Israeli mask 99.95% protective against Delta strain, European lab says (JPost)

The Israeli mask company Sonovia has released a report from a leading Italian textile-testing laboratory showing that its fabric eliminates the COVID-19 Delta variant particles with over 99.95% effectiveness.

At the announcement of the results, the company’s stock spiked by nearly 30%, company founder Shuki Hershcovich told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday during a meeting at his headquarters in Ramat Gan.

Specifically, the masks were tested by Vismederi Textyle, the same lab that reported earlier that the unique fabric, which is coated in zinc nano-particles, also protects against the British variant of COVID-19 and H1N1, otherwise known as swine flu.

The lab is next expected to test the fabric against the MU strain, which carries several mutations to the spike gene, and is labeled a “variant of interest” by the World Health Organization, said Sonovia Chief Technology Officer Liat Goldhammer-Steinberg. Read more

Mali’s elephants show how people and nature can share space in a complex world (Conversation)

The challenge of conserving wildlife while meeting the many needs of humans is a complex one. Some policymakers don’t see how economies can grow while still making space for wildlife. Others understand that conservation must make space for people, but it’s difficult to do in practice.

The issues involved in the coexistence of humans and wildlife are interconnected and can’t be broken down into small, predictable, manageable parts.

Recognising the uncertainty that arises from multiple relationships could help to make conservation more effective.

An example is provided by the “desert-adapted” elephants of Mali. These 250 to 300 animals are among the last of an elephant population that once stretched across the Sahel. They’re now reduced to tiny refuges due to the intrusion of human activities. Read more

Food myths busted: dairy, salt and steak may be good for you after all (Guardian)

A new Swedish study says decades of official dairy wisdom is wrong.

Over the past 70 years the public health establishment in Anglophone countries has issued a number of diet rules, their common thread being that the natural ingredients populations all around the world have eaten for millennia – meat, dairy, eggs and more – and certain components of these foods, notably saturated fat, are dangerous for human health.

The consequences of these diet ordinances are all around us: 60% of Britons are now overweight or obese, and the country’s metabolic health has never been worse.

Government-led lack of trust in the healthfulness of whole foods in their natural forms encouraged us to buy foods that have been physically and chemically modified, such as salt-reduced cheese and skimmed milk, supposedly to make them healthier for us.

No wonder that more than 50% of the food we eat in the UK is now ultra-processed. Read more

“What Really Happened in Wuhan”:  Author calls for Fauci resignation over lab leak Covid origin theory (inews)

An award-winning Australian journalist has called for the resignation of America’s top infectious diseases expert after her explosive new book uncovered links between the US government and the Wuhan lab that she believes is where the Covid-19 pandemic began.

Sharri Markson told i that evidence from painstaking research and interviews with insiders in China and Washington have added weight to the “lab leak” origin theory. It purports that a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in China in late 2019 triggered the pandemic, causing the deaths of more than 4.7 million people worldwide.

The hypothesis is being investigated by scientists exploring the pandemic’s origins, after it was initially dismissed early on as a conspiracy.
