Family raise alarm over death of son in NDLEA custody (Guardian)

The family of Kenneth Ike Ayogu, 29, a patent medicine dealer at Narayi in Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State has accused officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of torturing their son to death in custody.

They insisted that he was severely tortured to death inside their cell after he was arrested on October 13, 2022, for being in possession of a pentazocine injection.

A spokesman for the family, Michael Ayogu, 50, a wine dealer also in Kaduna State lamented that even after his brother’s death under their custody, all efforts the family is making for an autopsy to be carried out have been thwarted by both the police and NDLEA thereby worsening their sorrow.

Giving graphic details of the incident that led to the untimely death of his brother, the wine dealer who hails from Amahor-Uwenu, Okpuje in Nsukka LGA of Enugu State said the deceased was in his shop when he was arrested by officials of NDLEA on October 13, 2022, for being in possession of pentazocine injection. Housewife “kills” husband with poison (DailyTrust)

The Borno State Police Command said it has arrested a housewife, Fatima Abubakar, 25, for allegedly killing her husband, Goni Abbah, with poison.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Abdu Umar, who disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri, said that the suspect was arrested on October 19 by men of the command at Anguwan Doki.

Umar said that the victim, who was the Chief Imam of the area, returned from the mosque when the suspect, who was the second wife, allegedly mixed poison in his food.

He explained that as soon as Goni started eating, his condition deteriorated.

According to him, the victim was immediately taken to the State Specialist Hospital where he was given emergency medical attention, but unfortunately, he later died when they returned home. Read more 

Detained industrialist regains freedom (Nation)

An industrialist and Managing Director of Mallison and Partners Ltd, Chief Mallinson Ukatu, has finally regained his freedom six months after he was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

He was released on Friday after meeting the bail conditions granted him by Hon. Justice Lifu of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.

His counsel, Victor Opara (SAN) lauded the leadership of NDLEA for obeying the court directive granting Ukatu bail.

Opara noted that the drug law enforcement agency’s compliance with the court ruling has proved that it is a law-abiding agency. Read more

Residents beg Lagos govt to stop demolition of Ikota Estate structures (Guardian)

The President, Ikota Low Cost Housing Estate Landlords’ Association, Mr. Titus Ewarawon, has called on the state government to stop the demolition of structures within the estate.

“Let them stop the demolition. We have our allocation papers. It is the government that resettled us in Ikota after the demolition of Maroko. So, the allottees and the non- allottees are all Maroko evictees. What we need is for the government to bring development to our community. Our roads are in deplorable condition. We need help from the government,” he stated.

One of the residents and patron of the Landlords’ Association, Mr. I A Onakoya, said that he built his house in Maroko in 1970.  Read more

Education fair: Swiss schools arrive Lagos Nov (Punch)

A number of Switzerland-based post-primary institutions will visit Lagos in November for consultation with parents who are interested in enrolling their wards in Swiss Boarding Schools.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by Director of Swiss Learning, Christophe Clivaz, in collaboration with its consulting firm, Mark Brooks Education, obtained on Saturday.

While disclosing that the event will have Consul General of Switzerland in Lagos, Thomas Schneider, in attendance, Clivaz said the programme would take place at The Wheatbaker Hotel in Ikoyi.

The Presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu today visited the leader of the Pan Socio-Political Group, Afenifere, led by Pa Reuben Fasoranti in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

Federal lawmakers join clamour for Kanu’s release (ThisDay)

The South-east Caucus of the House of Representatives last week, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to show statesmanship and fatherly introspection by ensuring the release of the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, from detention.

The federal lawmakers’ appeal came on the heels of the unanimous decision of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, which discharged the IPOB leader of the terrorism charges brought against him by the federal government.

The killing of the people of the old Eastern Region within the Nigerian Federation had led the then military governor of the region, Lt. Colonel Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, to declare the Republic of Biafra in May 1967. The declaration led to a 30-month civil war, which ended in January 1970 with the Eastern Region returning to Nigeria.

However, secessionist agitation has since resurfaced in the South-east, championed by Kanu through  his Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Read more

Detectives complete investigations into Alec Baldwin Rust shooting (Metro)

The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office has completed its investigation into the fatal shooting on the set of Rust that left cinematographer Halyna Hutchins dead.

Criminal charges against those involved, including Alec Baldwin, may be imminent.

‘Today, District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies received the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s investigative report on the Rust movie set incident,’ Heather Brewer, the spokesperson for Santa Fe’s top prosecutor, said in an email, reported The New York Post.

