FG okays 18-year age limit for WAEC, NECO (Nation)
The federal government has banned individuals below the age of 18 from sitting for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO).
The announcement was made by the minister of education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, during an interview on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics” programme.
He also noted that the same restriction applies to candidates sitting the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), clarifying that this is not a new policy. Read more
Borno commissioner dies in his room (DailyTrust)
The Commissioner for Finance in Borno State, Ahmed Ali Ahmed, is dead.
Details of his death are still sketchy, but sources familiar with the incident told our correspondent that the commissioner died inside his room on Monday morning.
The deceased was said to have exceeded the time he usually comes out in the morning.

The legal team representing the family of the late Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has expressed concern over what it described as sensitive information on the death of the deceased being released to the public.
One of the heads of the team, Taiwo Odumosu, in a statement obtained by PUNCH Metro on Sunday said such information should be made available to the police instead of the public.
He also appealed to the public to come forward with any information that could aid in the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death. Read more

A suspected kidnapper, Tosin Oke, also known as “Old Soldier,” who was part of a gang that abducted an oil magnate on Ado Road in Ajah months ago, has revealed how he spent his share of the ransom on his children’s education and other household expenses, while expressing deep regret for his involvement in the crime.
Oke, who spoke in Pidgin English, recounted, “They gave me $1,700, and when I exchanged it at the Bureau De Change, I received N1.8 million. I used part of it for my children’s school fees, feeding, and saved the rest in my account. I regret getting involved in this; I’m not even sure if I was bewitched into joining them. Police remain resolute to rid Nigeria of criminal elements – Egbetokun (Channels)
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to rid the nation of criminal elements trying to disrupt peace and security of the country.
Egbetokun spoke shortly after handing over rescued medical students of the Universities of Jos and Maiduguri, who were abducted in Benue State a week ago, to their respective Vice Chancellors in Abuja on Sunday.

Gunmen kill middle-aged woman in Benue (Punch)
Gunmen have shot and killed a middle-aged woman identified as Theresa Awuhe in Makurdi, the capital city of Benue State.
The woman was said to be returning from her shop on Saturday night when hoodlums ambushed her around the Villa suite and shot her dead.
According to a source, nothing was taken from her as her assailants fled after killing her. Read more

There was chaos in Wuse market, Abuja, on Monday afternoon, leading traders to close their shops, with visitors running out of the facility.
The development comes a day after a clash between the police and members of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), better known as Shiites.

The Minister of Women’s Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has condemned a young woman, reportedly a social media content creator, for using her mentally unstable mother for personal gain in a viral video.
The video, which has sparked outrage online, shows the young woman filming and engaging with her mother, who appears visibly unwell and unkempt.

Detained Ghanaian migrant dies at Brazil airport (AfricaNews)
A 39-year-old Ghanaian migrant has died while being detained at Guarulhos International Airport in São Paulo, Brazil.
The man passed away on August 13 after receiving medical care at the airport. The cause of death is yet to be disclosed.
The migrant was among a group of “inadmissible travellers” held in a restricted area of the airport because they lacked the necessary documentation or visas to enter Brazil, according to a report by Reuters. Read more

Alien: Romulus has become Hollywood’s second biggest film of the year at the mainland China box office, following a strong second weekend hold.
The film picked up RMB140 million ($19.7 million) between Friday and Sunday in China, according to data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway. That compares favorably with its $26.2 million opening weekend and gives it a cumulative of RMB523 ($73.7 million) since releasing on Aug. 16.
Among Hollywood import titles in 2024, the running total is beaten only by (Chinese-backed) Godzilla v Kong which amassed $134 million. Read more

Uber fined €290m by Dutch authorities for transferring European driver data to the US (Euronews)
Uber has been fined €290 million in the Netherlands for transferring drivers’ personal data to the United States.
The Dutch Data Protection Agency (DPA) found that Uber collected “sensitive information” about its European drivers, such as taxi licenses, location data, and even medical data and retained it on US servers.
Uber made the transfers to its US databases without “appropriately safeguard[ing] the data with regard to those transfers,” the DPA added. Read more

Heritage Auctions said the New York Yankee slugger’s jersey went for a record-breaking $24.12 million after a bidding war that lasted over six hours when it went on the block in Dallas. The buyer wishes to remain anonymous, Heritage said.
The amount that the jersey sold for topped fellow Yankee Mickey Mantle’s 1952 rookie card, which the Dallas-based auction house sold for $12.6 million in 2022. Read more
Dutch GP: Haas can leave Netherlands after Uralkali payment (ESPN)
The Haas F1 team has been given clearance to leave the Netherlands for the Italian Grand Prix after former sponsor Uralkali confirmed payment of outstanding money was owed.
Haas’ trucks were held at the Zandvoort circuit overnight after the Dutch Grand Prix while Uralkali waited to receive $9 million from the American team.
The money had been sent over the weekend after Uralkali had sent bailiffs to the paddock.
Haas had been ordered to pay its former title partner the money after cutting its sponsorship short early in March 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Read more
