Eid-el-Fitr: Lagos Deputy Gov preaches Love, Peaceful Co-Existence (Independent)
As the Muslim faithful celebrate Eid-el-Fitr to commemorate the end of one month Ramadan Fasting period, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, Lagos State Deputy Governor, has called on Lagosians to continue to love and tolerate one another and allow the existing peaceful relations among people of different tribes and religions in the state to continue after Ramadan. In a statement signed by Odusina Akeem, Public Affairs Unit, Office of the Deputy Governor, Adebule urged all Muslims to imbibe the tenets of the Ramadan which, she said, including the fear of God, love for one another, tolerance, equality, obedience, abstinence from sins, discipline and caring for the welfares of fellow human beings irrespective of religions, colour or tongue. MSSN Lagos congratulates Muslims, warns politicians against insincerity (Vanguard)
The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit has congratulated Nigerians over their successful completion of the 1439AH Ramadan. This is as the MSSN Lagos admonished politicians and leaders in the country to be sincere with their electoral promises as the 2019 general election approaches. The Amir (president) of the MSSN in Lagos State, Dr. Saheed Ashafa, said this in an Eid-ul-Fitri press release to mark the end of the 1439AH Ramadan. Ashafa thanked Allah for the relative peace enjoyed in the country in the holy month, adding that Muslims must not relent in engaging in continuous prayer for Nigeria. Read more

There is disagreement among linguists on the definition of the word, ‘mantra.’ On the one hand, in the practise of spiritual disciplines (and especially in Hinduism and Buddhism), a mantra is a word or sound that is believed to have a special spiritual power. Thus, a personal mantra is sometimes repeated as an aid to meditation or prayer. On the other hand , the expression, mantra, is also wide enough to cover a word or phrase that is often repeated, and which expresses a particular strong belief. For instance, British fans often chant the familiar football mantra: “Here we go, here we go, here we go…” There is also a long history of scholarly disagreement on the meaning of mantras and whether they are instruments of mind, as implied by the etymological origin of the word mantra. Tablets for pupils in Ikoyi, Obalende (Nation)
Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State has distributed tablets to pupils. The devices, the council Chairman, Fuad Atanda-Lawal, said were in fulfilment of his promise to give the pupils solid academic background. The gesture, he said, was in partnership with Softcom Limited. Education, he said, had shifted to personalised learning. “The benefits of mobile devices as teaching tools mean they are becoming a common part of the educational experience in classrooms, from primary schools to tertiary institutions. We want to take advantage of this growing trend to improve our children’s access to accurate information and build a future of well-educated individuals. Rotary Club donates furniture to Lagos school (Punch)
The Rotary Club of Palmgrove Estate, Lagos, has donated desks and chairs to Estate Grammar School, Ilupeju. The organisation said the gesture was part of its effort at promoting quality education and conducive learning environment in the community. While presenting the items to the Principals of the junior and senior wings of the school on Wednesday, President of the club, Mr. Atul Kshetry, said the club would continue to support efforts aimed at providing more children with access to quality education. According to him, apart from the desks and chairs donated, the club had also provided potable water and good sanitary facilities in the school for the benefit of the pupils. Read more
Eid-el-Fitri: Prices of Tomatoes, Pepper, Chicken increase in Lagos Markets (Independent)
Ahead of Eid-el-Fitri celebration on Friday, prices of tomatoes, pepper and chicken have increased in major markets in Lagos, A survey on Thursday at Mile 12, Oyingbo, Iddo and Ikosi Markets, revealed that a 40kg basket of tomatoes, which previously cost N30,000 in May now goes for N35, 000. A 50kg basket of “tatashe’’ (pepper) rose from N17, 000 to N20, 000, while a basket of Chilli pepper (rodo) also increased from N16, 000 to N20, 000. Similarly, a 1 kilogramme of frozen chicken increased from N1, 000 to N1,200, while its carton goes for N8,400. The price of live chicken sells between N2,500 and N5, 000, depending on the size. Ile-Epo Market: LCDA assures traders of getting shops (Punch)
The Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area on Thursday said work had started on the N2bn Ile-Epo Market redevelopment project. The market, located in the Abule Egba area along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, was demolished recently to pave way for the construction of a modern market. The market is being redeveloped by the LCDA in conjunction with Total Value Integrated Limited under a Public-Private Partnership agreement. The Chairman, Agbado Oke-Odo LCDA, Augustine Arogundade, said none of the traders who owned shops in the old market would be left out. Read more

Lagos CP assures on Crime-Free Festival (Independent)
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Edgal Imohimi on Thursday assured Lagosians of a crime-free festival as the Muslims celebrate the Eid el fitr. The police boss said the show of force by the command was a form of safety assurance to members of the public. The CP made the statement while addressing policemen from various divisions in the state who gathered at the command to commence the show of force exercise. He added that the show of force was also to form partnership with members of the public and not to intimidate them. Read more
FG properties abandoned in Lagos amid mounting housing deficit (BusinessDay)
Amid mounting housing and infrastructure deficit in Nigeria, a number of Federal Government’s abandoned properties have continued to rot away in Lagos several years after the federal capital was moved from Lagos, the country’s commercial capital, to Abuja.These properties which include the old Federal Secretariat, Ikoyi, old National Assembly Complex at Tafawa Balewa Square, Independence Building that housed the Defence Ministry and former Federal Ministry of Commerce, at Tinubu Square have been left un-utilised since the seat of power was moved to Abuja by the former military president, Ibrahim Babangida. Expert: $1.5bn Lekki Deep Seaport will boost Nigeria’s Economy (ThisDay)
A maritime expert and professor at the Lagos Business School, Frank Ojadi, has called on the federal government to ensure perfect operations of deep seaports in the country, particularly the Lekki Deep Seaport in Lagos, which is expected to kick off in the next two years. Ojadi, who spoke on the imperatives of deep seaports in Nigeria (A case study of Lekki Deep Seaport), during a training programme for journalists in Lagos, described the $1.5 billion project as a noble idea, which would significantly boost the economy of the country. He stated that deep seaport was essential because good nautical access was essential for maritime connectivity of ports. Read more

