EFCC receives petition to investigate Tinubu (Guardian)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday received a petition to investigate the source of money conveyed in bullion vans to the home of the All Progressive Congress (APC) National Leader Bola Tinubu on the eve of the 2019 presidential election.

The convener of Concerned Nigerians Deji Adeyanju submitted a petition to the EFCC to investigate Tinubu on Friday.

EFCC is empowered by law to prevent, investigate, prosecute and penalise economic and financial crimes and is charged with the responsibility of enforcing the provisions of other laws and regulations relating to economic and financial crimes. Read more

Man allegedly assaults wife’s four-year-old relative (Punch)

An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, on Friday, ordered that a 34-year-old man, Babatunde Olatunji, who allegedly beat up his wife’s four-year-old relative, be remanded in a correctional facility pending bail.

The Police charged Olatunji for assault.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Adeola Adedayo, remanded the defendant in a Correctional Centre in Ikoyi.

“The defendant should remain behind bars pending when a proper application for his bail is brought before the court,” she said. Read more

No casualty as two-storey building collapse in Lagos (Guardian)

Lagos State Friday said its emergency management agency rescued five persons from a building that collapsed at Ojuelegba area of the state.

The state government said the building collapsed in the early hours of Friday, October 25, 2019, at Rufai Street, off Makinde Street, Ojuelegba.

The government said LASEMA swiftly activated the Lagos Emergency Response Plan for all first responders to move to the site of the collapsed building. Read more

Google celebrates Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s 119th birthday with a doodle (Guardian)

Multinational technology giant, Google, is celebrating the 119th birthday of late Nigeria teacher, political campaigner, women’s rights activist and traditional aristocrat, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti with a Doodle.

The Doodle, illustrated by Nigerian-Italian guest artist, Diana Ejaita, celebrates a formidable leader who founded what many refer to as one of the most important social movements of the twentieth century. Diana Ejaita weaves together Ransome-Kuti’s likeness with women whose lives she changed. The Berlin-based artist’s style of combining dramatic blacks and soft colours to show “the strength of femininity” aligns well with Ransome-Kuti’s powerful story.

Born on this day in 1900 in Abeokuta, the current capital of Nigeria’s Ogun state, the former Frances Abigail Olufunmilayo Thomas grew up witnessing Great Britain consolidating control over Nigeria. As the grandchild of a slave, she became one of the first girls to enrol in Abeokuta Grammar School, before travelling to Cheshire in England to continue her education. Fela deserves national recognition, says Osinbajo (Punch)

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday at a town hall meeting in Edo State said that Afrobeat creator, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti deserved national recognition.

Osinbajo said this while responding to a question from one of the people present at the town hall meeting, who asked that the National Theatre Lagos be named after the legendary musician.

Philippines loses bid to recover millions from estate of former dictator Marcos (Guardian)

The Philippine government has lost a decades-old legal effort to seize millions of dollars from the estate of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, a court said Friday, accusing state prosecutors of failing to produce admissible evidence.

Lawyers had submitted “defective” evidence consisting mostly of poor-quality photocopies, some of which were no longer readable, Justice Alex Quiroz of a special anti-graft court said in a release of the October 14 decision.

The ruling was another blow to efforts to recover the late dictator’s alleged ill-gotten wealth after the court also ruled in favour of Marcos’s estate on another multi-million-dollar case in September. Read more

World’s most expensive bottle of whisky sells for £1.5m (Punch)

The “Holy Grail” of whiskies smashed the record for the most expensive bottle ever sold, going for nearly £1.5 million at a London auction.

The Macallan 1926 60-year-old single malt from cask number 263 had been expected to sell for up to £450,000, but went under the hammer for £1.45 million ($1.9 million, 1.7 million euros) late Thursday, beating the £1.2 million fetched last year by another bottle from the same cask.

Distilled over 90 years ago and aged in European Oak for 60 years, the bottle was one of only 40 that Macallan, based in Moray, northern Scotland, has confirmed were bottled from Cask 263 in 1986. Read more

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Friday told opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn to “man up” and accept a snap December 12 election to help settle the Brexit crisis.

Johnson’s comments came with the Labour main opposition still fighting over how — or if — to take Britain out of the European Union more than three years after a referendum.
