N2.9t electricity subsidy unsustainable, says FG (Nation)

The Federal Government on Friday insisted that the payment of N2.9trillion for electricity subsidy in 2024 is no longer sustainable.

The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu stated this while giving explanations on the April 2024 Supplementary Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) released on Wednesday .

FG to launch new national ID with payment, social service delivery capabilities (Tribune)

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS), has launched an innovative identity solution with payment functionality for all types of social and financial services to be powered by AfriGO, a National domestic card scheme.

A statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications of NIMC, Kayode Adegoke said the National ID card, layered with verifiable National Identity features, is backed by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, which mandates NIMC to enrol and issue a General Multipurpose card (GMPC) to Nigerians and legal residents. 

This card according to the statement will address the demand for physical identification enabling cardholders to prove their identity, access government and private social services, facilitate financial inclusion for disenfranchised Nigerians, empower citizens, as well as encourage increased participation in nation-building. Nnamdi Kanu asks court to reinstate his bail revoked in 2017 (Channels)

The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu has asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to restore his bail that was revoked in 2017.

In a motion, the IPOB leader asked the court to set aside his bail revocation. The motion was filed by his lead counsel Alloy Ejimakor.

In the motion, Kanu’s lawyer said his client was falsely accused of jumping bail.

Ejimakor said Kanu fled nigeria when security operatives allegedly invaded his home in Abia State in an attempt to kill him. Read more

The Kano State Police Command on Friday said its operatives arrested a total of 120 suspected criminals within the State in the month of March.

Spokesperson of the Command, Abdullahi Kiyawa, in a statement, Friday evening noted that the arrested persons include 15 armed robbery, 4 kidnapping suspects as well as 10 suspected drug dealers.

2 die in Osun road crash (Punch)

Two passengers on Friday lost their lives in a lone accident that occurred at Balogun Village near Ikire, Osun State.

It was gathered that the bus involved was said to be heading to Lagos from Ekiti State.

First UN food aid in months arrives in Sudan’s Darfur as famine looms (AlJazeera)

The United Nations has begun distributing food in Sudan’s war-ravaged Darfur region for the first time in months amid warnings of impending famine caused by a yearlong war and lack of access to food aid.

The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) said two aid convoys crossed the border from Chad in late March, carrying food and nutrition assistance for about 250,000 people for a month.

Food distribution is now under way in West and Central Darfur, the WFP’s Sudan spokeswoman, Leni Kinzli, said on Friday. Read more

New York City shakes as 4.8 magnitude earthquake hits US north-east (Guardian)

An earthquake shook the densely populated New York City metropolitan area on Friday morning, the US Geological Survey said, with residents reporting they felt rumbling across the eastern seaboard in what is a relatively rare event for the region.

The government agency reported a quake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, with a preliminary location for the epicenter given as near Lebanon, New Jersey, and later as near Tewksbury and Whitehouse Station, all three of which are in Hunterdon county roughly in a 10-mile radius.

People reported feeling the quake in the states of Connecticut and Massachusetts, with the Weather Channel reporting that it was noticeable in Boston and residents in Philadelphia reporting they felt it, too. Tremors lasting for several seconds were felt more than 200 miles away near the New Hampshire border. Read more
