England hammer Norway 8-0 to reach Euro 2022 quarter-finals (DublinLive)

England secured their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2022 in stunning fashion as they hammered Norway 8-0 at the Amex Stadium to record the biggest win in the competition’s history. The tournament hosts scored six times in a rampant first-half display, with Georgia Stanway’s 12th-minute penalty and a finish from Lauren Hemp three minutes later being followed by a brace apiece from Ellen White and Beth Mead.

That equalled the most amount of goals scored by one team in a Euros match, and England went on to set a new record for the most emphatic victory at a finals, surpassing their 6-0 win over Scotland in 2017, following an effort from substitute Alessia Russo and Mead completing her hat-trick. With the remarkable win seeing them seal top spot in Group A, the Lionesses will be returning to Brighton a week on Wednesday to play the runners-up in Group B – which features Germany and Spain – in the last eight.

The demolition job was watched by a crowd of 28,847, from which cries of “football’s coming home” rang out at various stages as England’s unbeaten run under boss Sarina Wiegman extended to a 16th match with a 14th victory. Their group fixtures conclude with Friday’s meeting at St Mary’s with now-eliminated Northern Ireland, who had lost 2-0 to Austria earlier on Monday.

England had opened their campaign with last week’s 1-0 win over Austria at Old Trafford, and Wiegman opted to name a line-up unchanged from the one that had started in Manchester. After an uneventful opening 10 minutes, the game burst into life when White went down in the box under the attentions of Maria Thorisdottir, and German referee Riem Hussein pointed to the spot, with Stanway subsequently stepping up and firing the spot-kick past Guro Pettersen with aplomb. Matt Fitzpatrick claims omen from teenage years can bring him Open Championship glory (Mirror)

Matt Fitzpatrick has predicted a birdie blitz at the Open Championship, and revealed that an omen from his teenage years means that he could win it.

The Sheffield star walked the Old Course on Monday and his caddie Billy Foster reeled off his historical knowledge of final scores that have clinched the Claret Jug.

Zach Johnson was victorious on 15 under par in 2015. Louis Oosthuize n at 16 under in 2010, and Tiger Woods 19 under in 2000 and 14 under par in 2005. Fitzpatrick inspected the baked course, admitted up to six par fours can be reached from the tee, and predicted a “really low” scoring shoot-out.

The 28C sunshine and flat calm weather could turn into a putting contest unless the wind gets up later this week. He said: “Someone asked Billy today, what does he think the winning score will be. I’m pretty oblivious with most golf history, and he was saying, Louis won on minus 15. Someone on minus 19, minus 16. Read more

Roger Federer unranked for first time in professional career (SI)

Roger Federer dropped out of the ATP rankings entirely for the first time in a quarter-century on Monday, while Novak Djokovic slid four spots to No. 7 a day after winning Wimbledon for the seventh time.

Federer had appeared in the singles rankings every week since he made his debut at age 16 in September 1997, tied for 803rd, and held the record for most time at No. 1 until Djokovic broke it.

Federer was 97th before play began at the All England Club but now has zero points because the rankings are based on a player’s results over the previous 52 weeks — and he has not competed at all since reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinals a year ago.

Shortly after that loss, Federer had his third operation on his right knee in a span of about 18 months. Federer, who turns 41 on Aug. 8, intends to make his return to tournament play in his native Switzerland in October and said during an appearance at Centre Court last weekend that he hopes he can play at Wimbledon next year.