‘The District Attorney and her team of investigators and prosecutors will now begin a thorough review of the information and evidence to make a thoughtful, timely decision about whether to bring charges.’ Read more 

Zulu king crowned in historic ceremony (BBC)

A new Zulu king has been crowned at a historic event attended by thousands in South Africa’s coastal city of Durban.

King Misuzulu ka Zwelithini was formally acknowledged as monarch by President Cyril Ramaphosa, who gave him a certificate of recognition.

The ceremony was the first Zulu coronation since South Africa became a democracy in 1994.

It ends a long and bitter tussle to find a successor for King Goodwill Zwelithini who died last year.

He was the longest-reigning Zulu monarch, having served on the throne for almost 50 years. Read more

D.H. Peligro, drummer for Dead Kennedys and Red Hot Chili Peppers, dies aged 63 (NME)

D.H. Peligro, drummer for Dead Kennedys and briefly Red Hot Chili Peppers, has died at the age of 63.

In a statement announcing the news, Dead Kennedys revealed that the drummer died “from trauma to the head caused by an accidental fall” at his home in Los Angeles.

They wrote: “Dead Kennedys’ drummer D.H. Peligro passed away in his Los Angeles home yesterday, October 28th. Police on the scene stated that he died from trauma to the head caused by an accidental fall.

“Arrangements are pending and will be announced in the coming days. We ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time. Thank you for your thoughts and words of comfort.” Read more 

Liz Truss’s phone hacked by Russia, UK media reports (RNZ)

The government has been urged to open an investigation into claims former prime minister Liz Truss’s phone was hacked while she was foreign secretary.

The Mail on Sunday reported that private messages between Truss and foreign officials, including about the Ukraine war, fell into foreign hands.

The hack was discovered during the summer Tory leadership campaign but the news was suppressed, the paper said.

The government said it had “robust” cyber-threat protection in place. Read more 

India 2022: Nigeria beat Germany, win bronze (Punch)

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, claimed the bronze medal at the U-17 Women’s World Cup in India today, after defeating Germany 3-2 on penalties.

Flamingos scored first and were up 3-0, before the Germans staged a dramatic comeback late on to tie the losers final 3-3.

The game went into penalties afterwards and the Flamingos were lucky this time around, after losing to Colombia through the shoot-out lottery in the semi-finals.

The Germans scored first in the fifth minute, but it was ruled out after a VAR review, following a foul on Flamingos goalkeeper Faith Omilana. Read more 

Portugal, Costa Rica friendly: Major boost for Peseiro as Ahmed Musa returns from injury (Sun)

Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, will be available for selection ahead of Nigeria’s proposed international friendly matches against Costa Rica and Portugal in November.

Musa was a major doubt for the friendly games after he suffered a broken arm in a Turkish league clash for his club, Sivasspor Külübü on September 18.

The former Leicester City winger underwent surgery a few days later and has since been in rehabilitation.

The injury forced Musa to miss Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Algeria in Oran last month. Read more

 Graham Potter has included teenager Omari Hutchinson in his matchday squad for the first time on Saturday away at Brighton in the Premier League.

The midfielder celebrates his 19th birthday on Saturday and it will be one to remember as he takes his place on the bench at the Amex.

The teenager is already pretty well travelled having started at Chelsea, before moving to Charlton and then to Arsenal in 2015, where he started making a name for himself.

He was on the bench a number of times in the Gunners first team in the Premier League and cup competitions, but never made his debut for the club. Read more

Summerville turns 21 on Sunday and he celebrated his landmark birthday in the most spectacular fashion, scoring in the 89th minute to inflict Liverpool’s first home defeat in the Premier League in front of supporters since April 2017.

While Jurgen Klopp bemoaned his team’s wretched inconsistency, which is threatening to leave them too much to do to qualify for the Champions League, Marsch was overjoyed with Leeds’s brave display that enabled them to win in the Premier League for the first time since August.

Arnold Allen wins UFC main event as Calvin Kattar injures leg (ABC)

English featherweight Arnold Allen picked up the biggest win of his career on Saturday, although it didn’t come in a manner he wanted.

Allen (19-1) picked up his 10th consecutive UFC win inside the Apex in Las Vegas, defeating Calvin Kattar (23-7) via second-round TKO. The 145-pound contest, which headlined UFC Fight Night, extended Allen’s overall win streak to 12. He signed with the UFC in 2015 on a two-fight winning streak.

Allen, 28, looked fantastic in the opening round, but the finish was still an unfortunate one. In the first round, Kattar appeared to suffer an injury to his right leg when he landed awkwardly after a flying knee attempt. He came out for the second round, but quickly fell to the floor after Allen threw a leg kick. 

Afterward, Allen noted that featherweight champ  Alexander Volkanovski was looking for fighters “to make a statement.” Read more
