Electrician bags life jail for raping benefactor’s daughter (Punch)

Justice Abiola Soladoye of an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, on Tuesday, convicted and sentenced a 27-year-old electrician, Olamide Ayodele, to life imprisonment for defiling the eight-year-old daughter of his benefactor.

The judge held that the prosecution proved the charge of defilement against the convict.

Justice Soladoye held that the court found that the evidence of the prosecution witnesses was believable and consistent.

She said, “The defendant is immoral, a mega liar, ungrateful, unkind, ruthless and rash in his conduct considering the survivor’s father picked him from the streets and treated him like one of his children. Read more

N13b drugs, military hardware seized at Lagos airport (Punch)

The Murtala Muhammed Airport Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has said it intercepted hard drugs, and military and police hardware at the cargo section of the airport.

Addressing journalists at the command in Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday, the Customs Area Controller, Sambo Dangaladima, said 162 cartons of banned tramadol hydrochloride 225 and 250mg, military and police hardware were intercepted at the Skyway Aviation Handling Company.

Explaining further, he said the drugs originated from India and Pakistan and were routed through Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia.

Dangaladima said the drugs had an estimated duty-paid value of N13.8bn.

NAPTIP petitioned over Lagos baby’s disappearance (Punch)

A non-governmental organisation, Women Advocates’ Research and Documentation Centre, has petitioned the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Person to intervene in the disappearance of a newborn at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro had reported that a policeman attached to the formation, Samuel Ukpabio, allegedly took the child from his mother, Fortune Obafuoso.

The aggrieved mother said on Friday, December 23, 2022, when she was delivered of her baby, the policeman arrested her alongside the newborn to the SCID on the allegation that she wanted to sell the baby, a claim she denied.

The 35-year-old noted that Ukpabio, while interrogating her at the SCID, forcefully took her baby and handed him over to a yet-to-be-identified woman from a ministry in the state. Read more

Lagos policeman kills trader in Alaba market (Punch)

A yet-to-be-identified trader has been shot dead by a policeman at the Alaba Rago Market, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the police invaded the market to make an arrest but were resisted by traders.

The situation resulted in a clash between the policemen from the Okokomaiko division and the traders.

A policeman was said to have fired a shot that hit a trader, who died from the gunshot injuries. Read more

Scrap collector in court for causing man’s death (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a scrap collector, Wasiu Adeyi, before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court for allegedly causing the death of a car washer, Owoseni Abayomi.

The police prosecutor, Rita Momoh, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on December 1, 2022, on Babalola Street, Freedom Way, Ikate, Lekki.

Momoh stated that 42-year-old Adeyi had a quarrel with the victim, which degenerated into a fight.

The defendant was said to have pushed the deceased to a wall as the victim died on the spot. Read more

Court remands 25-year-old for raping minor (Punch)

A 25-year-old man, Akinbode Ridwan, was on Monday remanded in the Kirikiri Custodial Centre by an Ogba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for allegedly raping a 16-year-old minor.

Magistrate E. Kubenji made the order after the defendant was arraigned by the police on one count of defilement.

The police prosecutor, Kehinde Ajayi, said Ridwan allegedly raped the victim in the Bariga area of Lagos State sometime in 2021.

The prosecutor, who read the statement of the defendant in open court, said he claimed that the sex was consensual. Read more

Customs intercept cannabis worth N516m in Lagos (Punch)

The Customs Strike Force, Team A, Ikeja, has said that it intercepted 5,124 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, along the coast of Lekki, Lagos.

The Customs Comptroller in charge of the team, Sani Yusuf, while addressing journalists on Wednesday at the command, said the contraband with an estimated duty paid value of N516 million, was intercepted following credible intelligence in January 2023.

He added that the contrabands were being moved directly from the ship to trucks before his men intercepted them.

“The Cannabis was intercepted following credible intelligence. We intercepted it somewhere around Lekki along the coast at midnight. On getting there, we saw a lot of men loading the contrabands from the ship directly into the truck despite the sea waves. Read more

33-year-old man arraigned for attempted murder (Punch)

The police have arraigned a 33-year- old man, Segun Agunbiade, before an Ogba Magistrates’ Court, Ikeja, Lagos State, for allegedly attempting to kill one Ozim Maureen with a knife.

Agunbiade was alleged to have carried out the act on January 10, 2023, on Balogun Street, Agege, Lagos.

The defendant was arraigned before Chief Magistrate M.O. Joseph, on four counts.

1 shot dead as police, Lagos traders clash (Punch)

One person was shot dead on Tuesday when policemen attached to the Okokomaiko Division in Lagos State clashed with traders at the Alaba Rago Market, Ojo Local Government of the state.

The police officers visited the market to arrest a suspect but came under attack from the large number of traders.

The PUNCH gathered that the attack led to a clash between both parties.

Man bags life imprisonment for defiling 8-year-old (Punch)

An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Tuesday, sentenced a 27-year-old electrician, Olamide Ayodele, to life imprisonment for defiling the eight-year-old daughter of a man that gave him shelter.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the convict was 25 years old when he committed the offence.

Justice Abiola Soladoye held that the prosecution had convincingly proved the charge of defilement against the convict.

Court sentences vulcaniser to death for robbing nurse of N57k (Leadership)

An Ikeja Special Offences Court presided over by Justice Mojisola Dada sentenced a 32-year-old vulcaniser, Chidozie Onyinchiz, to death by hanging on Tuesday for robbing a nurse of N57,000.

Justice Dada held that the prosecution had proved the charges of conspiracy, armed robbery, and membership of an unlawful society against Onyinchiz.

Dada said the convict’s attempt to wriggle out of the charges was futile.

This, she said, was because he had earlier confirmed to the police at Igando, Lagos, that his victim, Veronica Uwayzor sighted him and they both recognised each other at the time of the offence. Read more

Police Witness tells court how ASP Vandi murdered Raheem (ThisDay)

A prosecution witness, Inspector, Matthew Ahmen, yesterday told a Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square how his team leader, ASP Drambi Vandi, allegedly killed female lawyer Bolanle Raheem while enforcing a stop-and-search in Ajah area of Lagos State.

The witness in his testimony before Justice Ibironke Harrison, stated that he was enlisted into the Police Force in 2001.

According to him, during the Stop-and-Search exercise, Vandi who was the team leader was behind while he was in the middle, and another colleague, Inspector Dimini, was in the front when the incident occurred.

According to him, when Dimini saw a car coming, he flagged it down but the car refused to stop, and when the car got to where he was standing, he also flagged the car down, but again the car did not stop. Read more
