The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) popularly known as KAI has admonished Lagosians to celebrate peacefully during the Eid-l-Fitr and Worker’s Day holidays and embrace environmental consciousness in line with the State Environmental Management Protection Law of 2017.
CP Gbemisola Akinpelu (retd), Corps Marshal of the Agency, made this call on Sunday at the Command Headquarters of the Agency, Bolade-Oshodi. According to her, “we urge Lagosians to enjoy the holidays, pack their refuse for approved PSP operators, continue to keep the environment clean, be peaceful through the festivities and remain security conscious.”
Akinpelu read the riot act against commercial motorcycle operators popularly known as ‘Okada’, dispatch riders, private motorcycle riders and uniformed men who access the wheelchair ramps of pedestrian bridges meant for People Living With Disabilities (PLWD) to cross to the opposite lanes on the expressways in the State.
Speaking further, she highlighted the need for improved professionalism among corps officers of the Agency in commemoration of the annual May Day/Workers Day celebration. Also, she appreciated her entire management team and members of staff of the Agency for the high level of professionalism continuously displayed in the discharge of the duties.
She also noted with dismay the display of goods for sale by hawkers, street traders on the walkways, lay-bys, setbacks, gutters, pedestrians bridges, road medians, verges whilst affirming that these illegal activities hinder smooth vehicular and pedestrian movement in the State.
Whilst suing for safety of lives, the Corps Marshal advocated for pedestrians to make use of strategically-erected pedestrian bridges and not risk their lives to cross the highways only to be knocked down by ‘hit and run motorists. In her final message, the Corps Marshal urged Lagosians to properly sort their waste, shun street trading, avoid crossing wheelchair ramps of pedestrian bridges with motorcycles, be security-conscious and report any suspicious movement to the law enforcement authorities for action.
