Professor Emeritus, Uche Azikiwe, the wife of Nigeria’s first president and the premier of the Eastern Region, late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, weekend, cautioned women to quit marriages prone to domestic violence.

The don, who said abusive marriages have claimed many lives in the past, added that it is better to be single rather than die in marriages where the husbands or wives turn one another into punching bags.

Prof. Azikiwe, who spoke from the Zik’s Onuiyi Haven, in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, further said that education has exposed women to their fundamental human rights, insisting that time has passed “when women were seen and not heard.

“In the olden days, women were to be seen and not heard. Most of them didn’t go to school and didn’t know their rights, but with the influx of Christianity and education, most families nowadays insist that their women will go to school.

“When you go to school, you are well informed of your rights and privileges.

“I think with the exposure to education, you can’t tell a woman who is not happy in a marriage to be there. I can’t even tell my daughter suffering domestic violence to continue enduring it for fear of what people will say.

This is because life matters more than marriage. Take the case of Osinachi Nwachukwu for instance, her case is ended, and you won’t hear anything again about that lady; such a wonderful talent wasted because of alleged domestic violence.” (Vanguard)
