Five siblings die in fire incident in Lagos (Guardian)
Police in Lagos State said on Sunday that five children of the same family were burnt to death at Abagbo Village, Takwa-Bay area of the state. The spokesman for the command, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the incident in a statement, saying that police had begun to investigate the cause of the fire incident. Tarkwa Bay is one of the small islands located along the Atlantic coast. It is an artificial island created during the construction of the Lagos Harbour. Read more
Ganduje forbids Kano district heads from attending Emir Sanusi’s Eid Durbar (Punch)
Governor of Kano, Abdullahi Ganduje, has directed district heads in the state to only attend the Eid Durbars held in their respective domains and supervised by their respective First Class Emirs. The order was contained in a statement signed by Ganduje’s Chief Press Secretary, Abba Anwar. Lagos AAC disowns Nzenwa, pledges allegiance to Sowore (Guardian)
The Lagos State Chapter of the African Alliance Congress (AAC) said on Sunday that it would not recognise Mr Leonard Nzenwa as the national chairman of the party. The Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Mr Elias Ozikpu, expressed the position in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. He was reacting to the reported sacking of Mr. Omoyele Sowore as National Chairman by a convention of the party on Aug. 9 in Owerri and the subsequent naming of Nzenwa as the new chairman. Read more

Babagana Zulum of Borno has shelved activities lined up for the Eid-el Kabir celebrations to visit Gubio, headquarters of Gubio Local Government Area (LGA) of the state over Saturday’s botched Boko Haram attack. Malam Isa Gusau, the Special Adviser to Zulum on Public Relations and Strategy, made the disclosure in a statement in Maiduguri on Sunday. The Lagos State Police Command says it has commenced investigations into the case of a woman who died in a hotel room in Morogbo, Badagry. She was said to have lodged in the hotel at the time of the incident. Another 81 migrants rescued by charity ship off Libya (Guardian)
French charities SOS Mediterranean and MSF rescued another 81 migrants off the coast of Libya on Sunday, who joined 130 others aboard the ship the Ocean Viking, an AFP reporter said. The young men, mostly Sudanese, who had left Libya late Saturday in a blue rubber dinghy, clapped and cheered as the ship came into view. Sunday’s rescue was the third in as many days. Read more

Hong Kong police have once again clashed with anti-government protesters as the city enters its 10th week of mass demonstrations and unrest. Police fired tear gas across the city on Sunday night, including into an enclosed railway station. In the Wan Chai district, petrol bombs and bricks were thrown at riot police who responded by charging at protesters with batons. Typhoon Lekima: Toll rises as typhoon moves up China coast (BBC)
The death toll from Typhoon Lekima in China has risen to 32 with another 16 people missing, local authorities say. Officials say about five million people in Zhejiang province have been affected, with over one million evacuated to safe spaces. A black bear broke into a house in the US before escaping by smashing through a wall “like the Kool-Aid Man”. Police in Colorado said the break-in happened on Friday evening when the house was vacant. Nobody was injured. The smell of rubbish probably attracted the bear, Estes Park police said. “Upon officer’s arrival, said bear forcibly breached a hole in the wall like the ‘Kool-Aid Man’ and made its escape,” the police department wrote on Facebook.
