Drug addict arrested for stabbing Lagos cleric to death (Punch)

A 30-year-old man identified simply as David, who is said to be under the influence of hard drugs, has allegedly stabbed a cleric, Akeem Ojiwusi, to death around Odekeye close, in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that David was fond of committing different crimes whenever he got intoxicated and his actions usually put him at loggerheads with his neighbours.

On the fateful day the crime was committed, Ojiwusi’s relative, who identified himself simply as Sefiu, said he was at home when the cleric sent him to buy some drugs for his treatment. Read more 

Police arrest 3 suspects for killing bread thief in Bayelsa (ThisDay)

The Bayelsa State Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) yesterday  confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the mob action that led to the death of Mr. Ebimotimi Freeborn, a 32-year-old male, who was allegedly caught stealing bread from a bakery located along Etegwe-Amassoma Road in the Yenagoa metropolis.

In a statement that was issued by the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Asinim Butswat, the suspects, Ms. Preye Mathew, 50 years female; Mr. Theophilus Tiro, 28 years male, and Mr. Famous Precious, 22 years male, were arrested for allegedly taking part in the mob action.

According to sources, the first class graduate of University of Ibadan who hailed from Korokorosei Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area went into petty theft after he lost his father, the bread winner of the family, a few years ago. Read more

How vessel stealing Nigerian crude for 10 years was nabbed (DailyTrust)

Operatives of TANTITA Security Services Limited, the surveillance company of a former Militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, have arrested another major vessel used for stealing Nigerian assets by suspected criminals.

The arrested vessel with the name “MT Tura ll” laden with 150 metric tonnes of stolen crude oil on Escravos sea was intercepted at Ondo state by Tantita security services in the early hours of Saturday and brought down to Oporosa in Gbaramatu, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.

Addressing newsmen at Oporosa, Commander, JTF Operation Delta Safe (OPDS), South – South Rear Admiral Olusegun Feirrira, said, “We were able to arrest the vessel with the credible information from our Partners in progress, which is our private surveillance company that has worked closely in synergy with forces which comprise the operation Delta Safe, which also comprises the Nigerian Armed Forces, Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Customs, Immigration,The Nigeria Navy, the Army, EFCC, NSCDC and a host of other agencies. Senate commences oil subsidy probe (Sun)

The Senate, on Tuesday, commenced probe of oil subsidy and under recovery regime operated by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, 2023 when subsidy was eventually removed .

The upper legislative chamber specifically frowned at the N9.3 trillion spent on the subsidy regime by Buhari from January 2021 to June 2023.

The Senate is also asking for a living wage for workers as a way of cushioning the effects of subsidy removal and as well, seeks for establishment of three functional refineries for local production and distribution of refined oil with a view to bringing down the pump price from N540 per litre to between N300 to N350 per litre. The Lagos State Government, on Tuesday, honoured 753 members of the state public service at the 16th edition of its Long Service Merit Award.

The 753 officials were honoured at an event held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, as part of activities lined up for the 2023 Public Service Week.

The Head of Service, Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola, said the award ceremony was an opportunity for the state government to recognise “public servants who have meritoriously served the state public service with great dedication, commitment and selflessness in the last 30 years.” Read more

UN told Israel turns Palestinian territory into outdoor prison (AlJazeera)

Israel has imprisoned more than 800,000 Palestinians in the occupied territory since 1967, including tens of thousands of children, and of the current 5,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons about 1,100 are being held without charge or trial, an expert has told the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Currently, there are 160 Palestinian children among those being held in Israeli prisons, Francesca Albanese, UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, told the council on Monday.

Albanese, presenting a report on the arbitrary detention of Palestinians, described Israel as treating occupied Palestinian territory as an outdoor prison. Read more 

Kick It Out: Record number of reports prove discrimination still a serious issue (BelfastTelegraph)

Anti-discrimination body Kick It Out received a record number of reports of discriminatory behaviour during the 2022-23 season.

Figures released by the organisation show that 1,007 reports – an increase of 65.1 per cent over the previous season – were made during the campaign from the grassroots and professional games and across social media.

Reports of online abuse rose by 279 per cent with the organisation receiving 207 more reports related to online forums and social media than in the previous 12 months. Read more

Daniel Ricciardo returns to F1 (RNZ)

Australian Daniel Ricciardo will return to a Formula One race seat with AlphaTauri from Hungary next week after replacing Nyck de Vries for the rest of the season, the Red Bull-owned team said.

Ricciardo drove for the team from 2012-13 when they were known as Toro Rosso and then graduated to Red Bull from 2014 to 2018, winning seven races.

He left McLaren last year after being replaced by compatriot Oscar Piastri and was due to spend 2023 on the sidelines as Red Bull reserve while deciding his future intentions. Read more
