Eliminate waste to boost productivity, Ambode tells workers (Punch)

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday said he desired to increase productivity, urging the state civil servants to eliminate waste in the system. The governor spoke at the opening ceremony of two-day training for top civil servants in Ikeja. Ambode said, “The Lagos State Civil Service has come a long way in reducing waste while increasing productivity. This is partly the result of the extensive investment in training by his administration.” The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr. Benson Oke, stated that studies had shown that with good management of time, meagre resources could be explored to produce outstanding results. LASG seeks commitment to mediation (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has urged officials of the Citizens Mediation Centre to be more dedicated to resolving conflicts among residents of the state. The Chairman of the CMC Governing Council, Justice Oluyemi Gbajabiamila (retd.), gave the advice during a familiarisation tour of all the CMC units across the state, a statement said on Tuesday. Gbajabiamila, who led members of the governing council, stated that the visit was to enable the council members to get first-hand information about the challenges being faced by the officials and make recommendations to the appropriate quarters for solutions. Lagos-East endorses senator (Nation)

The Lagos East Senatorial District executive has passed a vote of confidence in the Senator representing the district in the Senate, Gbenga Ashafa, and backed his re-election bid. A statement on Tuesday said the executive of the district and members of Ashafa’s ward in the Bogije Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State, as well as the executive of the Ibeju Lekki Local Government Area took the decision during an Easter get-together for residents of Ibeju Lekki. Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), will be the special guest at the public lecture of the Department of Commercial and Industrial Law, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos (UNILAG). iREP 2018 and the new frontiers of narrating Africa (Guardian)

When the curtains fell on iREPRESENT International Documentary Film Festival 2018 at Freedom Park, Lagos, over a week ago, festival-goers in their large numbers from across continents had a glimpse of the seamless narrative that Africa continues to offer. Sadly, it is a narrative that offers very little cheer although hope abounds. Many, if not all the documentary films shown, offered one stark, ironic reality after another and which characterises Africa’s contradictions that defy commonsense and logic. In most cases, the documentaries that were offered from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to Burkina Faso, to Ghana and Nigeria and beyond pitted the people against their governments. Read more

Wednesday’s FEC meeting put off, NSC holds instead (SUN)

The weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) is not holding today, but President Muhammadu Buhari will be meeting with the National Security Council (NSC) by noon. The NSC meeting normally holds on Mondays but the Federal Government had declared March 30 and Monday, April 2 as public holiday because of the Easter celebration. This is the fourth time the FEC meeting would be put off in the Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. The last time the meeting was put off was Wednesday, February 28, 2018. Read more

Ex-Rep, Ogunewe, dies at 58 (Punch)

A former member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Independence Ogunewe, has been reported dead in his Abuja residence. Ogunewe, 58, represented Ahiazu/Ezinhitte Federal Constituency of  Imo State, from 2003 to 2011. His body was said to have been found in the rest room on Tuesday. In the 6th Assembly (2007-2011), he was the Chairman, House Committee on Aviation. It will be recalled that back then, Ogunewe, Mr. Dino Melaye and nine other members, gave the 6th Assembly Speaker, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, a tough time when they raised some allegations bordering on the finances of the House against the leadership. Senator Mustapha Bukar dies at 63 (SUN)

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital market, Sen. Mustapha Bukar, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Katsina State, is dead. Sen. Bukar, who was Madawakin Daura, died around 10.00a.m. on Wednesday, following an illness. He was believed to be one of the Pro-APC senators loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari in the Red Chamber. He was born on December 31, 1954 in Daura and was a first timer at the Senate. Read more

FIFA testing new rules: yellow cards for coaches (Nation)

Football’s ruling body FIFA is testing three possible new rules including yellow cards for coaches at youth tournaments, according to Deputy Secretary-General Zvonimir Boban. Boban told Wednesday’s edition of German weekly Sport Bild that coaches and other officials are currently sent off immediately for offences which is not ideal. “Up to now coaches were sent to the stands straight away in the case of wrongdoings. “The yellow card informs the coach that he has to control his temper, otherwise he is in for it,” Boban said. Former Sudanese president calls for international protection of Palestinians (Memo)

Former Sudanese President Field Marshal Abdel Rahman Suwar Al-Dahab has called on the international community to protect Palestinians from “Zionist crimes,” Quds Press reported. “Today’s priority is not speaking about a safe Israeli state, but securing the life of the Palestinians in the face of the crimes the [Israeli] occupation carries out against them,” he said, adding: “Israel has a right to live in peace if it responds to the just demands of the Palestinian people, but this is not the time to speak about this.” Read more
