Eight Lagos naval ratings torture peacemaker to death over N250 (Punch)

Attempts by a peacemaker, Collins Osagie, to settle a disagreement between a spare parts trader and a naval rating in the Okokomaiko area of Lagos State, has cost him his life.

Osagie, a bus driver, was tortured to death for offering to pay the rating N250, the main cause of his disagreement with the trader.

A video of the torture, captured by a resident and posted on Instagram, revealed the moments two of the uniformed men punched and kicked the victim into a gutter.

The 34-year-old was later rushed to a private medical facility where he died.

Photos of the deceased’s corpse, obtained by PUNCH Metro, revealed visible torture marks on different parts of the body. His head also appeared to have been fractured. Read more

Lagos deploys COVID-19 safety marshals across jetties (Guardian)

The Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC) has reiterated commitment ofto safety of lives on waterways across jetties in Lagos.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Director-General of LSSC, Mr Lanre Mojola, disclosed that the commission, Office of the Sustainable Development Goals and Lagos State Waterways Authority have trained and deployed 48 COVID-19 volunteers as safety marshals to jetties across the state.

The session, led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on SDGs, Mrs Solape Hammond, Mojola, and General Manager, Lagos Waterways Authority, Mr Damilola Emmanuel, took turns to express gratitude to the volunteers for devoting their times to service while reminding citizens that the fight against the pandemic is still on. Lagos school principals, others protest five months’ salary arrears (Punch)

Principals and other members of staff of the Livingstone College, Ikorodu, Lagos State, have protested against the alleged refusal of the school’s Chairman, Olushola Kolawole-Christwealth, to pay their salaries for five months.

The protesters, who were seen carrying placards with different inscriptions and chanting solidarity songs during a demonstration on Tuesday, August 18, said the arrears had been owed before the inception of the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that from March till date, none of the staff had been paid.

One of the principals, Moses Farotimi, said efforts to get the chairman to pay the arrears had been abortive, adding that despite owing five months’ salaries, the school management wanted the staff to resume. Read more

Sanwo-Olu’s wife, others canvass indigenous languages against rape, others (Guardian)

Wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has said that sensitisation campaigns against rape should be carried out in indigenous languages to allow members of the public to understand the need to shun rape and other social vices.

The governor’s wife, who spoke at an all-men walk/campaign against rape organised by Mirabel Centre and Bariga Chapter of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), as well as the unveiling of a signpost declaring Bariga as a rape-free-zone at the weekend, said that using indigenous languages in communicating the message against rape would end the scourge in communities. Court freezes 65 accounts for forex manipulation (Nation)

A court has granted the request by the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN) to freeze 65 Bank accounts linked to 12 firms and a man.

They are suspected to be involved in the manipulation of the foreign exchange market.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, gave the order while ruling on a motion ex-parte filed by CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele and argued by former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mike Aondoakaa (SAN). Read more

Teen nabbed for stealing women’s underwear (Guardian)

A 16-year-old boy, Adeniyi Muhammed, has been arrested by men of the Ogun State police command for stealing 14 women’s underwear. The suspect was arrested following a report by one Amudalat Opaleye, a resident of Kano Street, Ayetoro, who reported at Ayetoro Police Station.

According to her, at about 6:00a.m. on August 18, the suspect sneaked into her room and stole her pants, but while trying to sneak out, he was caught with the pants.

Upon the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Ayetoro, Mobolaji Jimoh, detailed his detectives to the scene where the suspect was arrested. His house was searched and another 14 used woman pants were recovered there. Read more

Resumption of international flights : NAMA creates new PBN routes (Vanguard)

As Nigeria prepares  to resume international flight operations on the 29th of August , the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, said it  has created 9 new Performance Based Navigation (PBN) Area Navigation 10 (RNAV10) regional routes across the nation’s airspace.

Making this disclosure, the Managing Director of NAMA, Captain Fola Akinkuotu listed the newly created PBN routes to include  “UQ300- connecting Lagos to the Central African Republic; UY604-linking Abuja, Port Harcourt to Southern Africa; UQ181- connecting East and Central Africa to Europe through Nigerian airspace and UQ400-connecting southern Africa to North Africa through Nigeria to Europe”. El-Rufai: Ikeja, Kano, PH, other branches shun call to boycott NBA confab (Punch)

Branches of the Nigerian Bar Association in Katsina, Ikeja, Abeokuta, Kano, Port Harcourt and other major towns on Sunday said they would attend the NBA annual general meeting starting on Wednesday.

The groups, in separate interviews with our correspondents, faulted the call by the Kaduna State branch of the Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria for all Muslim lawyers to withdraw from the conference because of the NBA’s withdrawal of the invitation to the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who was initially one of the speakers at the meeting.

But the branch of the association in Bauchi insisted on its position that it would not attend the conference if the NBA failed to rescind its decision to withdraw El-Rufai’s invitation. Read more

Mali: Military want three year transition, Keita to be freed (Aljazeera)

The military government that seized power in Mali wants a military-led transitional body to rule the country for three years and has agreed to release deposed President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, a source in a visiting West African delegation said on Sunday.

“The junta has affirmed that it wants a three-year transition to review the foundations of the Malian state. This transition will be directed by a body led by a soldier, who will also be head of state,” a source in the ECOWAS delegation in capital Bamako told the AFP news agency.

“The government will also be predominantly composed of soldiers” under the military government’s proposal, the source said on condition of anonymity. Read more

The Australian white supremacist who killed 51 Muslim worshippers at two mosques in New Zealand last year is facing survivors of his attack as a sentencing hearing gets under way.

Australian Brenton Tarrant is likely to be jailed for life for the rampage.

Tarrant pleaded guilty in March and was convicted of 51 murders, 40 attempted murders and one charge of terrorism.

US approves use of blood plasma treatment on coronavirus patients (BBC)

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given emergency authorisation for the use of plasma to treat coronavirus patients.

The technique uses antibody-rich blood plasma from people who’ve recovered from the disease, and has already been used on over 70,000 people in the US.

President Donald Trump said the treatment could reduce deaths by 35%.

It comes a day after he accused the FDA of impeding the rollout of vaccines and therapeutics for political reasons. Read more

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has fallen into a coma, a former South Korean official is claiming on the heels of reports that the northern leader has ceded over some of his power to his younger sister.

Chang Song-min, a former aide to late-South Korean president Kim Dae-jung, has alleged that the Hermit Kindom’s honcho has become seriously ill amid speculation about his limited public appearances this year, the Mirror reported.

Larry King speaks after two of his children die within three weeks (PageSix)

Legendary broadcaster Larry King on Sunday spoke about the passing of two of his children who tragically died in the last three weeks for the first time.

In a post on Facebook, King wrote, “It is with sadness and a father’s broken heart that I confirm the recent loss of two of my children, Andy King, and Chaia King. Both of them were good and kind souls and they will be greatly missed.”

Chaia was 51 and Andy was 65.

“Andy passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on July 28th, and Chaia passed on August 20th, only a short time after having been diagnosed with lung cancer,” he wrote, “Losing them feels so out of order. No parent should have to bury a child.” Read more

Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race: Hundreds join Istanbul competition (BBC)

While many sporting events have been cancelled by the coronavirus pandemic, a unique swimming challenge took place in Istanbul on Sunday.

Hundreds of competitors took part in the 32nd Samsung Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race, which is considered one of the world’s best open water swimming races and the only intercontinental swimming contest.
