Lagos court jails ex-convict for defrauding US varsity of $1.4m (Punch)

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Tuesday sentenced a U.S. ex-convict, Kolawole Erinle, to 12 years in jail for defrauding Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences  of $1.4m.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Justice Rahman Oshodi sentenced Erinle to five years jail term on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, retention of proceeds of criminal conduct and obtaining money under false pretence.

Oshodi held that the defendant and his company were guilty as charged and that the prosecution had effectively proved the case against them beyond every reasonable doubt. Read more

Lagos driver stabs LASTMA official, strips self naked (Punch)

A yet-to-be-identified Lagos driver has allegedly stabbed an officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority after a disagreement at the Costain Roundabout area of Lagos.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident occurred on Sunday after the driver was accosted by the officers for allegedly obstructing the road with his vehicle.

In a video that went viral online, the driver was seen stripping himself naked inside his commercial yellow bus with number plate LSR 966 YE. Read more

Pathologists conclude autopsy on Mohbad’s corpse, police await result (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command on Thursday confirmed the conclusion of an autopsy on the remains of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, also known as Mohbad.

The Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the developments to our correspondent in an exclusive telephone interview on Thursday.

“Mohbad’s corpse has been exhumed today (Thursday), and medical experts have successfully concluded the autopsy on the corpse tonight. Our concern as the police is the outcome of the autopsy, as we’re expecting the result soon,” Hundeyin said. Read more 

Power-drunk Lagos policemen invade Lekki shop, arrest attendant, plot charges (Punch)

A team of policemen attached to the Ikoyi Police Station has been accused of assaulting the worker of a clothing shop, Dash Me Stores at Muiz Banire Street, in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the officers who were led by one Inspector Funmi Odukoya carried out the act on the instruction of a dissatisfied client, Juwareto Okaisabor.

It was learnt that Okaisabor had bought a fairly used Fiendi designer bag in a charity auction put up by the store in October 2022. Read more 

3 arrested as hunter shoots 14-year-old girl dead (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested three yet-to-be-identified suspects as a drunken hunter allegedly shot dead a 14-year-old girl.

A resident, James Joel, who spoke with PUNCH Metro on Wednesday, said the incident happened on Tuesday night.

Details leading to the unfortunate incident were still sketchy as of press time, but our correspondent learnt that the yet-to-be-identified girl was shot dead by the hunter who was on a bike in the Ayinla Akera area of Orile Agege, Lagos. Read more

Islamic teacher jailed 21 years for sexually assaulting pupil (Punch)

An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Tuesday sentenced an Islamic teacher, Obasanmi Waliyullahi, to 21 years imprisonment for attempting to commit sexual assault by penetration and indecent treatment of his 15-year-old pupil, (name withheld).

The convict was handed down the sentence by Justice Rahman Oshodi following his guilty plea to the two amended charges of attempted sexual assault by penetration and indecent treatment of a child.

The judge convicted and sentenced Waliyullahi to 14 years imprisonment for the first count of attempting to commit sexual assault by penetration and seven years for the second count of indecent treatment of a child. Read more

NSCDC operatives intercept rice smugglers in Lagos (Punch)

Three suspected smugglers of foreign rice have been arrested by the operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

In a statement signed by the Corps Spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale on Friday, the suspects were arrested by the Commandant-General’s Marine monitoring team, Western Command, Eleko Beach, Lagos.

They were said to have been arrested based on intelligence tip-off.

The suspects who were coming from Cotonou, Benin Republic aboard three wooden boats were intercepted by operatives of the NSCDC marine operations who were on red alert patrol. Read more 

One in police custody after robbing PUNCHman in Lagos (Punch)

A PUNCH Newspaper cameraman, Elliot Ovadje, was on Monday robbed by some armed robbers under the pedestrian bridge at Mile 12 area of Lagos State while he was on his way home from an assignment.

Ovadje narrated that he had gone to Kosofe in Ketu to take some photographs of the collapsed building when he was accosted by two men, who robbed him of the money he had just withdrawn from an automated teller machine.

He said that after they robbed him, they also wanted to collect his phone from him, but that he struggled with them and was able to prevent them from robbing him of his phone. Read more

Police arrest 2 for stealing metal drainage covers (Guardian)

The Lagos State Police Command said on Tuesday it has arrested two suspects for stealing fabricated metal drainage covers.

The Police in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), said its officers caught the men in the act while on patrol.

“Around 5:00 a.m. today, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on patrol of Freedom Way, Ikate, Lekki, arrested two suspects stealing fabricated metal drainage covers in the area,” the statement read in part. Read more

Man gets life imprisonment for defiling 4-year-old girl (Nation)

An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Thursday sentenced a 42-year-old Chief Security Officer of a company, Daniel Okon, to life imprisonment for defiling a four-year-old girl.

Justice Abiola Soladoye held that the prosecution has been able to prove the offence of defilement against the convict beyond reasonable doubt.

Okon was charged before the court on a one count charge of child defilement contrary to Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015. Read more
