The Federal Government has charged the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu , and Senator Bassey Akpan , who represents Akwa Ibom North- East Senatorial District in Akwa Ibom State, with offences bordering on their alleged refusal and negligence to declare their assets to the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property. Emir of Kano calls for use of local language to teach (Nation)

The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, on Wednesday, advised the Federal Government to institute a policy that allows the use of local languages to teach in Nigerian schools. Sanusi, who gave the advice at a two-day Northern Nigeria Traditional Leaders Conference on Out-of-School Children, in Kaduna, said that the use of only English language in teaching has contributed to low educational development in the country. Flood submerges 500 rice farms in Bayelsa (Vanguard)

No fewer than 500 rice farms at Okpotuwari and Ondewari communities in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa, have been submerged by flood, newsmen report. Mr Ezekiel Ogbianko, Chairman, Rice Farmers Association in the state, who inspected the submerged farms on Wednesday, called on the federal and state governments to come to the aid of the affected farmers. Court strikes fraud charges against Innoson Motors’ boss (Nation)

An Ikeja High Court on Wednesday struck out a fraud charge preferred against the chairman of Innoson Motors Nigeria Limited, Innocent Chukuwuma (aka Innoson) by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Justice Olusola Williams struck out the case after EFCC failed to produce Innoson in court to face trial. The EFCC had sued Innoson and his company before the court in January 2018, on charges bordering on fraud,  conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences. Read more

Trump questions UN global warming report (Guardian)

US President Donald Trump said he has yet to read a UN report warning of global warming-caused chaos unless drastic action is taken and added that he is skeptical. The landmark report released Monday said that time is running out to avert climate-induced disaster. Christian bakers in Northern Ireland who refused to make a cake decorated with the words “Support Gay Marriage” on Wednesday won their appeal in the UK’s highest court. The McArthur family, owners of the Ashers bakery in Belfast, won their Supreme Court appeal against a 2015 ruling that found they had sexually discriminated against customer and gay rights activist Gareth Lee. A high-ranking Russian Orthodox cleric on Wednesday warned that protests would erupt in Ukraine if the country’s Orthodox Church is granted independence from Moscow. The remarks came as the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, considered the spiritual leader of global Orthodoxy, was expected to decide on granting independence to Ukraine’s Orthodox Church. Illicit Drugs: Man jailed three months in Ekiti (Nation)

A Federal High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday sentenced one Ibrahim Taofeek to three months imprisonment over alleged possession of illicit drugs. Counsel from the National Drug Laws Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), Mr. Charles Nwagua told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 10 at Dadinkowa village along ABUAD Road, Ado-Ekiti. He alleged that the defendant, on the said date, without lawful authority possessed 500 grammes of Cannabis Sativa, a Narcotic drugs similar to cocaine Heroin and LSD. Read more

Woman drugs, ties down 35-year-old son for ‘loitering’ (Punch)

A Kenyan woman has been arrested over allegations that she drugged her 35-year-old son before she tied him down to a post in their house to prevent him from relating with other unemployed young people in their village of Eb’biba in Khusikulu Wemilabi, Vihiga County. It was alleged the woman hired a doctor, who administered the sleep-inducing drug to her son. Read more
