Ekiti police intensify search for missing varsity student (Punch)

The police in Ekiti State have said search efforts for a missing 500-level student of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Helen Eberechukwu Okorie, were ongoing.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Sunday Abutu, said that the 23-year-old female student, resident at the Irona area of Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, had been missing since 13th September, 2023.

NDLEA intercepts, seizes Abuja-bound loads of Nitrous Oxide (Vanguard)

No fewer than 1,194 cylinders of laughing gas with a total weight of 2,547.2 kilograms loaded in two Toyota Sienna buses were on Friday 22nd September intercepted by NDLEA operatives along Okene-Lokoja-Abuja expressway.

Two suspects: Onyebuchi Ikpozu and Kenneth Igwe who were taking the consignments to the nation’s Federal Capital Territory for distribution have been arrested and taken into custody.

While one of the Toyota Sienna buses marked KTU 582 HV was conveying 99 cartons containing 594 cylinders weighing 1,267.200kgs, the second bus with registration number FKJ 329 YA was conveying 100 cartons of the substance with 600 cylinders weighing 1,280kgs. Read more

Private medical doctors kick over bias in LASUTH missing intestine case (NewTelegraph)

Private medical doctors under the auspices of the Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners (ANPMP), Lagos State chapter have faulted the report of the panel constituted by the State House of Assembly to investigate the missing intestine of the late 12-year-old Adebola Akin-Bright.

Also, the Lagos State chapter of ANPMP, noted that the absence of a medical doctor in the panel has made the job difficult as it was clear evidence that members of the panel were genuinely ignorant of some of the workings of the medical profession, which became obvious from some of the questions posed during their sitting.

Some residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have described the rate of kidnapping and robbery within the city centre in recent time, as alarming.

Some of the residents who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday described the spate of insecurity in the FCT as worrisome, alarming and unacceptable.

Dozens killed in Benin after fuel depot explodes into flames (AlJazeera)

At least 35 people have been killed in Benin after a fuel depot exploded into flames, sending a black cloud of smoke into the sky, according to officials and witnesses.

The fire broke out on Saturday at a warehouse for smuggled fuel in the town of Seme-Podji near the border with Nigeria, where cars, motorbikes and tricycle taxis came to stock up on fuel, residents said.

“The fire burned down the store and according to an initial assessment resulted in 35 deaths including one child,” Prosecutor Abdoubaki Adam-Bongle in a statement. Read more 

1 Kosovo police officer killed and 1 wounded, raising tensions with Serbia (NPR)

Kosovo’s prime minister on Sunday said one police officer was killed and another wounded in an attack he blamed on support from neighboring Serbia, increasing tensions between the two former war foes at a delicate moment in their European Union-facilitated dialogue to normalize ties.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti said “masked professionals armed with heavy weapons” opened fire on a police patrol in the village of Banjska, Leposavic, 55 kilometers (35 miles) north of the capital Pristina at 3 a.m. (01:00 GMT), killing one officer. Another officer was injured but his condition is not life-threatening.

Kosovo police said two trucks with no license plates had blocked a bridge at the entrance of the village. Three police units were sent to unblock it but came under fire from different positions with different weapons, hand grenades and bombs. Read more

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met with Djiboutian leaders and the president of Somalia in Djibouti on Sunday, marking his first trip to Africa as Secretary of Defense amid continued violence in the region. Later in the week, he will travel to Kenya and Angola.

Djibouti is home to the U.S. military’s major base on the continent, and Austin said Camp Lemonnier was “critical” to “countering violent extremism and supporting security throughout the region.”

Lewis Hamilton called upon the FIA to use artificial intelligence to help with Formula 1 penalty decisions.
