A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa on Tuesday condemned a statement credited to the Police allegedly threatening to suppress a rally planned by youths to mark the 2020 #Endsars protests against police brutality that led to the shooting at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos.

Lagos Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu had in the statement warned the youths to jettison their plan as “the police will use all legitimate means within their constitutional powers to suppress the planned protest”.

Protesters on October 8, 2020, began a nationwide protest, calling for the ban of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the police due to the squad’s brutal treatment of youths.

The protest was largely peaceful until October 20, 2020 when soldiers and policemen were accused of shooting at and killing some protesters at the Lekki Toll Plaza, a claim the army, police, Lagos State and Federal Government have denied. Read more

Court remands unemployed man for illegal possession of gun (Vanguard) 

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded a 23- year-old unemployed  man, Habeeb Musa, who allegedly illegally possessed a locally-made gun.

The defendant, who resides in Ikorodu, Lagos State, is facing charges of conspiracy, membership of secret society and illegal possession of  gun.

The court could not take the defendant’s plea as the Chief Magistrate, Mrs S. K. Matepo, said she needed advice from the state director of public prosecutions.

She ordered that Musa should be kept at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, and adjourned the case until Nov. 3 for mention. Read more

Man hires thugs to attack teacher for beating daughter in Ogun (Punch)

A 35-year-old man, Abidemi Oluwaseun has been arrested by men of the Ogun State Police Command for hiring thugs to attack a teacher for beating his 15-year-old daughter.

Oluwaseun reportedly invaded Baptist Girls College, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta with two thugs on Tuesday to attack a teacher who he accused of beating his daughter.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP, Abimbola Oyeyemi disclosed this on Tuesday in a statement. Read more

My fight with Tiwa Savage would have been messier – Seyi Shay (Nation) 

Afropop singer Seyi Shay has revealed how she was able to mitigate the effect of her fight with her colleague, Tiwa Savage.

Few months ago, the duo engaged in mudslinging at a salon in Lagos after Seyi Shay walked up to Tiwa to exchange pleasantries.

In a recent interview with media personality, Chude Jideonwo, the 35-year-old pop singer said the fight with her colleague could have been muckier if she wasn’t at peace with herself at the time.

Although, she admitted to have been taken aback at Tiwa’s reaction to a harmless greeting. Read more

Felabration: Fela’s clarity of purpose attracted me – 79-year-old ex-manager (Punch) 

Mr Rikki Stein, ex-manager of the late afro-beat king, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, on Tuesday said he was attracted to the musician because he resolved to fight for the rights of the common man.

Stein, who worked with Fela for 15 years, disclosed to the News Agency of Nigeria in an interview in Lagos. Stein, aged 79, flew in from London to celebrate the life and times of Anikulapo-Kuti at the ongoing Felabration.

He said that the late legendary musician had virtues he admired, listing them to include courage, truthfulness, bluntness and genuine love for the common man.

Stein urged Nigerians and Africans generally to uphold the virtues to live peacefully and achieve greatness. Read more

El-Rufai presents 2022 draft budget of N233b to Assembly (Vanguard) Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has  presented the 2022 draft budget of N233 billion to  Kaduna State House of Assembly, with a capital expenditure of N146 billion and recurrent spending of N87.6 billion.

Giving a further  breakdown of the N233billion  budget estimate, the governor disclosed that it has a capital to recurrent ratio of 63% : 37%.

El Rufai   noted that the 2022 estimates are slightly smaller than the 2021 budget  of N237.52bn, which had N157.56bn as capital and N79.96bn recurrent expenditure, a 66% to 34% capital to recurrent ratio.

He further said that the priorities of the 2022 estimates are  on Education, Healthcare and Infrastructure, like previous budgets. Read more

Olamide set for 9-city US tour (Leadership)

Nigerian rapper, Olamide, has officially announced that he will be going on tour of the U.S, beginning from November 2021.

The tour tagged “Carpe Diem Tour” named after his album, was announced by the rapper via his social media page on Monday, October 11, 2021.

The tour will see Olamide make stops in nine U.S. cities from Friday, November 5, 2021 to Sunday, November 28, 2021.

The rapper will perform in Minneapolis, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Providence, New York City, and DMV. Read more

Reps adjourn plenary over breakdown of Air-conditioning system (Vanguard) 

The House of Representatives Tuesday rushed through the legislative business of the day, decrying the unbearable heat in the chamber.

A member of the House, Rep. Haruna Dederi (APC-Kano), through  Point of Order, had pleaded for the plenary to be adjourned.

While raising the other, he said “Sir Order 7 of the rules of this House has given you powers to absolutely control whatever goes on here to preserve decorum.

“To preserve the atmosphere within which we should operate. We are  suffocating because the place is extremely hot. In my opinion Sir, we could have a way of either adjourning the business of the day or give time so that the air conditioners can  be out in proper shape. Whatever thing that you can do to save us from this physical situation in which we live”. Read more

DSS flies actor Chiwetalu Agu to Abuja, bars family visitation (Punch)

The Department of State Services has flown veteran actor, Chiwetalu Agu, to Abuja as part of investigations for promoting Biafra and allegedly inciting members of the public.

