Authorities of the Nigerian Army, on Tuesday announced that it has discharged a female soldier, Private Ruth Ogunleye, who accused a senior officer, Colonel I.B Abdulkareem, of sexual harassment.

Army specifically said the female soldier was eased out of the service on medical ground after the conclusion of its probe, adding that by discharging her, she’s entitled to pension and all other benefits for life.

Daily Trust reports that Ogunleye had in January this year on her TikTok page via @Ogunleyeruthsavage1 accused Col. IB Abdulkareem, Col. G.S Ogor, and Brig. Gen. I.B Solebo, of making her life unbearable. Read more 

Zulum flags off distribution of relief materials to Maiduguri flood victims (NewTelegraph)

The Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has flagged off the distribution of cash and relief materials to victims of the Maiduguri flood that affected nearly 2 million people.

It would be recalled that on 10 September 2024, a flood submerged Maiduguri the Borno state, capital as a result of an overflow of water from Alau Dam. Initial reports indicate severe destruction of homes and infrastructure. The state government has set up a rapid-response team to assess the damages in phases.

Flagging off distribution of relief materials at the Gwange ward of Maiduguri on Tuesday, Governor Babagana Zulum said 5,235 households resident in Gwange 1 in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council will benefit in ng from the initial phase of the exercise. Read more

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says its multiple interest rate hikes last year have helped boost Nigerians’ confidence in the currency naira.

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso stated this at a press briefing on Tuesday at the end of the 297th meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) in Abuja.

Cardoso announced the committee’s decision to further raise Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) which measures interest rates by 50 basis points from 26.75% to 27.25% to tighten inflation rate which stands at 32.15%. Read more 

Police probe alleged killing of three by teenage driver (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has said the teenager responsible for the fatal crash at the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge toll gate in Lagos State in the early hours of Monday will be invited for questioning after he recovers in the hospital.

The accident, which occurred around 1:00 am on Monday, involved two cars carrying approximately eight people. Three young individuals however died on the spot.

A social media user, Dr Love #Drweloveu, who shared details of the incident on Monday via X, said, “18-year-old driver killed 3 of his friends in the accident. Police arrested the remaining 2 survivors. The driver was about 18 years old and without a driver’s licence.” Read more

A canoe accident has claimed four lives in Dikwa, Borno State.

A statement by Public Relations Officer, Borno State Command, ASP Nahum Daso said it received reports at the Dikwa Divisional Police headquarters, that a distressing canoe accident occurred on Monday at about 1530 HRS in the Bakassi community, between Mafa and Dikwa along Maiduguri Road, Borno State.

The incident involved a canoe carrying passengers submerged in floodwaters, leading to the unfortunate loss of four female lives. Read more

The Israeli military continued striking south Lebanon and the country’s eastern Beqaa region overnight, a day after it launched a massive wave of air raids on Lebanon’s deadliest day in decades. It also struck the southern suburbs of Beirut for a fifth time this year.

At least 558 people have been killed and over 1,800 wounded in the two days of attacks, including children.
