EFCC arraigns man for alleged N15.5m car proceed theft (Punch)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Wednesday, charged a man, Mike Obaze, before the Ikeja Special Offences Court over alleged theft of N15.5m, proceeds from car sales.

Obaze was arraigned on three counts bordering on stealing preferred against him by the anti-graft agency.

The EFCC’s prosecuting counsel, Ahmed Yerima, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence between November and December 8, 2021, in Lagos. Read more

Bet Naija attendant, friend arraigned for allegedly stealing N16.7m (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command said it had arraigned a Bet Naija attendant, Bojuwoye Adetola and her friend, Bunmi Dada, for allegedly conspiring and stealing the sum of N16.7m from a man, Lukman Issa who played a bet in their outlet in the Iddo area of Lagos State.

The defendants, Adetola and Dada, were arraigned on Monday before Magistrate F.F. George on two counts bordering on stealing.

The police prosecutor, James Okosun, told the court that the two women along with the others currently at large committed the offence between September 12 and 24, 2023 in the Iddo area of Lagos Island. Read more

Defendant’s absence stalls alleged £1m fraud trial (Punch)

The trial of a man, Morufu Adewale (aka Gbegulerin Adelana), and six others who scammed a couple to the tune of £1,000,000 for the purpose of conducting prayers for spiritual cleansing of the family, was, on Monday, stalled due to the absence of the fifth defendant.

Adewale was arraigned alongside Omitogun Ajayi, Ajisegiri Abiodun, Abayomi Alaka (aka Dauda Usman Alashe), Taiwo Ahmed, Raufu Raheem, and Sanlabiu Teslim, before the Ikeja Special Offences Court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Adewale, Ajayi, Ajisegiri and Alaka were first arraigned on February 3, 2022, before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo (retd.), while the three others were said to be at large. Read more

Police to prosecute 14 suspects arrested in multiple Lagos raids (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command said that it would prosecute no fewer than 14 persons arrested in multiple raids across the state for various offences.

The police disclosed this in a post shared on its Facebook page (@Rapid Response) on Saturday.

According to the police, 13 of the suspects were arrested during a raid of some dark spots in the Ikotun area of the state while one of the suspects, Muhammed Yaro, was arrested while trying to cause unrest in the Mushin area of the state. Read more

Police probe as gunmen kill 2, abduct 1 in Lagos (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has said it is investigating the gunmen attack on Wednesday in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State that killed two persons, identified as Suru Arije, 59, and Ilufoye Azeez, 30.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the gunmen also abducted a yet-to-be-identified woman during the incident that happened around 11am in the Alagemo community of Igbelaara, off Ijede road in Ikorodu.

According to police sources, four vigilantes were injured in the course of the attack. Read more

Journalists barred from covering cleric’s alleged fraud case (Punch)

The Chief Magistrate of Yaba Magistrate Court, Adeola Olatubosun, on Wednesday, barred journalists from covering the arraignment of a couple, Pastors Azuka and Mary Ohez, accused of N33,829,30m fraud.

Azuka and his wife, Mary, were accused of allegedly defrauding a company, Climax Lubricant Industries, of the amount stated above.

They were alleged to have committed the offence by aiding the fraudulent act of one Chijoke Ezekirian through false prophecies. Read more

Lagos bizman granted N30m bail over alleged N10m fraud (Punch)

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Tuesday granted N30m bail to a businessman, Lanre Smith, accused of N10m fraud.

Justice Ibrahim Kala granted the bail following a motion filed and argued by the defendant’s lawyer, Akin Apara.

Apara who pleaded with the court to admit the defendant to bail on liberal terms stated that Smith was still presumed innocent until otherwise proved.

The judge agreed with the defence’s submission and granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N30m, with two sureties in like sum. Read more

Woman ‘‘stabs’’ neighbour to death over water (Nation)

The police in Lagos have arrested a woman for allegedly stabbing her neighbour to death over water.

The incident occurred at 10, Tunkarimu Street, Ajegunle Apapa, around 9:30 pm on Sunday.

The suspect, Cynthia Aigbodon, allegedly killed one Barakat Adio during a misunderstanding at a public borehole near their residence. 

Although the exact reason for the fight was yet to be ascertained, sources claimed it was about whose turn it was to fetch water from the public borehole. Read more

LASTMA arrests fake officer over N140k extortion (Nation)

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have apprehended an alleged serial impersonator for allegedly collecting N140,000 from owners of vehicles impounded over traffic infractions.

The vehicles were impounded by LASTMA.

The agency’s Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Taofiq Adebayo, confirmed the  development in a statement yesterday. Read more

Police arrest female ‘‘drug peddler’’, reject N4m, other inducements (Nation)

A 43-year-old suspected female drug peddler, Esther Newman Obiekezie alias Candy has been arrested by the police in Lagos.

Obiekezie was apprehended around 1am on February 6, by operatives attached to Morogbo, Ojo.

The suspect, it was alleged, operated at Mojirade Street, off Ilogbo.

Two live ammunition, substances suspected to be Crystal Methamphetamine and cash sum of N371,970 were recovered during a search of her premises. Read more

Police arraign 6 for allegedly assaulting Lizzy Anjorin in Lagos market (Nation)

No fewer than six traders have been arraigned for allegedly assaulting and blackmailing popular actress, Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal. 

They were arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos Island Local Government.

Those arraigned before Magistrate A. A. Paul include Qudus Jokogbola; Suru Olawale; Edu Shakirat; Fausat Mohammed; Kafayat Ahmed and Opere Simiat Morenike. 

The Nation learnt two other suspects were at large. Read more

18-year-old bags two-year imprisonment for $500 fraud (Nation)

Justice Ismail Ijelu of an Ikeja Special Offences Court on Wednesday sentenced an 18-year-old Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) holder, Henry Bilabi to a two-year imprisonment for impersonating on Tiktok to defraud unsuspecting citizens of $500.

The convict was however given an option of N1 million fine which must be paid within 30 days.

Justice Ijelu sentenced Bilabi following his plea bargain agreement to the charge of impersonation proffered against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Read more
