DSS silent on official who jumped into Lagoon (Punch)

The Department of State Services has declined comment on the reported suicide of one of its official, Adetutu Adedokun, who jumped into the Lagoon on Thursday.

The Uber driver whose vehicle Adedokun was in, reportedly claimed she was having a conversation with her fiancé on the phone before alighting from the car and jumping into the lagoon.

Adedokun, who is in her late 30s, was said to have received a letter of commendation from the Director-General of the DSS, Yusuf Bichi, as the best unarmed combat operative in her set a few months ago.

A video of her boyfriend proposing to her had also been trending online since the incident happened. Read more 

Student allegedly kills sex-worker for stealing his phone (Guardian)

A 22-year-old student of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Emmanuel Ujedibe, has been arrested for allegedly killing a commercial sex worker, Peace, in a hotel in Asaba, for stealing his iPhone 11 pro max.

Ujedibe, who was paraded alongside 16 others for various crimes by Delta State Police commissioner, Mr. Ari Mohammed Alli at the weekend, claimed that the victim stole his phone, hence he killed her.

The Political science student allegedly set the hotel room ablaze after killing the girl.

Alli explained that the Police were contacted of the incident, and he ordered “operatives at ‘A’ Division Asaba and Anti-kidnapping section to embark on an intelligence-led investigation, during which the victim’s phone that was stolen by the suspect was recovered from the receiver who bought it from the suspect. Lagos Chief of Staff’s wife Doyin dies (Nation)

The death has occurred of Doyin, wife of Lagos State Chief of Staff Tayo Ayinde.

The deceased, a princess of Ojora of Lagos family, was said to have passed on yesterday. She was 36.

Sympathisers led by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stormed the GRA, Ikeja home of the All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart to commiserate with the bereaved family. 

A condolence register has been opened at the entrance for visitors.

The deceased was eulogised by sympathisers as a devoted wife and pillar of support for her husband. Read more

Lagos targets increased export of made-in-Nigeria products (Guardian)

The Lagos State government has announced plans to boost the export of Made-in-Nigeria products, noting that the present administration is working with various stakeholders to position products and services in the State for increased export.

The Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Folashade Jaji, at the closing ceremony of this year’s Lagos International Trade Fair (LITF), said its efforts are yielding the desired result, as Lagos has become a compelling brand that no investor or business can ignore.

He said the challenge of benchmarking the state against global best practices, making it a model for others to follow is a very herculean task, but achievable.

“Our administration has done a lot to improve the business environment through the implementation of business-friendly policies to improve the ease of doing business in the state, making available incentives and our unrelenting commitment to infrastructural development and renewal. Alleged Defilement: Group urges Lagos Police to arrest, prosecute medical doctor (Independent)

As controversy continues to trail the alleged defilement case against a Medical Practitioner in Lagos, who was said to have defiled his Wife’s 15 years old niece, a call has gone to the Nigeria Police Force to promptly arrest the accused person, Dr Femi Olaleye of Optimal Cancer Care Foundation on Bode Thomas axis of Surulere for prosecution.

The appeal was made over the weekend in Lagos by the Centre Against Injustice and Domestic Violence (CAIDOV) in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Comrade Gbenga Soloki, describing the continuous flagrant disobedience of the police to the advice given by the Office of Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), as “an affront on the Judiciary.”

The CAIDOV boss posited that with the report of the advice issued and served on the Police, via the Office of the Officer in Charge of Legal Services, State Criminal Investigation Department, the accused person still walks around a free man when he had been indicted for child defilement by the report of the DPP. Abuja-Kaduna Train: Rumours about resumption date fake — NRC (Vanguard)

The Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC, has denied the rumour in some media outlets and social media platforms which said the Abuja-Kaduna rail service will resume on 24 November.

The Managing Director of NRC, Fidet Okhiria, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the news is false and should be disregarded.

The Managing Director confirmed that although the Abuja-Kaduna train services would commence in November, no particular date has been officially announced yet. 

