Fire disaster averted at MMIA as tanker spills petrol on motorway (ThisDay)

Vehicular traffic came to standstill yesterday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos when a 42 feet truck, laden with 33, 000 litres of petrol fell and spilled content on the link road connecting the domestic terminals to the international wing of the airport.

The road was blocked for hours, creating fear that the highly flammable product could ignite fire and gut some part of the airport, located few meters to the headquarters of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Forte Oil Filling Station, the Head officer of Arik Air and about 20 meters to the General Aviation Terminal (GAT), known as MMIA Terminal 1.

Barber jailed 20 years for defiling 12-year-old neighbour (Punch)

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Friday sentenced a 38-year-old barber, Jobi Kayode, to 20 years in prison for defiling his 12-year-old neighbour.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo sentenced Kayode after finding him guilty of a charge of defilement on the strength of the complainant’s testimony and the medical evidence.

“The prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and I hereby convict him on the offence of defilement, as charged.

“The instances of rape have become prevalent in our society and it is almost becoming an epidemic. The defilement of a 12-year-old neighbour, who trusted him as her neighbour, is heinous. Read more

Lagos C&S leader bemoans insecurity (Punch)

The Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Cherubim and Seraphim Unification Church of Nigeria, Dr Joseph Adagba, has decried the security challenges facing the country.

Adagba, who praised the government for making efforts to address the situation, urged Nigerians to be cautious and vigilant when travelling.

He spoke during the sixth annual general conference and thanksgiving of the church at the Praying Band of the C & S Church in Mushin, Lagos. Read more

Five houses, several shanties burnt in Lagos fire (Punch)

No fewer than five houses and several shanties were burnt in a fire incident at Ebute Meta area of Lagos on Friday.

Our correspondents gathered that the fire started around 12noon from an electric pole at Okobaba by Jebba Street and spread to adjoining Kano, Coates and Tapa streets.

Eyewitnesses said gas cylinders stored in some of the houses escalated the fire. Read more

Governors reply Miyetti Allah: You cant’s force us to donate land to herdsmen (Punch)

Governors from the South-West, South-South, South-East and the Middle Belt have vowed they will not donate lands in their regions for herdsmen settlements despite the latest threat by herdsmen under the aegis of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore.

The National President of the herdsmen group, Alhaji Abdullahi Bodejo, in a statement last weekend said governors who wanted peace in their states must establish herdsmen settlements.

“You are a governor and you want to enjoy peace in your state, you don’t need any long meeting, just create a particular area for the Fulani and equip them with modern facilities,” Bodejo said. Read more

OPay gets CBN approval for international money transfer (Vanguard)

OPay, a provider of payment, ride-hailing, food delivery and loan services, has been given approval by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to commence international money transfer.

With the approval, OPay will start facilitating remittance B2B, B2P and P2P remittance services into Nigeria. This is coming on the heels of the earlier announced $50 million fundraised from major venture capitalist some months ago.

“The plan is to distort the remittance space and ensure that international money transfer into Nigeria is safer, faster and more affordable” according to Kunle Olamuyiwa, Director, Remittances Services at OPay. Read more

As Nigerians scramble for buy every grain of rice in the market (local or foreign), and the prices rising to N24, 000 and N28, 000 per 50kg bag; indications are that the price would nosedive before the Christmas.

Coming months after the price of the commodity skyrocketed as a result of the closure of Nigeria’s land borders by the Federal Government farmers and millers of rice across the country say they will soon flood the markets with rice and drastically cut the price following a bumper harvest.

Musa scores brace in Al Nassr’s cup win (Punch)

Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, scored a brace as Al Nassr thrashed Afif Club 5-1 in their Saudi King Cup clash at the Al Majma’ah Sports City Stadium on Saturday.

Bundesliga strugglers Cologne have sacked both sports director Armin Veh and head coach Achim Beierlorzer following their eighth league defeat in 11 games.

2021 AFCON qualifiers face TV blackout (Nation)

Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Lagardere Sports are in a tough battle after the federation scrapped a $1 billion television and marketing rights deal with the organisation in the wake of separate judgments that it breached competition rules.

According to reports, Lagardere Sports officials have been saying that they would fight to enforce the contract.

The French-based company called CAF’S move “unlawful, unreasonable and unjustified” and said it would defend its agreement with the Africa Football ruling body that runs from 2017 to 2028.

It suggested that it may accept changes to the terms of the deal, but that if all else fails it would seek compensation in cash. Read more