Agu was first arrested by the Nigerian Army on October 7, 2021, around Upper Iweka in Onitsha, Anambra State, for wearing a Biafra outfit while distributing bread and other items to the poor.

The army had accused him of soliciting support for the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra which has been accused of several acts of terrorism. He was subsequently handed over to the DSS for investigation and prosecution.

However, a relative of the Nollywood actor told The PUNCH that they had been denied access to him. Read more

Legendary Disney animator Ruthie Tompson who worked on Snow White dies aged 111 (Metro)

Animation legend Ruthie Tompson, who worked on Disney’s first animated feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, has died aged 111.

The artist died ‘peacefully in her sleep’ at her home at the Motion Picture and Television Fund in Woodland Hills, California, on Sunday, according to Variety.

Disney’s co-executive chairman Bob Iger said in a statement: ‘Ruthie was a legend among animators, and her creative contributions to Disney — from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to The Rescuers —- remain beloved classics to this day.

‘While we will miss her smile and wonderful sense of humour, her exceptional work and pioneering spirit will forever be an inspiration to us all.’ Read more

Blackfishing is a word used to accuse someone of pretending to be black or mixed-race.

ICJ rejects Kenya case in Somalia maritime border row (BBC)

The UN’s top court has ruled largely in favour of Somalia in its long-running dispute with Kenya over their maritime border.

Kenya previously accused the International Court of Justice of bias and said it will not accept the ruling.

The case concerned a 38,000 sq mile (100,000 sq km) triangle in the Indian Ocean that is thought to be rich in oil and gas.

The dispute has been at the heart of a diplomatic row between the neighbours. Read more

Brazil’s Bolsonaro accused of ‘crimes against humanity’ at ICC (Guardian)

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was accused Tuesday of “crimes against humanity” at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for his alleged role in the destruction of the Amazon, the first case seeking to explicitly link deforestation to loss of life.

Planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions from burning and industrial-scale agriculture in the Amazon are higher than the total annual emissions of Italy or Spain. Deforestation in the region already releases more CO2 than the rest of the Amazon can absorb.

Austrian environmental justice campaigners Allrise filed the official complaint at The Hague-based court Tuesday morning. They asked for legal proceedings against Bolsonaro and his administration for actions “directly connected to the negative impacts of climate change around the world”.

The complaint accuses the Brazilian leader of waging a widespread campaign resulting in the murder of environmental defenders and of endangering the global population through emissions caused by deforestation. Read more

Irish author Sally Rooney in Israel boycott row (BBC)

Irish author Sally Rooney is at the centre of a controversy after refusing to allow her new book to be translated into Hebrew by an Israeli company.

The acclaimed writer said it was in support of calls to boycott Israel over its policies towards the Palestinians.

She said it would “be an honour” to have Beautiful World, Where Are You translated into Hebrew by a company which shared her political position.

A senior Israeli minister said such boycotts were a form of anti-Semitism. Read more

Brooklyn has told Kyrie Irving he can’t be a part-time Net.

The All-Star point guard has refused to get a COVID-19 vaccine, and the Nets announced Tuesday that he won’t be part of the team until he does. In essence, get vaxxed or get gone.

“Given the evolving nature of the situation and after thorough deliberation, we have decided Kyrie Irving will not play or practice with the team until he is eligible to be a full participant,” Brooklyn general manager Sean Marks said in a statement Tuesday morning.

“Kyrie has made a personal choice, and we respect his individual right to choose. Currently the choice restricts his ability to be a full-time member of the team, and we will not permit any member of our team to participate with part-time availability.” Read more

Indian Wells: Andy Murray prepares to face Alexander Zverev in third round (BBC)

Andy Murray says he will be “right in there” against Alexander Zverev as they prepare to face at Indian Wells – but only if he brings his A-game.

The Briton, 34, takes on the German world number four in the third round in California on Tuesday night.

4 Nigerian cyclists get World Track Cycling championship invite (Vanguard)

Four Nigerian female cyclists have been invited by the French Cycling Federation, FCF, to participate in the 2021 World Track Cycling Championships taking place in Roubaix, France.

Technical Director of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, CFN, Bashir Mohammed who disclosed this in Abuja said the cyclists are Ese Ukpeseraye, Yekeen Tawakalt, Ayuba Grace and Samuel Mary.

Mohammed who doubles as the secretary general of the Confederation of African Cycling, CAC, said the world championship would run from October 20 to 24.

He added that the Nigerian representatives will compete in four events namely 500m Time Trials, Individual Pursuits, Team Sprints and Team Pursuits. Read more

Manchester United outcast Sergio Romero finally finds new club in Venezia (Metro)

Sergio Romero has signed for Italian side Venezia, finally agreeing a deal with a new club after leaving Manchester United in June.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper did not play at all for the Red Devils last season, being third choice behind David De Gea and Dean Henderson.

The Argentina international spent six years at Old Trafford, making just seven Premier League appearances in that time and 61 in all competitions.

He last played for United in August 2020 in a Europa League win over FC Copenhagen. Read more
