Policeman beaten comatose for shooting man in Lagos (Vanguard)

A police officer was weekend beaten to a state of coma by a mob, after he shot a man in the head, during an altercation at Alapere, Mile 12 area of Lagos.

As at yesterday, Vanguard reliably gathered that the cop, Opawoye Adetunji, a Superintendent of Police and the Divisional Crime Officer at the Shagamu Road Police division in Lagos, was yet to be out of coma.

His victim, whose identity was yet to be ascertained as at time of writing this report, was also unconscious at an undisclosed hospital where doctors are  said to be battling to save his life. Read more

Police arrest fake doctor, 2 Kidnap Suspects in Lagos (Independent)

Two suspects who belonged to a six-man kidnap gang have been arrested for allegedly masterminding the kidnap of one Alvin Onuoha in Ajah, Lagos and demanding $30,000 as ransom for the release of the victim.

The suspects, Eze Douglas and Vincent Uchenna who had confessed to be involved in cybercrimes (also known as Yahoo Boys) were paraded at the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja on Monday by the Commissioner of Police, CP Edgal Imohimi.

The command also arrested one Abdulrahman Mohammed on allegation that he impersonates as a medical doctor. Read more

Police arrest 10 suspected cultists in Ojo (Nation)

The police have arrested nine suspected cultists said to be terrorising Amukoko in Ojo, Lagos. One of them, Chidubem Nwachukwu, 27, was arrested on April 8, around 9:45pm.

It was gathered that Nwachukwu, a resident of 7, Ago Street, Ikotun, was seen on Fagbemi Street, Amukoko and was intercepted after policemen said he was suspicious.

Upon searching the suspect, the police discovered a locally-made revolver pistol and one unexpended cartridge.

Lagos Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal said the case was transferred to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Ikeja, where the suspect confessed to being a member of the Vikings cult group. Read more

UK visa applicant bags three years for lying about marital status (Punch)

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Tuesday sentenced a UK visa applicant, Kolawole Viyon, to three years’ imprisonment for giving false information about his marital status.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission had arraigned Viyon for allegedly lying about his marital status.

Justice Mojisola Dada, who gave the ruling, said the accused was guilty as charged. Following a plea bargain entered into with the prosecution, the judge, however, gave Viyon an option of N300,000 fine. Read more

OAU graduate wanted by EFCC over financial crime (Independent)

Justice Mojisola Dada of an Ikeja Special Offences Court on Tuesday discharged and acquitted a surety, Taofeek Olalekan, a senior civil servant, of giving false information to a public officer.

Olalekan had stood surety to a friend of his son called ‘Uzoamaka’ who was wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for unspecified financial crimes.

Uzoamaka,  a banking and finance student at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, bailed him out of compassion in 2014 by Olalekan, had been at large and Olalekan was unable to produce him before the authorities. Read more
