Five suspected traffic robbers nabbed in Lagos (Punch)

Five suspects have been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly dispossessing unsuspecting members of the public of their valuables at the Ketu end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Tuesday that the suspects took advantage of the gridlock on the expressway to perpetrate the crime, adding that policemen attached to the Ketu Division arrested them.

He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, charged policemen in the command to be prepared to provide adequate security for all and sundry despite the ongoing protests across the state. Read more

Lagos implores secondary school students to go into agriculture (Guardian)

Lagos State government, yesterday, urged secondary school students in the state to grow into a more productive agricultural labour force as adults.

The state’s Acting Commissioner for Agriculture, Abisola Olusanya, stated this at the School Quiz Competition organised by her ministry as part of activities marking the 2020 World Food Day celebration in Lagos State.

She said that the call became imperative to solve the problem of unemployment, vacuum created by the ageing farmers as well as mitigate the possible effects of global food crisis. Read more

Youths turn protest to carnival in Osun, Lagos (Nation)

The #EndSARS protest turned into carnivals of a sort in Osun and Lagos states on Tuesday.

Music and food were in full flow as the youths sang and danced.

At Ola-Iya junction in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, protesters set up a canopy, under which was a sound system.

The protesters organised a dance competition among themselves; some played football at the junction. Read more

Foundation provides 1,500 bottles of water to #EndSARS protesters (Guardian)

Members of Olori Cares Foundation, yesterday, gave 1,500 bottles of packaged water to protesters at Alausa, Lagos State, in support of the #EndSARS protest.

Project leader of the foundation, Ikpeamaeze Anthony Chizurum, said the passion of the group is to help both young and old people as a means of fostering hope for the future.

According to him, Nigeria is currently filled with uncertainties. “We saw the need to reach out to youths this season. Rather than complain and play the blame game, we decided to take action and do what we can to help make this nation great.” Read more

Soldiers confront protesters as more states join #EndSARS campaign (Punch)

The call for an end to police brutality and reform of the force gained more support across the country on Tuesday, as more states joined in the #EndSARS protest.

The protest, which was largely peaceful, held in many parts of the country with some confrontation with security agencies.

In Abuja, soldiers prevented the protesters from gaining access to the National Assembly.

Senators open debate on 2021 Budget (Nation)

Debate began on Tuesday on the N13.08 trillion 2021 Appropriation Bill presented to the joint session of the National Assembly for consideration five days ago by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Some of the lawmakers gave kudos to the government for the budget. Others expressed displeasure with the N3.85 trillion capital vote; the N5.19 trillion deficit and the plan by the government to service the shortfall partly with external borrowings.

Those who expressed worry over capital estimate called for a reduction of spending on personnel. Read more

Suspect fakes own death certificate to evade prosecution (Punch)

One Ajari Oghenekewe accused by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of presenting a fake death certificate to evade investigation, on Tuesday appeared before a Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State.

The defendant was arraigned on three counts bordering on attempt to defraud and presentation of fake death certificate to EFCC while being investigated.

The prosecutor, Usman Muritala, while addressing the court, explained that the defendant through one Felix Iyekute presented fake death certificate to the EFCC, Ibadan Zonal Office, while undergoing investigation. Read more

Court sentences man to life imprisonment for raping four-year-old girl (Guardian)

A 27-year-old panel beater has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a four-year-old-girl in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Justice Samuel Bola of the Ondo State High Court convicted the defendant after he was found guilty on a court charge of rape.

It was gathered that the victim was sent on an errand by her aunt to get groundnuts from the wife of the defendant, Modupe Oni, on June 14, 2017, but Oni’s wife was not at home when the young girl got there. Oni subsequently dragged her into his room and raped the girl. Read more

Vatican: Italian woman arrested in fraud scandal (BBC)

Police in Milan say they have arrested a 39-year-old Italian woman, who has worked for Cardinal Angelo Becciu, a senior Vatican official who was demoted last month over embezzlement claims.

Cecilia Marogna says she was paid €500,000 ($587,000; £454,000) by Cardinal Becciu.

Ms Marogna was arrested after an Interpol warrant was issued at the Holy See’s request, according to reports.

