The Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry probing allegations of human rights abuses against men of the disbanded police Special Anti-Robbery Squad on Tuesday dismissed a petition by one Paschal Bonu, who is seeking to enforce a N300m court judgment against the SARS.

The retired Justice Doris Okuwobi-led panel dismissed Bonu’s petition while ruling on the preliminary objection raised by the police counsel, Joseph Ebosereme, who described the petition as an abuse of court processes.

No sooner than the case was mentioned and the petitioner mounted the witness stand than Ebosereme told the panel that he would be objecting to the hearing of the petition by the panel on the basis that the case was a subject of an appeal, currently pending before the Supreme Court. Read more

Lagos Assembly confirms nominees for LG Service Commission (Nation)

Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday confirmed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s nominees for the state’s Local Government Service Commission.

Those confirmed by the Assembly include: the Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Kamal Abiodun Baiyewu, Engr. Abiodun Abimbola Orekoya, Mr. Ahmed Seriki, Hon. Taofeek Adaranijo and the Vice Chairman of the APC in the state, Hon. Hakeem Bamgbala.

The nominees appeared before the House for screening then confirmation.

Commenting during the confirmation, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa urged them to take a cue from the way they were commended by the lawmakers, who ought to ask them questions. Read more

One feared killed, scores injured as hoodlums clash in Ibadan (Tribune)

There was pandemonium in Wesley College area of Ibadan, Oyo State capital on Tuesday when hoodlums in their numbers reportedly unleashed terror on residents, leading to the alleged killing of one person while scores were injured.

The national president of Soludero Hunters Association, Oba Wahab Ajijola Anabi made this disclosure while speaking with journalists in Ibadan.

He explained that hoodlums have taken over Labo, Orita Aperin, Elekuro, Kosodo, Oranyan areas of Ibadan where they used dangerous weapons such as animal bones, bottles, pistols, nails and clubs to attack residents of the affected areas. Read more

Senate confirms Yakubu as INEC Chairman (Punch)

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission for the second term of five years.

The confirmation followed the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on INEC, led by Senator Kabiru Gaya, which submitted its report at plenary and recommended Yakubu for confirmation. Read more

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has refuted social media reports that he said: “Nigeria is at the mercy of Boko Haram.”

At a meeting with online publishers on Tuesday in Lagos, the minister described the reports as “social media abuse, sheer fabrication and abuse of the platform.”

“While in Makurdi, Benue State, on an official visit, I was asked by journalists to comment on the killing of farmers in Borno State over the weekend.

“I said terrorism is a global problem that requires collaborative efforts among nations to combat.

Court jails Swedish-Nigerian woman for child trafficking (Nation)

A Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state has sentenced a Swedish-Nigerian woman, Stephany Isaksson, 43, to four years imprisonment for child kidnapping.

The court presided over by Justice Fatun Riman jailed the woman on a two count charges of receiving a one-year-six- months old baby by means of fraud from one Uduak who is at large for purpose of exploitation.

The offence is contrary to section 13(2)(b) of trafficking in persons (prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act 2015 and for obtaining the possession of the baby knowing that the baby will be subject to exploitation contrary to section 21 of the Trafficking in persons (prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act. Calls for sack of service chiefs are ‘out of place’- Presidency (Guardian)

Nigerian Government has said the demands for the sack of service chiefs is not the solution to the security challenges in the country.

“The clamour for the sack is out of place considering that the president is not subject to the opinion of opposition political party which has clamoured for this all the time,” presidential spokesman Garba Shehu said in an interview on Arise TV on Tuesday.

Kannywood actress, Rahama Sadau, has described the killings in northern Nigeria by terrorists as “barbarous”.

The actress, who made this known in a string of tweets on Tuesday, called on Federal Government and all relevant authorities to rise up to the responsibility of protecting lives and property in the country.

Man ‘locked up by his mum for 28 years’ is finally rescued (Metro)

A woman, 70, has been accused of imprisoning her son for 28 years after a malnourished man was found in a flat in Sweden.