According to him, no definite date has been fixed for the resumption but the Federal Government is making every necessary effort to ensure it resumes before the end of November. Read more 

Gunmen kill ex-deputy rector, LG information officer in Benue (Tribune)

Unidentified gunmen killed two people in Okpokwu and Ukum local government areas of Benue State at the weekend.

Our correspondent learnt that the duo of former deputy rector of the State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo in Okpokwu identified as Oche and Ephraim, a former Information Officer of Ukum council areas of the state were reportedly killed on Friday and Saturday respectively.

The incident on Friday which claimed the life of a one-time deputy rector happened when gunmen suspected to be kidnappers ambushed his vehicle while driving along Otukpo-Enugu road with his wife.

Chairman of Okpokwu local government area of the state, Mrs. Amina Audu, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent said that security men who promptly responded were able to rescue the wife. Read more

The former Little Mix star split from her record label over creative differences after reports that she was sent ‘back to the drawing board’ over the album’s material.

Slovenia elects first female president (BBC)

Slovenia has elected a lawyer linked to former US first lady Melania Trump as its first-ever female head of state.

Natasa Pirc Musar is a journalist and lawyer who ran as an independent with the backing of Slovenia’s centre-left government.

She defeated former foreign minister Anze Logar – a veteran of conservative politics.

Ms Pirc Musar won almost 54% of the vote, ahead of Mr Logar who got just over 46%, the election commission said.

Turnout among the population of around two million was 49.9%, the commission said. Read more 

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever quietly reawakens Korean box office with $8.9m opening (Variety)

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” leaped to the top spot at the South Korean box office, with a dominant 80% market share worth $6.53 million over the weekend. In its first five days on release the film amassed $8.87 million.

The total was achieved on 2,538 screens, according to data from Kobis, the theatrical tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).

The superhero title easily brushed aside last week’s chart topper “Confession,” relegating it to $642,000 and a distant second place. After three weeks on release “Confession” has accumulated $5.19 million, a total “Black Panther” passed in four days.

While the change of ranking was dramatic, the numbers were far from super-heroic. Rather, they were in keeping with the depressed state of Korea’s theatrical sector since a summer sizzle fizzled out. Read more

Dave Chappelle took aim at Kanye West during his Saturday Night Live monologue over the weekend.

To open the sketch show on Saturday night, the comedian opened up a piece of paper and read out a “short statement”.

“I denounce antisemitism in all its forms. And I stand with my friends in the Jewish community.’ And that, Kanye, is how you buy yourself some time,” he stated, referring to the controversy surrounding a series of antisemitic comments the rapper made in October.

Taylor Swift walked away with four prizes at MTV’s Europe Music Awards on Sunday, including best video for her 10-minute “All Too Well.”

Double-award winners included Nicki Minaj for best song and best hip-hop, and the French DJ and record producer David Guetta won the best electronic award and best collaboration.

The event, broadcast on MTV from Duesseldorf in western Germany, honored musicians from Brazil to South Korea.

Drake lost a cool $2 million after betting on a UFC title fight.TMZ reported on Saturday (November 13),  middleweight champion Israel Adesanya defeated Alex Pereira during UFC 281 held at Madison Square Garden in NYC. 

By the 5th round of the fight, Pereira hit Adesanya with a whirlwind of punches that left him dazed, but he refused to go down. After seeing enough of the brutality, the referee jumped in and stopped the fight.

Pereira’s victory was the third consecutive time that he defeated Adesanya. Their previous encounters were in kickboxing matches. Read more 

Suspect arrested over Istanbul bombing that killed at least 6 people, injured dozens (ABC)

Turkish police have reportedly arrested a suspect following an explosion in central Istanbul.

Six people were killed and 81 others wounded on Sunday when an explosion rocked a busy pedestrian street in Istiklal Avenue in central Istanbul in what Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan called a bomb attack that “smells like terrorism”.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu revealed on Monday that the person suspected to have left the bomb had been arrested.

Ambulances rushed to the area after the explosion, with police quickly cordoning off the scene. Read more
