Flooding: Lagos residents seek FG’s intervention over rail line construction (Punch)

Residents of Akinde Street, off Balogun Road, Ishaga, Lagos State, are apprehensive that their property will be affected by severe flooding during the upcoming rainy season following the rehabilitation of the existing railway line that connects Lagos State with other states of the federation amid the construction of a new one.

According to the residents, they encountered severe flooding during the last rainy season, with many abandoning their homes to take shelter elsewhere.

They said the floodwaters last year destroyed fences, household effects, vehicle electrical systems and vehicle engines.

A member of the Akinde Street Community Development Association, Mr. Ahmed Folorunsho, told Punch Metro that the water, which gathered at Akinde, was from Ishaga, Gudugba, Crossing and Fagba areas.

He stated that the large volume of water that gathered in Akinde could not be channelled through a narrow canal, as the raging torrents burst out of the canal, flooded the streets and people’s homes. Read more
