The Labour Party governorship candidate in Edo State, Olumide Akpata, has described his voting experience as “seamless”.

He, however, said that his wish is that every other voter in the state will have the same seamless experience as he did.

Nigerian lecturer seeks to shatter Guinness World Record with 150-hour marathon lecture (Vanguard)

Dr. Nsikak Akpan, a Nigerian academic, has received approval from Guinness World Records to attempt a staggering 150-hour non-stop lecture.

Akpan aims to break the existing record held by Indian Professor Arvin Mishra, who delivered a 139-hour, 52-minute, and 42-second lecture in 2014.

The marathon lecture, scheduled to take place from September 23 to 30 at Foreign Links College, Moro, Osun State, will focus on “Relationships between Man’s Environment and Health.” Read more

Ighodalo wins Akpata’s polling unit (DailyTrust)

Olumide Akpata, Labour Party (LP) candidate in the Edo Governorship Election, has lost his polling unit to candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Asue Ighodalo.

According to the result announced at Polling Unit 11, Ward 06, Oredo Local Government Area, Ighodalo polled 41 votes while Akpata trailed with 32 votes.

Monday Okpebholo of the All Progress Congress (APC) came third with 19 votes. Read more

Nigerian Afrobeat artiste, David Adeleke popularly known as Davido has revealed the reason behind his interest in the Edo State gubernatorial election.

Davido, on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday stated that his mother hails from Edo State – and expressed dissatisfaction with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the ongoing election.

He wrote: “My mom is from Edo for those wondering why I’m interested in the election … but we as Nigerians should be concerned sha .. @inecnigeria shame on you I know how many times I had to come in here and rant before they got it right in Osun ! It’s really bad . God help us.” Read more

Generator fume kills 1 in Ogun (Punch)

The Ogun State Police Command on Saturday confirmed the death of one Nwachukwu Ikechukwu, after inhaling generator fumes at their residence at the Shogoye area of Owode-Egba in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government area of the state.

Ikechukwu and his wife, Oyin Falodun, were said to have put on the generator in their sitting room around 10 pm on Thursday, but a neighbour, one Oladayo Olasubomi, who had come to drop the N1000 daily contribution for the wife found the couple lying down unconsciously.

Olasubomi reportedly raised the alarm which attracted other neighbours including the Chairman of the community, one Showunmi Sunday, who reported the sad incident to the Owode-Egba division of the state police command. Read more 

Troops nab ‘‘gunrunners’’ in Plateau, recover arms (DailyTrust)

Troops of Operation Safe Haven who are maintaining peace in Plateau and some parts of Bauchi and Kaduna states have arrested two suspected gun runners in Bakkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The latest arrest came barely 72 hours after the operation arrested five suspected gunrunners and recovered automatic weapons and about 6,000 rounds of assorted ammunition at Bayameni, along Buchi road of Jos North Local Government Area of the state.

Parading the suspects at the OPSH’s headquarters in Jos, the spokesperson of the operation, Major Samson Zhakom, said the suspects were arrested following an intelligence report received by the operation. Read more

Ogbomosho incident: Muslim leaders call for peace, unity, prayer (Tribune)

The Coalition of Organisations in the Defence of Islam in Yorubaland has urged peace, unity, and prayer within Muslim communities across the southwestern part of the country in the aftermath of the Ogbomosho incident, among others.

The coalition made the call in a communiqué issued at the end of a one-day meeting held at the Palace of the Asiwaju Adinni of Oyo State, Alhaji Mutiullah Oladejo, popularly known as Onimalu. The meeting was convened to deliberate on the state of Islam in Yorubaland and find solutions to the Ogbomoso crisis, the attack on a Muslim family by a pastor, heretical ideas being propagated on social media, and to promote peace in general throughout Yorubaland.

In the five-point communiqué read by Barrister AbdulWaheed O. Lawal, the coalition emphasised several key actions to promote harmony among Muslims in Ogbomosho and the Southwest, urging that Muslims throughout Yorubaland should observe tatawah (voluntary fasting) on Mondays and Thursdays throughout 2024. Popstar Kylie Minogue has announced her biggest world tour in more than a decade, and a sequel to her comeback album Tension.

The 13 tracks on Tension II will be released on 18 October, with the global tour kicking off in her home country Australia in February, before swinging through Asia and the UK.

Ridley Scott is already planning ‘‘Gladiator 3’’ (FarOut)

As he prepares to release his hotly anticipated sequel Gladiator 2 in November, veteran director Ridley Scott has revealed that he’s “already toying with the idea of” a third instalment in the franchise.

“Gladiator 2” has big boots to fill, as it serves as the sequel to the beloved, Oscar-winning 2000 epic Gladiator, the film that solidified Russell Crowe’s status as a leading man in Hollywood. The follow-up, arriving 24 years later, is directed and co-produced by Scott, who also helmed the original. This latest instalment in the franchise was written by David Scarpa, based on a story developed by him and Peter Craig.

The upcoming film boasts a star-studded cast featuring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen, Denzel Washington and Joseph Quinn.  Read more

Sri Lankans vote in election to decide how nation recovers from economic crisis (LBC)

Voting has ended in Sri Lanka’s presidential election as the country seeks to recover from the worst economic crisis in its history and the resulting political upheaval.

The election, contested by 38 candidates, is largely a three-way race among incumbent liberal president Ranil Wickremesinghe, Marxist-leaning lawmaker Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and opposition leader Sajith Premadasa.
