Farmer discovers newborn baby dumped in Jigawa farm (Guardian)

A farmer, identified simply as Dubore, has found a newborn baby concealed inside a carton, and abandoned it on his farm in Gwaram Local Council of Jigawa State.

The baby was found alive on Sunday morning, September 24, when the farmer was working on his farm.

The Guardian gathered that immediately Debore discovered the baby, he informed the village head of Wurya in Gwaram Tsohuwa about the incident.

Confirming the incident, Personal Assistant to Gwaram Local Council Chairman, Alhaji Tamaji Gwaram, said he was contacted by the village head about the newborn baby. Read more

Nigerian ace singer, Azeez Adeshina Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, has spoken up on the death of his former record label signee, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji aka MohBad, saying the circumstances surrounding his death will be unveiled in due time.

Naira Marley also said he was planning to return to Nigeria to assist the police investigation into Mohbad’s death.

After Mohbad died on September 12 and was buried the next day, Naira Marley and some others, including Sam Larry, were called out for allegedly frustrating him. Read more

Lagos to connect 10,000 youths to private jobs (Nation)

Lagos State, private firms are set to give 10,000 youths jobs to curb unemployment and reduce emigration of skilled professionals, known as “Japa” syndrome.

Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, said the state would capture and employ professionals through job placements in private firms.

Ajigbotafe spoke yesterday at the “One Day Lagos Job Fair”: “Connecting Youths with Job Opportunities,” in Alausa. Read more

Customs arrests 2 for smuggling N6.8m live parrots, hawk (Leadership)

The Seme border command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), on Monday, arrested two persons for allegedly smuggling 63 live African parrots, hawk from Kaduna state, Nigeria to neighbouring Benin Republic.

In a press statement by the public relations officer, Hussein Abdulahi, the birds have a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N6.8 million, saying six of the birds have died due to the trauma of transporting them.

According to the statement made available to LEADERSHIP, the Customs Area Controllers (CAC), Timi Bomodi, will hand over the endangered species to the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) Seme Command for further investigation. Read more

The Senate yesterday, confirmed the appointment of Dr Olayemi Cardoso, as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

It also confirmed the nomination of Mrs Emem Usoro, Mr Muhammad Dattijo, Mr Philip Ikeazor and Dr Bala Bello as the bank’s deputy governors. Their confirmation followed the consideration and approval of a motion moved by Senate Leader, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele (APC-Ekiti Central).

Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a “pause in certain foreign assistance programs” to Gabon, pending a review of the circumstances that led to the ouster of the country’s former leader President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

Blinken said in a statement that the suspension would not affect US government operations in the oil-rich central African nation. The statement did not elaborate on what US-funded programs would be affected or how much money would be placed on hold.

Gabon is the second country to have seen a military takeover following the overthrow of the government in Niger earlier this year. The US also suspended some aid to Niger but has yet to formally determine if what happened was a coup. Read more

Actors in the US have voted in favour of a potential video games strike, raising the prospect of another walkout in Hollywood.

Members of the Sag-Aftra union voted 98% in favour of taking action over the gaming industry agreement that covers voice, motion capture and stunt work.

Actors are already on strike from work for film and TV studios.

The Sicilian Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, who was captured in January this year after three decades on the run, died on Monday in hospital in central Italy, taking to the grave the secrets of his brutal reign.

The 61-year-old had been treated for colon cancer while detained in a high-security jail in L’Aquila but was moved last month to hospital after his condition deteriorated.

Iraq fire: At least 100 killed in blaze at wedding party in Nineveh (BBC)

At least 100 people have died and 150 others injured after a fire broke out at a wedding in northern Iraq, state media has reported.

The bride and the groom are reported to be among the victims, according to local media.

Viktor Sokolov, commander of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in Crimea, has been shown attending a meeting a day after Ukrainian special forces claimed he died in a barrage of missiles.

In video and photographs released by the Russian defence ministry and shown on state television on Tuesday, Sokolov is seen taking part in a video conference with Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu and other top admirals and army chiefs.

Ukraine’s special forces said on Monday that Sokolov was killed in the Russian-annexed peninsula along with 33 other officers in a missile attack on the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in the port of Sevastopol. Read more

Aston Martin: Jessica Hawkins becomes 1st woman to test F1 car since 2018 (BBC)

Britain’s Jessica Hawkins has become the first woman in almost five years to test a Formula 1 car.
