Ex-Liverpool midfielder Emre Can ‘shocked and angry’ by Juventus’ Champions League snub (Metro)

Former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has expressed his shock and anger after Maurizio Sarri omitted him from Juventus’ official Champions League squad on Tuesday.

Champions League rules dictate that all clubs must select eight ‘homegrown’ players who have developed in their country between the ages of 15-18 at least, as well as four from their academy.

Third-choice goalkeeper Carlo Pinsoglio is the only academy-trained player in Juventus’ squad meaning Sarri could only name 22 senior players for the Champions League group stages, resulting in both Can and Mario Mandzukic being left out.

That decision has infuriated Can, who claims that he stayed at Juventus despite interest from PSG after being given assurances that he would be eligible to play in the Champions League. Read more
