Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, presented the 2020 budget of N1.168 trillion to the House of Assembly, saying it is time to imagine a new Lagos, create and realise new and audacious dreams, targets and goals.

“Education will see a significantly increased capital budgetary allocation of N48 billion, an increase of 60 per cent over the 2019 provision of N30 billion. We must improve the standard and relevance of our education outcomes to our industries.

“Similarly, in healthcare, we have provided for a capital expenditure of N33 billion, compared to the 2019 budget proposal of N21 billion,” Sanwo-Olu said.The budget, which the governor tagged ‘Budget of Awakening’ earmarked N723.75 billion (62 per cent) for capital projects and N444.81 billion (38 per cent) for recurrent expenditure. Lagos confirms 400 cases of gastroenteritis (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Ministry of Health has confirmed the outbreak of gastroenteritis in the state with 400 cases and 11 deaths recorded so far.

Announcing this yesterday, the State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi dismissed social media report that over 169 deaths have been recorded as a result of the outback.

According to him, 400 cases have been recorded in health facilities in the affected Local Government Areas, LGAS of Lagos Nigeria ― 370 of these cases have been treated and discharged. Read more

Lagos–Badagry Expressway repairs: LASG announces traffic diversion (Sun)

The Lagos State Government has announced traffic diversion from the major carriageway to the service lane on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway from Nov.9 to Nov.10.

Special Adviser, to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Works and Infrastructure, Mrs Aramide Adeyoye to said that the diversion was to enable the contractors launch beams at the Alakija Interchange Bridge.

Adeyoye in a statement signed by Mr Adesegun Ogundeji, Deputy Director, and Public Affairs of the ministry appealed to motorists and road users on the axis to bear with government. Read more

Another fire guts building in Ebute-Metta (Vanguard)

Barely 24 hours after rescue team finally put out a two-day inferno that gutted a building at Number 43 Martins Street, Balogun Market, Lagos Island, another inferno Friday, broke out in Kano Street, Ebute Metta, Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, LGA, and destroyed several shanties. Fortunately, no casualty recorded.

Ikosi-Ketu Fruit Market demolished for proposed new N2.8bn modern market (NewTelegraph)

The popular Ikosi-Ketu Fruit Market in Ketu area of Lagos was on Friday demolished to pave way for a modern market.

New Telegraph learnt that the Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area, LCDA, has awarded the reconstruction of the dilapidated market to Total Value Integrated Service Limited, which is committing about N2.8 billion to reconstruct the market.

Around 10.00am two bulldozers, escorted by policemen, mostly from the state task force stormed the market to ensure that there was no resistance during the demolition. Read more

A 39-year-old husband, Ibrahim Anifowoshe, on Friday told a Lagos Island Customary Court while seeking dissolution of his 12-year-old marriage that his wife denied him sex, disrespected and embarrassed him in the presence of his friends. Senate probes alleged shady deals by security outfits at Lagos ports (Guardian)

The Senate yesterday mandated its committees on Navy, Marine Transport and Finance to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the activities of Messrs OMLS Limited and other security agencies at the Safe Anchorage Area of the Lagos ports.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the team is to determine the legality of its operations and revenue and report back to the upper legislative chamber in four weeks.

The resolution was a sequel to a motion sponsored by George Sekibo (PDP-Rivers East) during plenary on “Illegal security activities by Messrs OMLS Limited at the Safe Anchorage Area of Lagos ports and the need to investigate their excesses.” Read more

The Federal Government has declared Monday as Public Holiday to mark the 2019 Eid-ul-Mawlud in commemoration of the birthday of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

Mr Mohammed Manga, Director Press and Public Relations of the Ministry of Interior, announced this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

He said the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, congratulated the Muslim faithful on the occasion and enjoined them to live within the virtues and teachings of the Prophet.

Retired military officer arrested for selling babies to politician (Punch)

Operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team have arrested a retired military officer and nurse, Samuel Adagbo, for allegedly selling babies to a politician in Delta State.

Adagbo, 73, was arrested alongside his accomplices, Faith Desmond, Sunday Chinedu, 33 and Joy Monday 23.

While Monday was said to have sold her baby to Adagbo, Chinedu reportedly facilitated the transactions of three children, two of whom the septuagenarian sold to the politician identified only as Francis. Read more

‘No one has come for Sowore, says DSS (Nation)

The Department of State Security (DSS) claimed Friday night that convener of #RevolutionNow Omoyele Sowore remained in its custody because no one had come to pick him.

Sowore had, earlier in the day, embarked on a hunger strike to protest his continued detention two days after perfecting the bail granted him and his co-defendant, Adeyemi Bakare, by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Sex for grades: Kogi federal varsity investigates 12 officials (Nation)

There is unease in the academic and non-academic circles of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Kogi State, over the management of the institution’s alleged discreet investigation of some unidentified lecturers and non-academic staff for alleged sex for grades.

A source in one of the institution’s academic departments confided in our correspondent that no fewer than 12 officials of the institution, including six from the History and International Studies Department, were being investigated for indiscretion and sex with female students in exchange for grades. Conservative election candidate Nick Conrad has said he is standing down over “ill-judged comments” he made on the radio about a rape case.

The former BBC Radio Norfolk presenter, 34, had been chosen as the party’s candidate for the Broadland seat.

He was criticised for saying in 2014 that women should “keep their knickers on” in an on-air discussion about rape.

Labour had said the comments showed he was not fit to be an MP and should be dropped as a candidate. Read more

Brazil ex-President Lula walks free from jail (BBC)

Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been freed after more than 18 months in prison.

The left-wing former leader, known as Lula, was greeted with rapturous applause from crowds of supporters as he walked out of the jail on Friday.

He was held in a prison in the city of Curitiba on corruption charges.

A judge ordered his release after a Supreme Court ruling that defendants should only be imprisoned if they have exhausted their appeal options. Read more
