Decomposing corpse of man found in Lagos bush (Punch)
Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Health have recovered the decomposing remains of a yet-to-be-identified man from a bush in Odogunyan, in the Ikorodu area of the state.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the corpse was discovered when residents of the Oguntade Oloja community in Odogunyan started perceiving a stench emanating from the bamboo bush in the community.
In a bid to ascertain the cause of the odour, the residents were said to have combed the bush and saw the lifeless body of the man on the ground.
A source said efforts to salvage the situation prompted the Chairman, Oguntade Oloja Community Development Association, Gbolahan Kolawole, to report the incident to the police. Read more
Union to Sanwo-Olu: evacuate Lagos indigenes in UNIJOS (Nation)
The National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS) has pleaded Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to evacuate Lagos students from University of Jos (UNIJOS) in Plateau State.
The Nation reports students of the University had raised the alarm over the continued attacks on them by hoodlums, whom they said had killed four students in the last five days.
A statement signed by the union president, Shasanya Akinola and its Public Relation Officer, Hassan Abdulsalm respectively stated that students are helpless in the ongoing mayhem.

COVID-19: Ogun lecturer tackles Lagos over detention, govt threatens prosecution (Punch)
A lecturer at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State, Adesola Adeleke, has accused the Lagos State Government of unfair treatment and illegal detention over the COVID-19 pandemic.
Adeleke, in an interview conducted by AlaroyeTV in Yoruba and posted on Facebook, lamented that the state government subjected her and her baby to hardship despite testing negative for COVID-19 four times.
She said her plight started after she completed a doctorate in South Africa and booked a flight back home.
According to her, when she got to the O.R. Tambo International Airport in South Africa, she was informed that she must pay N481,890 on the Nigeria Immigration Travel Portal before she would be allowed to board.
After reportedly struggling to raise the funds, she was told she had missed her flight. Read more
Confusion trails death of 200-level Unizik student (Guardian)
There is confusion over the death of a male student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) Awka, Anambra State, on Friday. The student, said to be in 200 level, is a native of Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, studying Industrial Physics before his death.
The cause of his death is not immediately known, but there are conflicting reports regarding it, which happened on Friday.
An eyewitness, who spoke in confidence, said the body of the late student was found dangling with rope around his neck inside one of the hostel blocks.
He also said the deceased locked himself inside the room but was later forced open, adding that when the door was broken,
“The corpse was seen dangling with rope around his neck.” Another witness said he never showed any sign of depression before the incident. According to him, the deceased was a quiet and calm student and very jovial.
In his reaction, the Chief Security Officer of the institution, Mr. Ken Chukwura said the deceased’s roommates have been invited for further questioning as investigation had commenced into the incident. Read more
Fuel price remains until FG, labour end negotiations – PPPRA (Punch)
The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency on Sunday said the Petroleum Industry Act had signaled the full deregulation of the downstream oil sector.
It was, however, quick to state that the negotiations between the Federal Government and labour would minimise the effect of subsidy removal upon full deregulation of the sector.
The Executive Secretary, PPPRA, Abdulkadir Saidu, who said this in a statement issued in Abuja, stated that petrol price would be adjusted in a way that it would not cause hardship on consumers.

Gunmen kill 12 persons in fresh Katsina attack (Guardian)
Gunmen, at the weekend, killed 12 persons at Dubu community in Batsari Local Council of Katsina State. The incident, which occurred at about 08:45p.m., saw over 250 bandits invading the settlement with assorted weapons.
The attackers, it was further gathered, looted homes and shops, including stealing foodstuffs and money. Residents claimed that the 20 lives lost, were yesterday morning, buried according to Islamic rites, while the injured are being attended to.
A source said some residents of the affected village had begun relocating to Batsari Town, headquarters of the council, for safety.
A spokesman for the state police command, SP Gambo Isah, confirmed a casualty figure of 12 and injuries to six others. His words: “The bandits, numbering over 300 and armed with sophisticated weapons, including GMP machine guns and anti-aircraft launchers, stormed the village at 20:45p.m on Saturday. Read more

BBNaija Season 4 “Pepper dem” housemates, Khafi Kareem and Gedoni Ekpata, have welcomed their first child.
Khafi revealed this on Instagram live at 8pm on Sunday.
She had posted the message: “Gender Reveal”, asking her followers to guess the gender of their baby.
After the Instagram live, Khafi shared a picture of herself and her new born baby boy with the caption, “Our miracle is here, and He is perfect!!! Thank you to everyone who joined our live gender and baby reveal”- SURPRISEEEEEEEE!”

Sexagenarian hypnotises teenager for alleged rituals in Ondo (Guardian)
A 65-year-old man, Akorede Lawal, suspected to be a ritualist, has been arrested by the Amotekun Corps in Ondo State, for taking 18-year-old boy, Segun Thomas, into captivity for alleged ritual purposes.
The incident happened at the weekend in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of the state, after the victim was hypnotised with charms and brought from Lagos to Ondo State.
Items found in the bag of the suspect included; two daggers, a calabash with black soap, an animal horn, charms, six mobile phones, a diary with telephone numbers and a radio.
The Guardian learnt that Thomas, who lives in Mushin area of Lagos State and undergoing training as an automobile mechanic, left home for the mechanic shop on that fateful day and found himself at Ore in Ondo State. Read more
Storm Henri makes landfall at Rhode Island (BBC)
More than 120,000 US North East homes are without power after Tropical Storm Henri made landfall at Rhode Island.
Although Henri had been downgraded from a Category One hurricane, the storm still brought 60mph (95km/h) winds.
Millions of people across Long Island and southern New England have been told to prepare for coastal surges, flooding and downed trees and power lines.