Both Ms Marogna and Cardinal Becciu have denied any wrongdoing. Read more

China’s top diplomat has urged neighboring states to guard against Washington’s geopolitical ambitions in Asia and called for regional cooperation to thwart foreign provocations in the South China Sea.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said during a joint news conference with his Malaysian counterpart that members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) should work together to ensure security in the region.

The top diplomat argued that the “South China Sea should not be a ground for major power wrestling teeming with warships,” adding that “China and ASEAN have full capacity and wisdom, as well as responsibility, to maintain peace and tranquility.” Read more

COVID-19 induces deep global recession for 2020, says IMF (VOA)

The International Monetary Fund is projecting a deep global recession in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, with global economies expected to shrink by 4.4%. 

Speaking Tuesday at the IMF’s World Economic Outlook Forum in Boston, IMF chief economist Gita Gopinath said the pandemic shut down business and industry throughout the world. 

While most economies reopened, prompting the IMF to improve its current forecast to somewhat over its June prediction, Gopinath said resurgences of the virus and other political uncertainties suggest the global economic recovery will be slow and uneven well into 2021. Read more

Philippines: Anger over death of baby separated from jailed mother (BBC)

The death of a three-month-old baby separated from her jailed mother despite pleas to keep the pair together has shocked the Philippines, reports the BBC’s Preeti Jha.

Reina Mae Nasino, a human rights worker, didn’t know she was pregnant when she was arrested last year in Manila. She put her missed period down to the stress of a night-time police raid in which she was arrested, alongside two fellow activists.

It was only during a medical examination in prison that the 23-year-old found out she was in her first trimester. Read more

Eddie Murphy’s “Coming To America” sequel ‘moves to Amazon Studios in $125m deal’ (Metro)

“Coming 2 America” has reportedly been sold to Amazon Studios in a deal worth $125million ahead of its expected release in December. 

The long-awaited sequel to Eddie Murphy’s 1988 comedy, Coming To America, has reportedly been sold by its distributor, Paramount Pictures, in the big-money deal, according to Variety’s sources. 

The final details of the deal are still being hashed out, including two marketing deals which are expected to transger over with the film and Eddie, who stars in and produced the movie, has to also give his approval. Read more

Ikea will soon be selling pre-used versions of some of its best sellers

Ikea, the world’s biggest furniture business, is planning a second-hand furniture venture.

The Swedish giant will next month launch a scheme to buy back your unwanted Billy bookcases, and certain other of its furniture items you no longer need or want.

Under the plan, it will offer vouchers worth up to 50% of the original price, to be spent at its stores.

The “Buy Back” initiative will launch to coincide with Black Friday. Read more

Protesters mourn slain footballers as #EndSARS protests continue (Punch)

As #EndSARS protests continue across the country, protesters on social media mourned Nigerian footballers who were killed by law enforcement agents.

Tiamiyu Kazeem, assistant captain of Nigeria National League side, Remo Stars, was killed by a hit-and-run vehicle after operatives of SARS allegedly pushed him out from a moving vehicle in Sagamu, Ogun State in February.

Joseph Izu, the late Shooting Stars player, was also reportedly murdered in cold blood by soldiers from the Joint Military Task Force in Okaki, Ahoada, Rivers State October 2016.

Those who commented on social media noted that the late footballers and many other Nigerians would have been alive to live their dreams, but for the security agents, and called for an end to police brutality. Read more

Fatal mistake: Ugandan football player ‘killed by teammates after defensive error’ (RT)

A football game in Uganda ended in tragedy after Churchill Owaci was reportedly beaten to death by his own teammates for committing a defensive error which led to his squad conceding a goal.

The fatal accident is said to have taken place on Saturday in the Lamwo District when the 22-year-old was beaten by his teammates after making a defensive blunder.

Several infuriated players reportedly punched and kicked Owaci before they were finally separated.

The altercation escalated after the game when Owaci decided to take revenge on one of his assaulters, pushing him off a bicycle. Read more

Dustin Johnson: World number one withdraws from CJ Cup after testing positive for Covid-19 (BBC)

World number one Dustin Johnson has tested positive for coronavirus, the PGA Tour has announced.

Johnson, 36, who is now self-isolating, has withdrawn from the CJ Cup, which starts on 15 October at Shadow Creek.