Following a repost by comedian Ali Baba, concerning a little boy named Taju, whose video went viral few days ago on a call to help find the boy, who needs to go to school, succour is on the way as Nollywood actress and producer, Funmi Awelewa, who began the search, found him. Confirming that Taju has been found and is on his way to Lagos, another celebrity comedian, actor and producer, AY, said Taju is already on his way to Lagos. “A very big thank you to @funmiawelewa who visited Taju and his family for our common interest of making sure he goes to school,” he posted. My fears for COSON -Ken Calebs-Olumese, Guv’nor, Niteshift (SUN)
The crisis rocking the nation’s sole collective management organisation, Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), is festering by the day. Even with the interventions of major stakeholders in the entertainment industry, it seems peace is still elusive. Only recently, the regulatory agency, Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) through a letter mandated Tony Okoroji to step down as the chairman of COSON. However, Okoroji stuck to his gun, declaring and insisting that NCC has no power to control or meddle in COSON’s internal affairs. Taking a step further, NCC suspended the license it granted COSON. And now the fear is that if the crisis remains unresolved, the license may be revoked entirely in the next couple of months. Early-morning gridlock on Third Mainland Bridge worries motorists (SUN)
Motorists plying the Third Mainland Bridge want the Lagos State government to address the early-morning traffic congestion that has for long been a common feature on the facility. The gridlock, which at its worst times begins from the Oworonshoki end of the bridge, sometimes stretches as far as Lagos Island. At the terminal point of the gridlock, nothing significantly can be identified as its causative factor. But some people believe that the situation is caused by motorists turning either into Ebute Metta or Adeniji Adele Street on the Island. As they slow down, they force other motorists behind them to slow down, too. Within a short while, traffic begins to build. Read more
Unemployed man accused of touching woman’s breasts (Punch)
A 25-year-old unemployed man has been accused of assaulting a woman, Faith Ijiogbe, by repeatedly touching her breasts. Punch Metro learnt that Kabiru Saka, who resides in the Alagbado area of Lagos State on June 11, begged Ijiogbe to give him a carton of canned drink which accidentally fell off a motorcycle when she was conveying them to her shop. Saka was said to have run to meet Ijiogbe demanding the carton that fell, saying he wanted to use it as a sacrifice to the gods. The 25-year-old allegedly touched Ijiogbe’s breast and hit her husband with a weapon when she handed the carton of canned drink to her husband. Read more
Lagos to punish 2 sanitation officers for ‘misconduct’ (Nation)
Two Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) officers arrested last week in Apapa will be punished for alleged misconduct, Commissioner for the Environment, Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti said yesterday. Oduyomi Oluwakemi with Oracle Number 193886 and Ofoesuwa Oluwayemi – 194375 – were said to have conspired with some traders to display their wares on the road median. The officers, the commissioner said, would be dealt with in accordance with the laws to deter others. Durosinmi-Etti said: “Officers of L AGESC must maintain discipline and integrity in carrying out their duties, as they are ambassadors of the Lagos State Government. The state government has a policy of zero-tolerance on street trading, display of goods on road medians and roadside hawking. Read more
Lagos filling station denies polluting land, water (Punch)
The dealer of Total Filling Station, Akoka branch, Aleem Maruf, has refuted allegations of abandoning residents of the Akoka area of Lagos State after a leakage occurred on the station premises in 2017. He said less than a month after the incident, the fuel flow was stopped, adding that the damage on the environment had also been halted. Punch Metro had reported on Tuesday that residents of the community raised the alarm over the contamination of their land and water due to petrol leakage from the station’s underground tank. They said their business and health had been affected. Read more
Woman ‘pours hot water’ on hubby (Nation)
A 32- year-old woman, Joy Imeribe, who allegedly poured hot water on her husband was yesterday charged before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court. The accused, a trader, who lives at 21, Karounwi Street, Itire, Lagos, was arraigned on a one-count charge of assault. Prosecuting Inspector Clifford Ogu said the accused committed the offence on May 29. Ogu said the accused’s husband, Ibe, alleged that his wife came home late. The woman was said to have become irate when he asked her why she returned home late. Read more
Lagos residents jubilate as Police kill gang leader (Vanguard)
Residents of Cele, Adio, Alasia communities in Ijaniki area of Lagos State are reportedly jubilating over the killing of a gang leader, Dadi a.k.a Arrow Head, by police operatives. It was gathered that there was a gun battle between the police and the gang members during an initiation ceremony of the gang leading to the death of Arrow Head and the arrest of three others by the police. A resident, who does not want his name in print, said “sporadic sound of gunshots led policemen to the scene where they arrested three members of the gang fully dressed in their regalia while the other members fled, the lifeless body of Dadi, aka Arrow head, was discovered in the pull of his blood.