Lizzo has officially entered the celebrity hygiene habits conversation, revealing that she no longer wears deodorant, just like Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey.
Upon hearing news that the 51-year-old “Dallas Buyers Club” actor gave up deodorant 35 years ago, the “Rumors” singer, 33, shared to her Instagram stories Thursday, “Ok… I’m w him on this one. I stopped using deodorant and I smell BETTER.”
McConaughey has long discussed his choice to ditch deodorant, telling People in 2005 that he hadn’t “worn deodorant in 20 years.”

Tennessee flooding kills at least 22 in wake of record-breaking rain (CBC)
At least 22 people were killed, and rescue crews searched desperately Sunday amid shattered homes and tangled debris for dozens of people still missing after record-breaking rain sent floodwaters surging through Middle Tennessee.
Saturday’s flooding in rural areas took out roads, cellphone towers and telephone lines, leaving families uncertain about whether their loved ones survived the unprecedented deluge. Emergency workers were searching door to door, said Kristi Brown, a co-ordinator for the health and safety supervisor with Humphreys County Schools.
Many of the missing live in the neighbourhoods where the water rose the fastest, Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said. Their names were on a board in the county’s emergency centre and listed on a city department’s Facebook page. Read more
2021 German Film Award nominees announced (DW)
Two film adaptations of German novels lead among this year’s nominees for Germany’s most important film awards. Both movies look back at the country’s history.
On Thursday, the German Film Academy in Berlin released its nominees for the 2021 German Film Awards, the country’s top cinema prize.
Fabian oder der Gang vor die Hunde (Fabian – Going to the Dogs) emerged as the favourite, leading the pack with 10 nominations including best motion picture, best director and best screenplay, among others. Directed by Dominic Graf, the film is an adaptation of a 1931 novel by German author Erich Kästner about Berlin during the Weimar Republic.
Another film based on a book, Schachnovelle (The Royal Game) will also be vying for best motion picture. It received a total of seven nominations. The adaptation of a 1941 Stefan Zweig novella set during the Nazi era is directed by Philipp Stölzl. Read more
Everly Brothers: US rock ‘n’ roll star Don Everly dies aged 84 (BBC)
Don Everly, the surviving member of the rock ‘n’ roll duo The Everly Brothers, has died at the age of 84.
A family spokesperson confirmed Everly’s death to the Los Angeles Times, but did not disclose the cause.
Everly and his brother, Phil, had hits worldwide in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including Bye Bye Love and All I Have To Do Is Dream.
They were known for their close harmonies, and influenced groups like The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel. Read more

The Skims founder posted a pic while driving Saturday that showed her listening to her ex-husband’s new, highly-anticipated (and frequently-delayed) album Donda.
Kardashian appeared to be listening to the record via her iPhone, and the tracks were unnamed, all appearing with the same title “Donda MIX TEST.06_06.” (The iTunes preorder link for the album has it listed at 24 tracks long.)
The Daily Mail reports that Kim’s listening sesh comes after she and West were snapped grabbing lunch in Malibu Thursday at the swanky Nobu Ryokan hotel, next to favourite KarJenner haunt Nobu.
Kardashian, 40, has been supportive of West, 44, during the protracted roll-out for Donda. She’s been coordinating looks with him for the various listening events he’s had for the album, which in early August took the form of a skintight, all-black Balenciaga outfit that may have brought to mind Pulp Fiction for some. Cincinnati Open: Ashleigh Barty and Alexander Zverev claim dominant final wins (BBC)
World number one Ashleigh Barty warmed up for the US Open by clinching the Cincinnati Open with a straight-set win over Jil Teichmann in the final.
Barty, 25, produced a polished performance to beat the 24-year-old Swiss wildcard 6-3 6-1.
The Australian managed eight aces and 28 winners as she cruised to another commanding victory.
Alexander Zverev took the men’s title with an impressive 6-2 6-3 win over Andrey Rublev.

His second debut, against Arsenal on Sunday, turned into a dream afternoon as Lukaku opened the scoring in an “unplayable” performance which the player himself described as “dominant”.
His strike was his first goal for the club, having failed to hit the net in his three years and previous 15 appearances at Stamford Bridge between 2011 and 2014, when he was a peripheral figure and never given a Premier League start.

Dimitri Payet was hit by a bottle and threw it back into the crowd before fans stormed the pitch causing Nice v Marseille to be abandoned.
Marseille’s Payet was struck in the back by a bottle thrown from the home supporters as he went to take a corner.
He launched it back, leading to fans pouring on to the pitch as stewards and players struggled to restrain them.
After a long delay, Nice’s players came out to finish the game – but Marseille’s players refused to.
The game was abandoned as a result. Nice were leading 1-0 through Kasper Dolberg’s first-half goal. Read more

When Leroy Sane was substituted at half-time, he didn’t even emerge from the changing room to take his place on the bench.
In a goalless first half, a lackluster Bayern Munich had failed to break down a defensively solid Cologne and played 45 misplaced passes.
