Abolaji Arbayo, Josiah Offem, Oluwapelumi Oyeyinka, Lamidi Taofeeq, Ahmed Shittu (driver of their operational vehicle), Zainab Nurudeen (who sources for guns to operate) and Rabiu Ganiyu. Others, who were in possession of weapons, fled the scene on sighting the police. Read more

Lagos Task Force demolishes 1,700 shanties, containerised shops (Nation)

Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce) over the weekend demolished over 1,700 illegal shanties and containerised shops around Fagba Railway lines, Agege.

Speaking during the demolition exercise, chairman of the Agency, Olayinka Egbeyemi, a Chief Superintendent of Police disclosed that owners/occupants of the illegal shanties and containerised shops had already been served a seven-day ‘Removal Order’ by the government based on series of complaints about criminal activities around Fagba, Agege.

He said after the expiration of the ‘Removal Order’, the government gave them additional 21days to remove their belongings and vacate the entire area before embarking on the demolition exercise.

According to Egbeyemi: “These illegal shanties and containerised shops were occupied by miscreants and hoodlums who terrorised innocent citizens around Fagba, Iju-Ishaga and Pen-Cinema area, dispossessing them of their valuables, especially early in the day and late at night.” Read more

A 23-year-old man who claims to be a victim of Lekki Toll Gate shooting says that the subsequent amputation of his right leg is a nightmare he has been unable to wake up from

Twenty-three-year-old Olalekan Faleye, a survivor of the shooting that attended the peaceful #ENDSARS protest at Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, says he has become an amputee after the gunshot injuries he sustained to the leg on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.

He had undergone surgical amputation of his bullet-ridden right leg.

The shooting incident had attracted national and international outcry, with the Lagos State and Federal governments being urged to unravel the identity of the shooters and who deployed them.

Speaking exclusively with PUNCH HealthWise a few days after he was discharged from the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, Olalekan said until the Lekki shooting, he had temporarily worked as a labourer with a construction company in Ikoyi to raise money for his ‘freedom’ as an apprentice cobbler. Company worker arrested for threatening to kill promoted colleague, children (Punch)

The police have arrested one Peter Okoro, an official of a motorbike assemblage company in Lagos, for allegedly sending a threat message to the Financial Controller of the firm, Mrs Grace Ejeh.

Okoro, who is the union chairman in the company, reportedly asked Ejeh to resign within three weeks or risk being killed together with her two children.

Sunday PUNCH learnt that Okoro sent the threat message on November 7, 2020 – three days after Ejeh was promoted to her new position from Assistant Financial Controller.

In the message, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent, Okoro boasted that he only needed three bullets to ‘finish’ Eje and her “two kids,” but said he didn’t want to spill blood provided she vacated the office within three weeks. Read more

#EndSARS: Police killed my girlfriend, shot me in head, man tells panel (Nation)

A thirty-year-old man, Emmanuel Ajomafuwe, on Friday pleaded with the Lagos State Panel on Restitution for Victims of SARS and Related Abuses to help him get justice  for his girlfriend, Ada Ifeanyi, who, according to him, was shot dead by a policeman.

Another witness, Mrs. Hannah Olugbodi, narrated how her left leg was shattered by a stray bullet fired by officers of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) two years ago, while the widow of a Lagos State Traffic Management (LASTMA) officer, Rotimi Adeyemo, killed by a policemen at Iyana Ipaja two years ago asked for scholarships for her three children up to the university level.

Ajomafuwe told the panel, chaired by Justice Doris Okuwobi, that he was driving with his 20-year-old girlfriend, Ada, around 7am on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Apapa, Lagos when he

was accosted by a team of policemen who claimed that they flagged him down but he refused to stop. Read more
