In a surprising turn of events, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, has withdrawn his support from a controversial wedding ceremony planned for 100 female orphans in his constituency.

The girls are said to be orphaned IDPs in Niger State.

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have invaded a State High Court sitting in Ilaro, Ogun State, arresting two defendants.

The committee’s chairman, Hon Chinedu Ogah, said this in an interaction with reporters at the National Assembly in Abuja on Tuesday, May 14.

He said that the trust fund would mandate the three tiers of government where a statutory amount would be deducted from local, state, and federal governments, for this purpose. Read more

Suspect arrested in failed Plateau bank robbery (Channels)

A suspect who tried to rob one of the banks in the Dadinkowa area of the Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State has been apprehended.

The suspect, currently in police custody, was apprehended by neighbourhood vigilance when he bolted from the bank premises after the failed robbery attempt on Monday.

CUSTECH kidnapping: 6 more students rescued, 4 still missing — Kogi govt (Tribune)

The Kogi State Government disclosed on Tuesday that six more students of the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) Osara had been rescued, bringing the total number of kidnapped students rescued to twenty, while four students are yet to be found.

Kingsley Femi Fanwo, Hon. Commissioner for Information and Communications, made this known in a press statement.

According to him, the fierce gun battle between security agents and the kidnappers forced the kidnappers to succumb to superior firepower and abandon the kidnapped students, as some of the kidnappers escaped with severe injuries. Read more

Court remands Lagos father for allegedly defiling own 13-yr-old daughter (Vanguard)

A Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, remanded a 58-year-old man, Joseph Gamor in Awarjigoh Correctional centre for allegedly defiling his 13-year-old daughter.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Patrick Adekomaiya refused to take his plea.

Adekomaiya ordered the defendant to be remanded until July 29, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). Read more

Military confirms killing of soldiers in Katsina, says scores of terrorists neutralised (DailyTrust)

The military high command, on Tuesday, confirmed killing of four soldiers attached to the Operation Hadarin Daji.

Daily Trust had reported how the terrorists attacked a military camp in Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State on Sunday, killing soldiers and injuring 11 others in the process.

Reacting to our correspondent’s enquiry on Tuesday, the Director, Defence Media Operations, Edward Buba, clarified that the military recorded four casualties contrary to five reported in the media. Read more

A British woman has spoken about how she saved her sister’s life when she was attacked by a crocodile.

Georgia Laurie, 31, punched the reptile in the face when it attacked her twin Melissa when they went for a swim in a lagoon in Puerto Escondido, Mexico.

8 dead, 37 hospitalised in severe bus crash in Florida (NBC)

Eight people are dead and another eight are critically injured after a bus overturned and crashed early Tuesday morning in Florida, officials said.

The “severe accident with fatalities” unfolded along Florida State Road 40 at Rainbow Springs Boulevard at around 6:45 a.m., the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol said.

Eight people were killed and 37 hospitalized — eight of whom are critically injured, the Florida Highway Patrol told NBC affiliate WESH of Orlando. Read more

France to send extra military aid to Ukraine shortly, says Elysee (StraitsTimes)

France will deliver extra military aid to Ukraine in coming days and weeks, the Elysee said on Tuesday, after President Emmanuel Macron spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

“The President of the Republic reiterated France’s determination to provide all the necessary support… He was also able to detail the deliveries for the coming days and weeks in support of the Ukrainian military effort,” it said in a statement.