The man, now in his 40s, was found lying under a blanket on the floor by a relative on Sunday. He was described as having almost no teeth, several sores and injuries, and substandard language skills. His mother is accused of having held him captive since he was 12, when he was taken out of school, Expressen reports.

Stockholm prosecutor Emma Olsson confirmed the man is now being treated in hospital. The relative who found the man said the flat had smelled ‘rotten’ and had ‘urine, dirt and dust’ covering the floor. She told Expressen: ‘I’m in shock, brokenhearted, but at the same time relieved. Read more

Pandemic exacerbates global fight against AIDS (VOA)

Tuesday is World AIDS Day, with organizations around the world highlighting the need to support those living with and affected by HIV, the virus that causes the disease, while also remembering those who have died.

This year’s event comes amid the global coronavirus pandemic, which UNAIDS says has made it more difficult for those living with HIV to access health care and other services while also highlighting issues such as inequality and stigma.

The agency is calling on governments to boost investment and action on HIV and other pandemics.  It says if there were better health and social safety nets in place, the world would have been better able to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Read more

French interior minister outlines proposals for police reform amid outcry (France24)

Amid a wave of anger and street protests in France over police violence, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin outlined proposals for police reform before a National Assembly committee on Monday evening.

President Emmanuel Macron’s ruling party earlier agreed to completely rewrite a draft plan that would have curbed the right to film police officers in action, after large protests over the weekend drew 133,000 people nationwide and 46,000 in Paris alone, according to the official count or many more according to union estimates.

The rallies followed the publication of video footage of the brutal beating of a Black man by three police officers earlier this month, an incident that Macron branded as “shameful” for France. Four officers were charged over the beating on Monday. Read more

She was only 14 when she was groomed to have virtual sex with an older man she met on social media.

She had no idea he was recording it and that she would spend years suffering the fallout online and in her real life.

“It [the video] is like the head of the hydra. You cut one off, and then there’s three more,” said the woman, who is from a large Canadian city and whose identity is being concealed out of concern for her safety.

She recalls what it was like, as a frightened teenage girl, to realise the video of her was publicly available.

“I honestly thought every single day was going to be either the last day I’m alive or the last day I have any social life at all because it felt like I was on the precipice of my life — exploding every day,” she said. Read more

Google Chrome will stop running on millions of Windows PCs in 2022 (Metro)

Google’s hugely popular Chrome browser will stop running on millions of PCs around the world in a little over a year’s time.

The tech giant will stop supporting the Windows 7 operating system in January 2022, meaning users will have to upgrade to Windows 10. The deadline has actually been extended by six months due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Support for the older OS, which was launched by Microsoft in 2009, will end sometime around January 15, 2022. The reason for dropping support is that Microsoft itself doesn’t support Windows 7 any more.

That means that anyone still using the older software could be putting themselves at risk of security vulnerabilities. Read more

Drake, Bad Bunny, Dua Lipa and The Weeknd are among the most-streamed artists of 2020, according to figures from Spotify.

Drake was the most popular artist in the UK, reclaiming the number one position from Ed Sheeran.

The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights was the most-played song in the UK, while Lewis Capaldi’s Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent was the top album.

Nigeria’s Oshoala nominated for UEFA Fans’ Women’s Team of the Year (Punch)

Super Falcons captain, Asisat Oshoala, is one of the fifty nominees for the UEFA Fans’ Women’s Team of the Year’ for 2020.

The list was revealed by Europe’s football governing body UEFA on Tuesday.

Chelsea unrelenting in pursuit of Chukwueze (Nation)

Pablo Matera stripped of Argentina captaincy for ‘discriminatory and xenophobic’ posts (BBC)

Pablo Matera has been stripped of the Argentina captaincy and suspended along with two team-mates for “discriminatory and xenophobic” comments in historical social media posts.

The Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) says it “strongly repudiates” comments made by Matera as well as Guido Petti and Santiago Socino between 2011 and 2013.

The UAR said it met “urgently” after the posts resurfaced.

The trio were due to play Australia in the final Tri-Nations game on Saturday.
